Artist Talk to Feature Renowned American Indian Artists on St. Croix Today
UVI's The Caribbean Writer, in collaboration with the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, will feature a presentation by renowned American Indian Artists Edgar Heap of Birds and Shanna Ketchum Heap of Birds at The Caribbean Writer's second annual Artist Talk scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 10. The artist will speak and show slides of their art works in Room 133 of the Research and Extension Center on UVI's St. Croix campus.
The Caribbean Writer promises an engaging evening, one that will explore ways to approach collaborative art projects, and provide techniques to re-look and re-interpret the works of artists. The program should prove informative for local artists and would-be artists, art teachers, high school students and anyone interested in public art and American Indian cosmology.
St. Thomas Campus E-Waste Drive Planned by CEA's Office
The Campus Executive Administrator's (CEA) Office is partnering with the V.I. Waste Management Authority to conduct an E-waste drive on UVI's St. Thomas campus during the week beginning March 21.
In order to determine the size trailer required, the office needs an assessment of the e-waste accumulations on hand. Departments are asked to identify any e-waste items in their areas and notify the CEA's Office of the quantities you have on hand no later than Friday, March 11. In preparation for the e-waste effort, each unit is asked to prepare a detailed inventory of all e-waste items. When an overview of e-waste quantities is complete, announcements will be made for the scheduled pick up of e-waste from each college/school/unit on campus. Everyone is asked to participate in this environmentally green initiative. Important instructions will be disseminated soon.
UVI Board of Trustees to Meet March 12 on St. Croix
The UVI Board of Trustees will meet at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, in the Great Hall, North West Wing, on the UVI St. Croix campus. The meeting will convene with regular session agenda items and reports from UVI President David Hall and Board of Trustees Chairman Alexander A. Moorhead. The Board will receive an update report from the Research and Technology Park Board. Then the Board of Trustees will consider agenda items that require action. Public Invited to UVI's Spring 2011 Research Symposium on St. Croix on March 12
The Virgin Islands public is invited to the University of the Virgin Islands' Ninth Annual Spring Research Symposium, set for 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 12. The symposium will take place in the Cafetorium on the University's St. Croix campus. The event is organized by the Emerging Caribbean Scientists Programs office in UVI's College of Science and Mathematics. Admission is free.

The Virgin Islands community is invited to "Join UVI in Going Green" at the 2011 Afternoon on the Green event slated for Sunday, March 13, on the Herman E. Seminar on Sandy Point NWR Mongoose Population Set March 15 at UVI
Dr. Buzz Hoagland of the biology department at Westfield (Ma.) State University will present a seminar on the control of the mongoose population at the Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) on St. Croix from 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15. Jazz Legend Hugh Masekela to Present Lecture at UVI on March 17
South Africa's legendary jazz trumpeter Hugh Masekela will present a free lecture - discussing his work as an activist and how his music helped to raise international awareness of apartheid - at the University of the Virgin Islands on Thursday, March 17. The presentation will be made from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Great Hall of the North West Wing building on the St. Croix campus. It will also be available, via videoconference, in the first-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus. A brief question and answer session will follow. UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts is bringing Masekela and Afro-pop vocalist Lira to the Virgin Islands to perform shows on St. Thomas and St. Croix on March 18 and 19. (See related item below.) VIUCEDD Plans Annual Open House for March 31 on St. Thomas
The Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) will conduct its annual open house from 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 31, in the first-floor conference room of the UVI Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus.
An informative program is planned, featuring opening remarks by VIUCEDD Executive Director Dr. Yegin Habtes and an overview of programs and services for persons with disabilities in the Virgin Islands. The center opened in 1994. The open house will also include a financial planning workshop and demonstrations of newly developed devices that can be employed as assistive technology by persons with disabilities. Many of these devices can also benefit individuals without disabilities.

CES and Frederick Lutheran to Host St. Thomas Community Health Fair on March 12
A free, community health fair will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon in Emancipation Garden on St. Thomas. The event is sponsored by the Frederick Lutheran Church and the UVI Cooperative Extension Service.
During the fair, UVI student nurses will offer health screenings, including blood pressure and glucose tests. Members of the church will offer spiritual counseling. UVI's Cooperative Extension Service will present a healthy homes demonstration, nutrition information and a course on how to construct a box garden. A variety of informational and support activities will be provided by other participants, including the Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD), the Rotary Club of St. Thomas, the American Cancer Association, the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program, the V.I. UVI's AES to Host 13th International Aquaponics and Tilapia Aquaculture Course
The UVI Agricultural Experiment Station's Aquaculture Program will host the 13th annual International Aquaponics and Tilapia Aquaculture Course from March 14 through March 18 on the St. Croix campus.
Nearly 60 participants from the Caribbean, the U.S. and the Americas, Africa, Asia and Europe will attend. Individuals will study the principles and practical application of the Aquaponic and Biofloc Tilapia Production Systems developed at UVI. UVI is recognized around the world as the academic leader in the study of aquaponics. Under the direction of Dr. James Rakocy, the program developed and refined a commercial production system that recycles and reuses water resources and recovers waste nutrients in vegetable by-products. Dr. Rakocy retired last December, but has returned to St Croix to teach the course one more time.
Members of the UVI community are encouraged to welcome Dr. Rakocy and aquaponics course participants to the campus.
10th UVI Charter Day-Queen Mary Highway 5K Walk/Run Slated for March 18
The University of the Virgin Islands' St. Croix campus will host the 10th Annual UVI Charter Day-Queen Mary Highway 5K Walk/Run on Friday, March 18. The popular activity is coordinated by the V.I. Pace Runners. The event, which takes runners and walkers from Sunshine Mall in Fredericksted to the UVI campus, has a 6 a.m. start time. For those who wish to park at UVI, transportation to the race start will be provided at 5 a.m. The registration fee is $10 for UVI students and children, and $15 for adults. Student Employee Appreciation Nominations Sought on St. Thomas & St. Croix

The awards for the student employee of the year are designed to show the University's appreciation for the invaluable services provided by student workers. SGA Urges Online Votes in The Home Depot 'Retool Your School' Promotion

The program is designed to provide campus improvements to Historically Black Colleges and Universities that receive the most online votes for their school. The Student Government Association on UVI's St. Croix campus will host its fifth annual SOS (Shadow Our Students) Program on Tuesday, March 29. UVI Accepting Applications for 'Math Behind the Science' Free Summer Program
UVI is accepting applications for its 2011 "Math Behind the Science" summer bridge program. The free program (previously called Summer Bridge2Calculus) is designed to enhance the mathematics preparedness of college-bound students who are interested in pursuing careers in science, mathematics, engineering, technology or medicine.
Math Behind the Science will prepare students to enter UVI's introductory calculus course and provide a foundation for success in that important course. Field trips, guest speakers and workshops are integrated into the five-week summer program. Sessions begin on June 20, and end with an awards ceremony on July 29. Recent high school graduates and current Math Skills students are eligible to participate in this program.

AES Offering Student Internship at University of Guam
UVI's Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) on the St. Croix campus has funds available to send one UVI student to the University of Guam for a four-week internship beginning on May 31. The internship will emphasize agriculture in a tropical island setting. UVI is seeking a student who is interested in pursuing a career agriculture, food science or environmental sciences. The opportunity is open to all UVI students. Funding is from a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant awarded through the CariPac Consortium.
The program offers an opportunity for a student to expand his/her awareness and appreciation of island life and cultures. Students from the other schools in the CariPac Consortium will participate. CariPac Consortium schools include: University of the Virgin Islands, University of Puerto Rico, University of Guam, Northern Marianas College, Palau Community College, American Samoa Community College, College of the Marshall Islands and College of Micronesia - FSM.

BWC Planning Pre-Finals Academic Jams on St. Thomas, St. Croix
UVI's Brothers With A Cause organization will sponsor week-long academic jams on the University's St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses from April 22 through 27. The jams are designed to create an atmosphere that allows students to sharpen their understanding of course materials in preparation for final exams through peer tutoring, group study and counseling. On-campus sessions are planned daily, stretching from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m.
On St. Thomas sessions will be available daily - from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. - in the Campus Advising & Tutorial Services (CATS) office. Group study and tutorials will be offered daily in the Dining Pavilion from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Access will also be available 24/7 in the Library Room 120 Computer Lab. On April 26 and 27 special sessions will be available in the VIP Room of the Sports and Fitness Center from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Counseling for individuals experiencing test anxiety will be available by appointment. NIH Meeting on Aging Research Planned for St. Thomas and St. Croix in April
The U.S. Virgin Islands will host a National Institutes of Health (NIH) regional meeting on aging research in April. The meeting is designed to provide information on existing opportunities for research and training, provide hands-on technical assistance in grant writing, solicit advice on the design of new research opportunities, and gain strategies for recruiting underrepresented students and investigators to aging research.
The National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) Director's Regional Meeting will be held on April 7 and 8, on UVI's St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses concurrently, via video-conference. Individuals who should attend this meeting include health science professionals and students within health science research institutions with an interest in beginning or strengthening their aging research expertise and/or portfolio.
The featured speakers will be NIA Director Dr. Richard J. Hodes, NIMHD Director Dr. John Ruffin, Dr. James S. Jackson, a professor at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, and Dr. Gloria B. Callwood, director of the Caribbean Exploratory Research Center at the University of the Virgin Islands.

IRP Conducting National Survey of Student Engagement at UVI
UVI's Office of Institutional Research & Planning (IRP) has announced it will administer the 2011 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) at UVI in collaboration with the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research from Feb. 8 through March 23, 2011.
The survey is designed to collect feedback from UVI freshman and senior students on both campuses. It will focus on the quality of student interactions with faculty and peers, how students spend their time, and what they gain educationally from classes and other activities. The results will help the University to assess the quality of its undergraduate programs and show where improvement is needed. Students selected for the survey will receive customized letters of invitation and survey packages from the Provost. Those who respond to the survey by April 28, 2011, will be entered into a gift drawing.

Latecomers will not be allowed to take the test. The cost associated with CLEP tests is $77 per test; make check or money order payable to CLEP. An additional administrative fee of $15 is payable to UVI prior to the test date. A separate check and/or money order must be written for each test. Cash will not be accepted. Students are advised that the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test dates for the Spring 2011 semester have been finalized on the St. Thomas campus. CLEP tests will be administered on March 8, March 24 and April 11, in the CATS computer lab (CA Building Room 123). Students can register for the test at the Office of Access and Enrollment Services' front desk, located on the first floor of the Administration and Conference Center.
Test candidates must report to the test site no later than 9:30 a.m. on test days with appropriate identification and form of payment. Acceptable forms of identification include a current driver's license, state or federal ID, a current passport, tribal ID card, naturalization card or certificate of citizenship. The cost associated with CLEP is $77 (payable to College Board) per test and an additional administrative fee of $15 (payable to UVI prior to the test date). English Proficiency Exam Slated for April 7 at UVI
UVI's Spring semester English Proficiency Exam (EPE) for the University is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on April 7, 2011.
On St. Thomas, the test will be administered in Rooms 223, 224 and 225 of UVI's Sports and Fitness Center. Students should be prepared to present an I.D. in order to be admitted. Students must register for the EPE in the Access and Enrollment Office located in the Administration and Conference Center building. On St. Croix, the exam will be administered in Rooms 302, 303, 305, and 308 of the Evans Center. Students are required to register at the Enrollment and Access Office in Room 807. Two EPE workshops are scheduled on the St. Croix campus, from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, March 18, and from 4 to 6 p.m., on Friday, April 1. The workshop venue is Evans Center Room 716. The University of the Virgin Islands will administer the Masters in Public Administration (MPA) Comprehensive Exam on Friday, April 8, 2011. The exam will be offered on both campuses. UVICELL Offers Free Grant Writing Seminar
The University of the Virgin Islands' Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center will offer a free seminar for anyone who has an interest in learning how to get grant funding. The seminar is titled Effective Proposal Development Process. It will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, at the UVICELL Center on St. Thomas.
The two-hour seminar will provide a brief overview on developing successful grant proposals and will serve as a precursor to the upcoming Grants and Proposal Writing Skills course which will also be offered in March. Participants will receive information on the entire grant writing process from laying the groundwork to reporting requirements.

Workshops for Human Resources Professionals Slated for March 16
The UVI Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center and the American Management Association (AMA) will offer workshops titled Fundamentals of Human Resource Management from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16. On St. Croix, the session will be held at the Joseph A. Simpson Building, #23A Hospital Street in Frederiksted. On St. Thomas, the workshop will be held at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas Campus.
The workshop is part of a series being offered by the UVICELL in conjunction with the AMA. Participants will learn the essentials of key Human Resources functions such as implementing a results-based performance management system, writing job descriptions and specifications, developing cost-effective, competitive compensation and benefits programs, recruiting, selecting, and interviewing and hiring employees in compliance with federal and state laws.

Intermediate Bookkeeping Course Offered by UVICELL
UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center will offer a course for individuals interested learning bookkeeping in order to function as an entry-level bookkeeper or manage their own books.
On St. Thomas, Intermediate Bookkeeping will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning March 29. On St. Croix, the course will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays starting March 30. All sessions will be held at the UVICELL Center on St. Thomas and the UVICELL Center in Frederiksted, St. Croix.
Participants will to prepare basic financial statements, journalize and post accrual, reconcile a bank statement, prepare payroll and much more.

Business Tax Return Seminar Set March 16 on St. John
The VI Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in collaboration with the VI Bureau of Internal Revenue will conduct a free seminar entitled "Filing Your 2010 Business Tax Return" from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16, at the Julius Sprauve School Cafeteria in Cruz Bay, on St. John. The presenter is Senior Revenue Agent Clifford Charleswell. Topics to be covered will include: tax changes for 2010, how to compute taxes, how to file business taxes accurately and how tax returns are selected for audit.
