Future Global Leaders Institute Continues Through June 1 at UVI; World Forum Set May 30

UVI's 17th Annual Summer Institute for Future Global Leaders in the Caribbean continues through June 1, on the St. Thomas campus. Approximately 35 junior, senior and graduate college students from the Virgin Islands, the U.S. mainland and throughout the Caribbean are expected to participate in the intensive, two-week leadership development course that aims to broaden student knowledge of the impact global forces of technology, commerce, and communication have on the Caribbean. Students are attending a variety of lectures, workshops and other learning experiences to nurture their aspirations for global leadership.

An annual highlight of the institute is the World Forum Debate, scheduled this year for 9 a.m. on Monday, May 30, in the first-floor conference room of Administration and Conference Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus. The forum is open to the public. A news release is available from the UVI home page - www.uvi.edu - and from this direct link.

Volunteers Needed for Part Two of UVI's 2011 Alumni Phonathon Initiative

Volunteers are needed for part two of UVI's 2011 Alumni Phonathon which is scheduled for May 23 to 26, in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. Volunteers from the UVI community - students, alumni, faculty and staff - are needed to make calls, process paperwork and to help organize call sheets. Calling takes place each night from 5:30 to 9 p.m.

The annual Alumni Phonathon has become one of the University's primary vehicles for communicating with its alumni body. This year, part one of this initiative was launched with a calling campaign during UVI's charter month. Part two of the effort will focus on special alumni - persons who attended UVI or CVI (the College of the Virgin Islands) for a minimum of 12 months, but did not graduate. It is also part of an over-arching effort to reconnect with individuals who attended this institution before it offered a four-year degree.

Special alumni, like graduates, have unique interests, ties and experiences with UVI. During the phonathon, volunteers will call special alumni, update contact and career information, share current news about UVI and the upcoming 50th anniversary celebration, and invite them to support the University and its students. Funds raised through the phonathon support student scholarships, UVI's areas of greatest need, the Foundation for the University of the Virgin Islands, the Reichhold Center for the Arts, and UVI's research and academic divisions.

Gifts for Volunteers

Volunteers will each receive special thank you gifts and dinner will be provided. A variety of prizes - BVI trip, a hotel stay, Plaza Extra coupons and gift certificates from Essentric Shoe Boutique, Clover's Shoe Boutique, the UVI Bookstore and the UVI Wellness Center - will be awarded to the top callers each night and to the overall top callers for the four days of the phonathon.

The 2011 Alumni Phonathon is sponsored by the UVI's Offices of Development and Alumni Affairs. To volunteer, contact Liza Margolis at (340) 693-1053 or send e-mail to lmargol@uvi.edu.
