UVI Libraries Announce Intersession Hours
UVI Libraries will observe intersession hours from Wednesday, May 4, through Sunday, May 15, 2011. Both UVI Libraries and the St. John Academic Center will be closed on Carnival Friday, May 6. Regular hours will resume at 8 a.m. on Monday, May 16. Intersession hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Closed: Saturdays and Sundays.

VIUCEDD Sets Forum on Mental Illness in the Virgin Islands for May 12
May is Mental Health Month and Clear Blue Sky, Inc., in collaboration with the UVI's Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD), will present a Forum on Mental Illness in the Virgin Islands from 8 a.m. to noon on Thursday, May 12, in the Administration and Conference Center on the University's St. Thomas campus.
The forum is designed to encourage awareness and understanding by the public of mental health issues and the services that are available to help people with a mental illness get well, stay well and progress beyond the confines of mental illness. The forum will also feature a panel of service providers who work with individuals along the continuum of a mental illness.
The forum's special guest speaker will be Evan Gerrard, a training coordinator with Genesis Club in Worcester, Mass., and the International Center for Clubhouse Development (ICCD). The ICCD is a global resource for communities creating solutions for people with mental illness. It helps communities around the world create ICCD Clubhouses, which are community centers that give people with mental illness hope and opportunities to reach their full potential.

Financial Aid Office Releases Summer 2011 Financial Aid Update
UVI's Office of Financial Aid has announced the release of the Summer 2011 Financial Aid eligibility criteria and documentation. With the passage of the FY 2011 spending bill by Congress, the second scheduled Pell Grant award will remain in effect for the Summer 2011 term, only. The second scheduled Pell Grant will be eliminated for Summer 2012.

UVI Ad Club President Wins Best of Show in 2011 USVI ADDY Awards
Recaldo Richardson, president of the UVI Ad Club, received the Student Addy Award for Best of Show at the 2011 ADDY Awards, presented by the American Advertising Federation (AAF) of the U.S. Virgin Islands, on Saturday, April 30. Richardson won for his student project advertising campaign titled "I Am Drama: School of Theatrical Arts." UVI Ad Club members celebrated on stage with Richardson while receiving a standing ovation from the audience. UVI Ad Club members assisted the AAF USVI to organize the 2011 event, serving as red carpet photographers, award delivery ushers and at the registration and payment table. Appreciation Dinner, Ball for 2011 Graduates on St. Croix Slated for May 7
An appreciation dinner and ball for the 2011 graduating class at UVI Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, at the Great Hall of the North West Wing. The ball is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. The evening is designed to give special recognition to the parents, spouses, family, friends, faculty and staff who have aided the upcoming graduates on their academic journey. Attire for the event is formal. Admission is $25 for graduates, $30 for general admission, and $10 for persons age 10 and under. The deadline to purchase tickets is May 5. Aspen Santa Fe Ballet to Perform May 21 at the Reichhold Center
The widely acclaimed Aspen Santa Fe Ballet will bring exhilarating dance to UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 21. The company's presentation is described as contemporary ballet with a European twist. The Aspen Santa Fe Ballet features 12 dancers and is led by directors Tom Mossbrucker and Jean-Philippe Malaty. It performs year-round home seasons in both Aspen and Santa Fe, and has made landmark appearances at the famed Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, the Kennedy Center, New York City Center's Fall for Dance Festival, the American Dance Festival, Wolftrap, and the Joyce Theater in New York City, as well as performing in virtually every corner of the United States.

Scholarships Available for Advanced Degrees, Cultural Projects
The board of directors of the Virgin Islands Academic & Cultural Awards Endowment Scholarship is accepting applications through May 16, for its scholarship program. Virgin Islands residents pursuing advanced degrees are encouraged to apply. Funding is also available for VI residents conducting research and projects designed to promote cultural awareness in the territory. Recipients may receive up to $10,000 per year.
The scholarship program was created by the Virgin Islands Legislature in 1970 to assist residents with financial support to advance their academic and professional studies. TMCF Seeking Scholarship Applications for 2011-2012 School Year
The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) has opened its scholarship application process to all students seeking financial assistance for the 2011-2012 school year. TMCF scholarship recipients are awarded annually to students meeting the TMCF eligibility criteria for scholarship. Awards are made per semester based on a verification process designed to ensure students are meeting academic expectations and have an unmet financial need. All classifications of students are invited to apply for a TMCF scholarship.

The University of the Virgin Islands is accepting applications from students interested in enrolling in its Master of Arts in Psychology with a concentration in counseling program for the Fall 2011 semester. The MAP program is designed to provide students with the necessary academic knowledge base, problem solving skills and experiential opportunities to allow them to work in a variety of social service and counseling settings. This graduate Psychology program seeks to prepare practitioners to use the science of psychology for the promotion of human well-being, specifically in the provision of psychological services to children, adolescents, and families in the mental health, judicial, and educational systems. It provides some with a stepping stone toward licensure.

UVI Accepting Applications for 'Math Behind the Science' Free Summer Program
UVI is accepting applications for its 2011 "Math Behind the Science" summer bridge program. The free program (previously called Summer Bridge2Calculus) is designed to enhance the mathematics preparedness of college-bound students who are interested in pursuing careers in science, mathematics, engineering, technology or medicine.
Math Behind the Science will prepare students to enter UVI's introductory calculus course and provide a foundation for success in that important course. Field trips, guest speakers and workshops are integrated into the five-week summer program. Sessions begin on June 20, and end with an awards ceremony on July 29. Recent high school graduates and current Math Skills students are eligible to participate in this program.

UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center will offer a course for individuals and small businesses who are interested in learning to use the full-featured small business accounting software QuickBooks beginning May 10. Introduction to QuickBooks sessions will be held 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the CELL Center on UVI's St. Thomas Campus. Participants will learn how to set up a standard list of accounts, manage accounts receivable and payable, reconcile bank accounts, track credit card transactions and much more.

CELL Offers Intermediate Quickbooks Course on St. Croix Beginning May 14
UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center is offering a course for experienced users of the full-featured small business accounting software QuickBooks. Intermediate QuickBooks will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays beginning May 14. Sessions will be held at the UVICELL Center in Frederiksted, St. Croix.
The training is a continuation of the material covered in the Introduction to QuickBooks course. Participants will gain a better understanding of their financial records and how to utilize this information to make managerial decision for their companies.

UVICELL to Begin Grant Writing Series of Seminars on St. Croix on May 14
UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center will offer a series of grant writing seminars for individuals interested in developing successful, fundable grants.
The first course in the series - Grant and Proposal Writing Skills - Module 1 - will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 14 and May 21, 2011. The sessions will be held at the UVICELL Center in Frederiksted, St. Croix.
The course will provide seasoned and beginning grant writers with effective grant-writing strategies to craft successful grant proposals. Participants will learn how to organize the grant writing process, prepare the basic elements of a grant application, locate funding sources and much more.

CELL Plans Workshops on Managing Change in Organizations on May 18
UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center will host one-day workshops on St. Thomas and St. Croix titled "Planning and Managing Change" on Wednesday, May 18. The workshop will center on the importance of proactively managing change in organizations and avoiding knee-jerk reactions that undermine efforts to deal change. The workshops will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at both islands. On St. Thomas, it will be held at the CELL Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus. On St. Croix, the workshop will take place at the Joseph A. Simpson Building, #23A Hospital Street, in Frederiksted.
The workshop is part of a series offered by UVICELL in conjunction with the American Management Association (AMA). Participants will learn to manage the change process; help others move successfully through the process; diagnose the impact of change; determine key success factors; monitor change implementation and much more. How to Start a Business in the V.I. Seminars Offered by SBDC on St. Thomas
A series of step-by-step seminars on how to start a business in the Virgin Islands is being offered by the Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center on St. Thomas. The one-hour seminar covers business licenses and fees, business structures, insurance, tax considerations and financing. The fee is $10 for individuals who pre-register and $15 at the door.

SBDC Export Training Session to Focus on Upcoming West Indian Festival in Denmark
The Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will conduct a special training for individuals interested in starting or developing export businesses. The training, which is free, is slated for 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, May 9, at the SBDC St. Thomas Service Center at Nisky Center. The session will cover the basics of export, important markets and how to "go global."
There will be a special emphasis on the upcoming Virgin Islands trade mission attending the Caribbean and Danish West Indian Festival scheduled May 30 - June 1, in Aarhus, Denmark. The 2011 festival is expected to up to 300,000 visitors. A tent to house trade mission participants from the Virgin Islands is being arranged. The SBDC also invites participation by individuals with small businesses in the Virgin Islands through the newly developed BIZVI Virtual Mall. The virtual mall offers the chance to showcasing products and services online and a unique opportunity to reach European markets.

Author, Entrepreneur and Columnist Rhonda Abrams to Present SBDC Seminars
The Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will host seminars by author, entrepreneur and nationally syndicated columnist Rhonda Abrams on St. Thomas on May 23 and on St. Croix on May 24.
Abrams, a widely recognized expert on small businesses and entrepreneurship, writes the nation's most widely-distributed column on the subjects, appearing weekly in USA Today and quarterly in the Costco Connection. She has written more than a dozen books on small business, which have been translated into more than 30 languages. Among her best-selling works are "Successful Business Plan: Secrets & Strategies," now in its fifth edition, and "Six-Week Start-Up," "Business Plan In A Day," "What Business Should I Start?" and "Successful Marketing: Secrets & Strategies." Her work has been adopted by more than 600 business schools throughout the U.S. - including UCLA, MIT, University of Arizona, Cornell, University of California, Berkeley and USC.
Abrams has started three successful companies and is currently president and chief entrepreneur of The Planning Shop, a publishing endeavor that creates content for small businesses. Her real-life experience along with her broad view of entrepreneurship gives her a unique understanding of the challenges and rewards of being an entrepreneur.

Media Marketing to Represent Territory During National Small Business Week
Jennifer Sibilly and Rita Jones, owners of Media Marketing of St. Thomas, have been named the 2011 Virgin Islands Small Business Persons of the Year on the national level by the U.S. Small Business Administration. They will represent the territory at National Small Business Week events to be held in Washington, D.C., on May 18 through 20. This is the first time that the Virgin Islands will be represented at the national level. The formal placement of the territory's representative at the national level was made possible by the Office of Congresswoman Donna M. Christensen and the Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center.
