UVI Board Sets $2.5 Million Fundraising Goal for FY 2012
The University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees met Oct. 29, 2011, on the Albert A. Sheen campus on St. Croix. Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr., honorary chairman of the Board, attended the meeting.
The full Board set the Fiscal Year 2012 Annual Fund goal for University contributions at $2.5 million. UVI Vice President for Institutional Advancement Dionne Jackson said the previous goal, of $1.5 million, was exceeded in Fiscal Year 2011, with contributions totaling $3.4 million. The Alumni Giving rate, which was 10.42 percent in FY 2010, rose to 13.5 percent in Fiscal Year 2011. The Board of Trustees set the Fiscal Year 2012 Alumni Giving goal at 16 percent.

Calling All Student Models
If you've always wanted to be in pictures, this is your time to shine. The UVI Public Relations Office is planning a November photography shoot and is looking for male and female students who'd like to take part in this volunteer opportunity.
At least 10 UVI students are needed for unpaid modeling assignments on St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix. Audition head shots and photography release forms can be obtained by visiting the UVI Public Relations Office on the St. Thomas campus (ACC Building Room #229) and the Office of Student Affairs (Room 803 of the Melvin Evans Center) on the St. Croix campus weekdays between the hours of noon and 3 p.m.
On St. Thomas and St. Croix, headshots will be taken on Tuesday, Nov. 8 from 9 - 11:30 a.m. and from 3 - 4:30 p.m.

St. Croix Students to Attend Leadership Workshop, Community Service Day
Virgin Islands National Guard Command Sergeant Major Mona L. Barnes will be the keynote speaker at a two-day Student Leadership and Development Training workshop sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs at UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. She will speak at 9 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 4. The workshop, which is expected to involve 30 UVI students, will take place at the Hibiscus Beach Resort in La Grande Princesse. Other presenters at the event will include UVI Trustee Jennifer Nugent-Hill, Gwendolyn Hall-Brady, legislative director for Sen. Usie Richards, and Yvette DeLaubanque, development officer for WTJX Channel 12.
At 1 p.m. on day-two of the workshop - Saturday, Nov. 5 - the UVI students will participate in a community services day at the Canegata Ball Park. The students will sand and paint benches and perform a general cleanup of the park. Work will be done in conjunction with the V.I. Department of Housing Parks and Recreation. St. Thomas/St. John Agriculture and Food Fair Set Nov. 5-6 at UVI on St. Thomas
The St. Thomas/St. John Agriculture and Food Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 5, and Sunday, Nov. 6, at the grounds of UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts on St. Thomas. The theme for this year's fair is "Farm Today for a Healthier Tomorrow." The fair will be dedicated to the memory of UVI Prof. Gene Emanuel, who died in July.
A new feature of the fair this year will be a food drive conducted by the Cooperative Extension Service 4-H Program. The public is invited to bring canned goods and dried food item - such as beans and pastas - to a collection point at the east-most exit gate at the Reichhold Center grounds. Food collected will be presented to the Salvation Army and Catholic Charities.

Planning for Agrifest 2012 Under Way; Final Participation Deadline Set for Nov. 7
UVI's Cooperative Extension Service (CES) has announced that it is time for the University community to begin planning for the 2012 Agriculture & Food Fair of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Agrifest 2012 will be held Feb. 18-20, on the Grounds of the Rudolph Shulterbrandt Agricultural Complex in Estate Lower Love on St. Croix. The theme for the fair will be "Youth in Agriculture - Growing our Future."
For 2012, all UVI exhibits must be integrated and interactive, and reflect the fair theme. No backdrops will be provided or allowed for displays. Units are encouraged to get their creative juices flowing and make sure their exhibits are hands-on and will engage fairgoers. Tabletop displays are acceptable.
The final deadline for all units to file submission of intent to participate is Monday, Nov. 7.

Contributors Sought for 'We Are UVI' Web Project
As part of the University's celebration of its 50th anniversary, the UVI website will offer a special, weekly feature throughout 2012 titled "We Are UVI." In it, memories from individuals who have had a close affiliation with UVI at some point in the last 50 years will be shared. This will offer a wide range of persons a chance to actively join in celebrating this grand event in UVI's history. Remembrances included in "We Are UVI" will consist of no more than 450 words describing a significant event in the contributor's UVI experience. They will also include "then" and "now" photographs of the author. Narratives are now being assembled for "We Are UVI" and persons interested in contributing or helping in any way with this project should contact Dr. Henry H. UVI SGA Queen's Committee Plans Fashion Walk Nov. 5 on St. Thomas
The Queens Committee of the UVI Student Government Association will present a fund-raising Fashion Walk featuring some of St. Thomas's finest models at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5. The show will take place in the conference room of the Administration and Conference Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus. Clothes from Jamal Drummond, Fashion Source, Essentric Shoes Boutique, Casico Design and Cliaunjel Williams will be featured.
Funds raised will go to support activities leading up to the next Miss UVI Ambassadorial Competition which will take place on St. Thomas in the spring of 2012. General admission is $15, with UVI students paying $10. Tickets can be purchased at the UVI Bookstore and at the Student Activity Center. Bucs Soccer to Matchup with Caribbean University on Nov. 5
UVI's men's soccer squad still needs one final win on the road to qualify for LAI post-season play. The squad takes on Caribbean University in a 5 p.m. matchup in Bayamon on Saturday, Nov. 5. This is their last regular-season game. The Bucs dropped a rescheduled game against Sacred Heart University 3 to 1, on Oct. 29. Their season record stands at 2-2-2.

UVI Concert Choir Plans Concert Nov. 11 on St. Thomas Campus
The UVI Concert Choir, under the direction of Dr. Lorna Young-Wright, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, in the Dining Pavilion on the St. Thomas campus. Spyro Gyra to Perform at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts on Nov. 12
The next show on the Reichhold Center's 2012 season will be performed by the phenomenally popular jazz group Spyro Gyra at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12. With over 25 albums released and 10 million copies sold, Spyro Gyra is one of the most commercially successful groups in jazz. Their latest album - A Foreign Affair - features music inspired by their travels, from the Caribbean to South America, and even to South Africa, India and Japan.

St. Thomas Reef Fest 2011 Set for Nov. 13; Participants Sought
Interested groups and organizations are invited to join in the 2011 edition of St. Thomas Reef Fest which is scheduled for noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13, at Brewers Bay Beach. The Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service at UVI, in partnership with the Virgin Islands Network of Environmental Educators (VINE), the Lana Vento Foundation, the Environmental Association of St. Thomas and Sea Grant are sponsoring the event.
Reef Fest's goals are to raise awareness of the value of coral reef, promote environmental stewardship, and strengthen natural resource management and conservation. Activities such as educational games, snorkel clinics, sandcastle building, reef tours and presentations by experts in natural resources, science and management are planned. Environmental exhibits and activity booths will be presented by various government and community organizations, and local "green" vendors of both food and retail are encouraged. Albert A. Sheen Campus Holiday Gala Scheduled Dec. 10
The annual UVI Holiday Gala for the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix is slated for 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, at the Divi Carina Bay Resort. VI-WRRI Issues Call for Project Proposals; Submission Deadline Nov. 30
The Virgin Islands Water Resources Research Institute (VI-WRRI) at the University of the Virgin Islands has issued a Call for Proposals for the 2012 - 2013 U.S. Geological Survey Water Institute Program. Proposals that address water resources issues in the U.S. Virgin Islands are being sought. Funds for this program - approximately $80,000 - are made available through the Section 104 Institute Program of the U.S. Department of Interior - U.S. Geological Survey. All faculty and staff of the University of the Virgin Islands are eligible to apply for these funds through the VI-WRRI. Collaborations with non-UVI personnel are allowed.

Two UVI Emerging Research Program Proposals Receive Funding
Of the eight proposals submitted for consideration for funding through the new UVI Emerging Research Program, two have been funded. They are "Investigating Coral White Plague Disease Across Reef Habitats in the U.S. Virgin Islands" by Dr. Marilyn Brandt and "State-of-the-Art Workstations Will Increase Quality and Efficiency of Nucleic Acid Research" at UVI by Dr. Jennilee Beth Robinson.
All proposals submitted received high commendation by the Review Committee but those that were funded were ranked highest using criteria established for the program that is intended to maintain or expand the University's research infrastructure or support new initiatives related to increasing externally funded USVI community relevant research at UVI. Support for the program comes from recovered indirect costs that are placed in a University Research Support Fund managed by the Provost, the Vice President for Administration and Finance and the Vice Provost for Research and Public Service. English Proficiency Examination (EPE) Test Scheduled for Nov. 3 at UVI
The English Proficiency Examination will be offered at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 3, 2011, at UVI. The test is administered in rooms 222 and 224 of the Sports & Fitness Center and in Evans Center rooms 302, 303, 305 and 308 on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix.
Students may register for the test at the Access & Enrollment Services reception desk in the Administration and Conference Center on St. Thomas and in the Access & Enrollment Services Office on St. Croix.
Online Registration for Spring and Summer Returning Students Now Available
Advisement and Online Registration for returning UVI students for the 2012 Spring Semester and Summer Sessions started on Wednesday, Oct. 26. Online registration is mandatory for all continuing students. Online registration for the Spring Semester continues until Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012; thereafter, a late registration fee of $75 will be incurred.

UVI Net Price Calculator Now Available for First-time Undergraduate Students
UVI Director of Financial Aid Cheryl Roberts has announced that, in keeping with the U.S Department of Education regulatory requirement, a UVI Net Price Calculator (NPC) is now available on the University website. The NPC is a tool for full-time, first-time degree seeking undergraduate students. The calculator prompts would-be students to enter basic information and then estimates the price of attendance and financial aid provided to students in a previous year. Supplemental Study Sessions Offered for Math Students on St. Thomas
Student on the St. Thomas campus having difficulty passing the Mathematics 023 or Mathematics 024 courses can now take advantage of a series of Supplemental Instruction Study Sessions being offered by CATS and the School of Science and Mathematics.

Energy Efficiency Workshops for Spanish Speakers Set for Nov. 12 on St. Thomas
The University of the Virgin Islands Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center will host a free workshop for members of the Hispanic community from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12, in the CELL Center on the St. Thomas campus. The workshop will be conducted entirely in Spanish and will provide Hispanic residents with valuable information to aid in reducing their energy costs, saving money and conserve energy.
This workshop - titled Energy Efficiency for Residential Consumers - is the last in the series designed to promote energy efficiency and encourage the use of renewable energy. The workshop series was made possible from funding received through the Energy Office Discretionary Grant Program, under the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
Participants will learn what factors contribute to high energy consumption in their households or businesses, learn strategies to mitigate the related fuel surcharge and gain valuable information transitioning to renewable energy technology.
Interested individuals should bring a copy of their most recent WAPA bill for a chance to obtain a free energy monitor, which can be used to track energy consumption and savings.
