Campus Fun Day Slated Today on Albert A. Sheen Campus

A "Campus Fun Day" with outdoor competitions is scheduled for today (Friday, Oct. 28) on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. Obstacle course and track races are slated from 3:15 to 3:55 p.m. A kickball competition follows from 4 to 4:45 p.m. The day concludes with a softball game from 4:50 to 5:50 p.m. The activities are sponsored by UVI's Student Affairs Office. All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate. The campus community is also invited to join the UVI Spirit Team. Musical entertainment will be included with Rashidi Clenance serving as the announcer. UVI Board of Trustees to Meet on St. Croix Oct. 29

Bucs Soccer Squad Downs UPR-Bayamon for First Road Win; Plays Sacred Heart Saturday

UVI's men's soccer squad is looking for their second win on the road in a game at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29, against Sacred Heart University, in the Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium in Bayamon. The Bucs hold a 2-1-2 record following their impressive 4-1 win over UPR-Bayamon on Saturday, Oct. 22, the team's first road win of their inaugural season.

UVI Net Price Calculator Now Available for First-time Undergraduate Students

UVI Director of Financial Aid Cheryl Roberts has announced that, in keeping with the U.S Department of Education regulatory requirement, a UVI Net Price Calculator (NPC) is now available on the University website. The NPC is a tool for full-time, first-time degree seeking undergraduate students. The calculator prompts would-be students to enter basic information and then estimates the price of attendance and financial aid provided to students in a previous year. AES Seminar on Pineapple Micropropagation Set for Oct. 31 on St. Croix

UVI's Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) will host a seminar titled "Pineapple Micropropagation and Flower Induction" from 1 to 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31. The seminar will be presented by Research Associate Professor Dr. Thomas W. Zimmerman and Research Analyst Carlos Montilla in room 133 of the Research and Extension Center building on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix.

The seminar, which is open to all, will cover the micropropagation of 11 varieties of pineapple obtained from the USDA Germplasm repository in Hawaii. Both solid and liquid in vitro media were evaluated with plant growth regulators to stimulate micropropagation. Micropropagated plants were established in a greenhouse prior to planting in a field trial on caliche soils. The auxin, naphthalene acetic acid, was used to induce flowering. Online Registration for Spring and Summer Returning Students Now Available

Advisement and Online Registration for returning UVI students for the 2012 Spring Semester and Summer Sessions started on Wednesday, Oct. 26. Online registration is mandatory for all continuing students. Online registration for the Spring Semester continues until Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012; thereafter, a late registration fee of $75 will be incurred.

UVI to Observe Liberty Day Holiday on Tuesday, Nov. 1

The University of the Virgin Islands will be closed on Tuesday, Nov. 1, in observance of the Liberty Day Holiday in the Virgin Islands. Classes will resume and administrative offices will reopen on their regular schedules on Wednesday, Nov. 2.

English Proficiency Examination (EPE) Test Scheduled for Nov. 3 at UVI

The English Proficiency Examination will be offered at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 3, 2011, at UVI. The test is administered in rooms 222 and 224 of the Sports & Fitness Center and in Evans Center rooms 302, 303, 305 and 308 on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix.

Students may register for the test at the Access & Enrollment Services reception desk in the Administration and Conference Center on St. Thomas and in the Access & Enrollment Services Office on St. Croix.

Reichhold Center Kassav' Performance Postponed; Spyro Gyra Set for Nov. 12

A performance by Kassav' - originally scheduled for today (Friday, Oct. 28) at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts - has been postponed until January. A new date will be posted on the Reichhold Center website - www.reichholdcenter.com - as soon as it is available. Ticket holders will be able to exchange tickets for new ones.

VIUCEDD to Host 8th Annual Voices that Count Conference on St. Thomas and St. Croix

The Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) will host the 8th Annual "Voices That Count" Conference on St. Thomas, on Nov. 2, and on St. Croix, on Nov. 3. The conference brings individuals with disabilities and their family members, service providers, advocates and public officials together to discuss issues that affect people with disabilities. This year's conference will feature a keynote address from James Flemming, a regional disability specialist from FEMA's Region II. Local officials will address territorial emergency and disaster preparedness and the afternoon session will feature legislative updates from local senators.

On St. Thomas, the conference runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the University of the Virgin Islands Administration & Conference Center from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. On St. Croix, the conference will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the UVI Great Hall. There is no fee for the event, but space is limited on both islands. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Co-ed Intramural Volleyball Continues on St. Croix

Albert A. Sheen Campus Holiday Gala Scheduled Dec. 10

The annual UVI Holiday Gala for the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix is slated for 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, at the Divi Carina Bay Resort. Music will be by X-press Band, with karaoke by Dean Hodge. Prizes and giveaways are planned. Faculty and staff admission is complimentary. Guest tickets are $40. Two UVI Emerging Research Program Proposals Receive Funding

Of the eight proposals submitted for consideration for funding through the new UVI Emerging Research Program, two have been funded. They are "Investigating Coral White Plague Disease Across Reef Habitats in the U.S. Virgin Islands" by Dr. Marilyn Brandt and "State-of-the-Art Workstations Will Increase Quality and Efficiency of Nucleic Acid Research" at UVI by Dr. Jennilee Beth Robinson.

All proposals submitted received high commendation by the Review Committee but those that were funded were ranked highest using criteria established for the program that is intended to maintain or expand the University's research infrastructure or support new initiatives related to increasing externally funded USVI community relevant research at UVI. Support for the program comes from recovered indirect costs that are placed in a University Research Support Fund managed by the Provost, the Vice President for Administration and Finance and the Vice Provost for Research and Public Service. Planning for 2012 Agriculture & Food Fair Under Way; Oct. 28 is Participation Deadline

UVI's Cooperative Extension Service (CES) has announced that it is time for the University community to begin planning for the 2012 Agriculture & Food Fair of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Agrifest 2012 will be held Feb. 18-20, on the Grounds of the Rudolph Shulterbrandt Agricultural Complex in Estate Lower Love on St. Croix. The theme for the fair will be "Youth in Agriculture - Growing our Future."

For 2012, all UVI exhibits must be integrated and interactive, and reflect the fair theme. No backdrops will be provided or allowed for displays. Units are encouraged to get their creative juices flowing and make sure their exhibits are hands-on and will engage fairgoers. Tabletop displays are acceptable.

Bucs Basketball Squad, Brothers With A Cause to Participate in Family Fun Day Oct. 29

UVI's Buccaneers men's basketball squad will join in the day-long Family Fun Day sponsored by the V.I. Law Enforcement Planning Commission on Saturday, Oct. 29, at Emile Griffith Ballpark on St. Thomas. The Bucs will play an exhibition game against the Governmental Men All Stars at noon. The day's theme is Positive Men Create Strong Families. The UVI group Brothers With A Cause will be on hand to present an affirmation message. The day begins at 8 a.m. with a motorcade from Fort Christian to the ballpark. A car show, live music by Top Notch Band, music by DJ Pete, games and a magic show are planned in addition to the exhibition game. St. Thomas/St. John Agriculture and Food Fair Set Nov. 5-6 at UVI on St. Thomas

The St. Thomas/St. John Agriculture and Food Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 5, and Sunday, Nov. 6, at the grounds of UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts on St. Thomas. The theme for this year's fair is "Farm Today for a Healthier Tomorrow." Entrance fees are $3 adults and $1 children under 12 years.

UVI Concert Choir Plans Concert Nov. 11 on St. Thomas Campus

The UVI Concert Choir, under the direction of Dr. Lorna Young-Wright, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, in the Dining Pavilion on the St. Thomas campus. St. Thomas Reef Fest 2011 Set for Nov. 13; Participants Sought

Interested groups and organizations are invited to join in the 2011 edition of St. Thomas Reef Fest which is scheduled for noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13, at Brewers Bay Beach. The Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service at UVI, in partnership with the Virgin Islands Network of Environmental Educators (VINE), the Lana Vento Foundation, the Environmental Association of St. Thomas and Sea Grant are sponsoring the event.

Reef Fest's goals are to raise awareness of the value of coral reef, promote environmental stewardship, and strengthen natural resource management and conservation. Activities such as educational games, snorkel clinics, sandcastle building, reef tours and presentations by experts in natural resources, science and management are planned. Environmental exhibits and activity booths will be presented by various government and community organizations, and local "green" vendors of both food and retail are encouraged. VI-WRRI Issues Call for Project Proposals; Submission Deadline Nov. 30

The Virgin Islands Water Resources Research Institute (VI-WRRI) at the University of the Virgin Islands has issued a Call for Proposals for the 2012 - 2013 U.S. Geological Survey Water Institute Program. Proposals that address water resources issues in the U.S. Virgin Islands are being sought. Funds for this program - approximately $80,000 - are made available through the Section 104 Institute Program of the U.S. Department of Interior - U.S. Geological Survey. All faculty and staff of the University of the Virgin Islands are eligible to apply for these funds through the VI-WRRI. Collaborations with non-UVI personnel are allowed.

Fall Graduation Requirements, Deadlines Announced

UVI seniors who intend to graduate in December of 2011 are advised that they must complete a graduation evaluation with their academic advisors and an online degree self-examination. The self-examination is available from this link on UVI's myCampus portal - https://mycampus.uvi.edu/web/mycampus/home.

On completion of a successful evaluation, students must apply for fall graduation by Oct. 31, 2011. The graduation application and payment must be submitted online at - https://mycampus.uvi.edu/web/mycampus/home. The fee is $75. It covers the diploma, and a cap and gown for use in commencement ceremonies in May 2012. Cap and gown measurements will be taken at the UVI Bookstores from Feb. 1, 2012 - March 15, 2012.

Supplemental Study Sessions Offered for Math Students on St. Thomas

Student on the St. Thomas campus having difficulty passing the Mathematics 023 or Mathematics 024 courses can now take advantage of a series of Supplemental Instruction Study Sessions being offered by CATS and the School of Science and Mathematics.

Study sessions are available in the CATS Center in CA Room 118 on the following schedule:

Monday through Friday - 10 to 11 a.m.

Monday and Friday - 2 to 3 p.m.

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday - 4 to 9 p.m.

Free Praxis Prep Course Helps Public School Teachers Become Highly Qualified

The University of the Virgin Islands - Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center in collaboration with the V.I. Department of Education, Division of Human Resources, announces that registration is open for the second session of Fall semester for its Praxis I & II prep course.

The six-week course will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every Saturday from Oct. 29, on the St. Thomas campus. On St. Croix, classes will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. weekdays from Oct. 31, at the St. Croix Educational Complex.

This course is free to public school teachers and is funded by the V.I. Department of Education. The program prepares public school teachers for the Praxis I and II exams so that they can be designated as highly qualified in order to meet the mandates of the No Child Left Behind Act.  To register, teachers must be employed by the Department of Education and provide verification of employment upon registering. Energy Efficiency Workshops for Spanish Speakers Set for Nov. 12 on St. Thomas

The University of the Virgin Islands Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center will host a free workshop for members of the Hispanic community from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12, in the CELL Center on the St. Thomas campus. The workshop will be conducted entirely in Spanish and will provide Hispanic residents with valuable information to aid in reducing their energy costs, saving money and conserve energy.

This workshop - titled Energy Efficiency for Residential Consumers - is the last in the series designed to promote energy efficiency and encourage the use of renewable energy. The workshop series was made possible from funding received through the Energy Office Discretionary Grant Program, under the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Participants will learn what factors contribute to high energy consumption in their households or businesses, learn strategies to mitigate the related fuel surcharge and gain valuable information transitioning to renewable energy technology.

Interested individuals should bring a copy of their most recent WAPA bill for a chance to obtain a free energy monitor, which can be used to track energy consumption and savings.
