UVI Opens... CONTINUES... Hispanic Heritage Month Activities Today on St. Croix
UVI continues its Hispanic Heritage Month observance on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix today (Friday, Oct. 7) with an evening of activities with a free Zumba health and fitness class at 5 p.m., refreshments and cultural performances, including the UVI Bucs Dance Squad, followed at 6 p.m. and a Latin Rhythm dance competition starts at 7 p.m. Dancers will compete for a cash prize. Today's activities take place in the Great Hall.
Next Friday, Oct. 14, UVI will host a special presentation by former Ecuadorian President Jamil Mahuad at 5 p.m. in the Great Hall. Mahuad, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, served as president of Ecuador from August of 1998 to January of 2000. He is expected to address Hispanic challenges and success in a keynote address.
UVI Intramural Stand-Up Boarding, Kayaking Set for Fridays in October
UVI students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in intramural stand-up boarding and kayaking on each Friday in October. Participants gather at 3 p.m. at the dock of UVI's MacLean Marine Science Center. Activities continue until dark. Six boards and six kayaks are available. There is no charge. Individuals with their own boards or boats should bring them.
Students, Volunteers Interested in Joining 4-H Invited to Session Oct. 8
The UVI Cooperative Extension Service is seeking students and volunteers who are interested in joining the 4-H club. An open information session for the public is scheduled at the CES office on the St. Thomas campus at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8. The session is part of the local observance of National 4-H Week. The goal is to celebrate the 4-H youth who have made an impact on the community, and are stepping up to the challenges of a complex and changing world. Hispanic Month Celebration Set Oct. 10 on St. Thomas Campus
UVI will host a Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 10, at the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. The celebration is open to all and especially to prospective UVI students and their parents. The day will feature performances by the Guateque Ballet Folklórico de Puerto Rico and the Charlotte Amalie High School Spanish Dancers. Hispanic cuisine will be available for purchase - students with valid UVI IDs eat free. A special highlight of the day will be a campus tour for prospective students at 2:15 p.m. The tour will be offered with commentary in Spanish. IA Component Retreat Set for Monday, Oct. 10
Staff of the Institutional Advancement (IA) component on St. Thomas and St. Croix (Development, Alumni Affairs, Reichhold Center for the Arts and Public Relations) will be participating in an all-day retreat on Monday, Oct. 10. Student Leadership Conference Set Nov. 4-5 on St. Croix; Sign-up Deadline Oct. 14
A student leadership conference titled "Leading with Purpose: Charting a Path to Student Success" is set for Nov. 4-5, on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. The Office of Student Activities will host the event at the Hibiscus Hotel, La Grande Princess. The keynote presentation will be made by Mona L. Barnes, the first female Command Sergeant Major of the Virgin Islands National Guard. All student organizations and clubs on the Albert A. Sheen Campus are urged to register two student representatives for the conference. The registration deadline is Oct. 14. Volunteers from UVI Community Sought for Two Events
Volunteers from the UVI community - students, faculty and staff - on St. Croix are sought to assist with two upcoming events, a multi-agency Children's Health Fair scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27, at UVI, and the fifth Project Homeless Connect, hosted by the VI Interagency Council for Homelessness from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28, at the Agricultural Complex. VI-WRRI Issues Call for Project Proposals; Submission Deadline Nov. 30
The Virgin Islands Water Resources Research Institute (VI-WRRI) at the University of the Virgin Islands has issued a Call for Proposals for the 2012 - 2013 U.S. Geological Survey Water Institute Program. Proposals that address water resources issues in the U.S. Virgin Islands are being sought. Funds for this program - approximately $80,000 - are made available through the Section 104 Institute Program of the U.S. Department of Interior - U.S. Geological Survey. All faculty and staff of the University of the Virgin Islands are eligible to apply for these funds through the VI-WRRI. Collaborations with non-UVI personnel are allowed.

Visiting Researcher on St. Croix to Discuss Satellite Tracking of Whimbrels on Oct. 8
The UVI community is invited to a presentation by visiting researcher Fletcher Smith describing the migration ecology of whimbrels tagged with satellite transmitters. Whimbrels are migratory seabirds which regularly visit St. Croix. The presentation is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8, in Evans Center Room 401 on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. The talk will also focus on a whimbrel named "Hope" as it makes the annual fall migration to St. Croix. This presentation is being given as part of International Migratory Bird Day festivities in the Caribbean.
Smith is a research biologist at Center for Conservation Biology at The College of William and Mary, and Virginia Commonwealth University. He has worked on a variety of resident and migrant bird species, studying diverse aspects of their biology, including breeding bird surveys, foraging strategies and migration patterns, reproductive success, and energy requirements of seasonal migrants. UVI Invites All Students to 13D Student Entrepreneurship Competition Meeting on Oct. 13
Are you a student entrepreneur with a business idea that you're passionate about? Do you have the persistence, passion and commitment to bring your idea to fruition but lack the cash? Are you prepared to work hard for the opportunity of a lifetime? If your answer to each of these questions is "Yes!" then the University of the Virgin Islands 13D Student Entrepreneurship Competition is what you've been waiting for.
An informational meeting about the competition has been scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the UVI Administration and Conference Center (ACC Rm. 142) on the St. Thomas campus and in the Great Hall on UVI's Albert A. Sheen campus on St. Croix.
Imagine winning the financing to launch your business in the spring of 2012. UVI and 13D are prepared to make this happen. The winning teams will be awarded cash prizes to support their business plans. First-place will receive $30,000, second-place will get $30,000 and third-place will win $10,000.
VIUCEDD, Blind Veterans Association to Host White Cane Safety Day Oct. 13 on St. Croix
The Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) and the Blind Veterans Association will host a White Cane Safety Day from 8 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Veterans Affairs Clinic in The Village Mall, Barren Spot, St. Croix. The local activity - along with a national event on Oct. 15 - will celebrate the achievements of blind and visually impaired people. One goal is to remind motorists and pedestrians to yield the right-of-way to blind and visually impaired individuals using canes. UVI Concert Band and Rising Stars Plan Concert/Competition on Oct. 15
The Virgin Islands public is invited to a concert by UVI's Concert Band and the Rising Stars Steel Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, at Charlotte Amalie High School on St. Thomas. The concert is titled "Motown Review" The evening will also include the "Second Classical Solo Steel Pan Competition." Guest performers are Danielle Greenaway, Ledell Mulraine, Evanna Chinnery, Danny Challenger, Eugene Kuntz, Vanessa Tamar, Rivo J. Hodge and "The Dudes." DHHS' Dr. Garth N. Graham Selected as Donna M. Christensen Inaugural Lecturer
The Caribbean Exploratory NIMHD Research Center for Excellence (CERC) at the University of the Virgin Islands School of Nursing has announced Dr. Garth N. Graham will be the inaugural Donna M. Christensen Series lecturer. The lecture will be presented during CERC's Fourth Annual Health Disparities Institute, set for Oct. 19-21, at Marriott Frenchman's Reef Resort on St. Thomas. Dr. Graham is the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Minority Health in the Office of Minority Health at the Department of Health and Human Services. Certification Program Offered for Human Resources Professionals on St. Croix
