UVI Soccer to Open Season with Home Game Saturday, Sept. 24, on St. Croix
UVI's men's soccer team is scheduled to begin play in the LAI (Liga Atlética Interuniversitaria) league with a home game on Saturday, Sept. 24. The Buccaneers, coached by Yohannes Worede, will host Polytechnica University. Game time is 2 p.m. The game will be played at the Paul E. Joseph Stadium in Frederiksted. Admission is free. V.I. Humanities Council to Honor UVI's Marvin E. Williams
The Virgin Islands Humanities Council will present the organization's Humanist Award posthumously to former UVI professor Marvin E. Williams on Friday, Sept. 30. Williams, who also served as editor of UVI's "The Caribbean Writer" anthology, will be honored during the Humanities Council's two-day, We The People initiative titled "Place, Time & Memory: 'Story Toh Tell!'" at Government House in Christiansted on St. Croix. Intramural Volleyball Begins Sept. 22 on St. Thomas; Players Sought
UVI's Intramural Department is seeking players for the 2011 St. Thomas campus coed volleyball league which will play on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All currently enrolled UVI students, as well as faculty and staff, are eligible. This is an opportunity to play with friends, get active and have fun. Now is the time to get teams together. A full team consists of 10 players and one non-playing coach, if desired. League rules limit male participation by never allowing more males on the court than females. A team may be all female. Introduction to American Sign Language Offered on St. Thomas, St. Croix in September
Introduction to American Sign Language (ASL) courses will be offered beginning in September on St. Thomas and St. Croix by UVI's Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD). The course is designed for individuals who work with person who are deaf or hard of hearing. Courses meet twice weekly and run for nine weeks. The cost is $100.
On St. Croix, the course is offered from 6 to 7:15 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays, from Sept. 19 through Nov. 17. It will take place in the VIUCEDD Conference Room at #1 Estate Golden Grove (across from Spicy Grill). CGTC Sets Teacher Workshop on Open Space Stewardship; Sign-up Deadline Sept. 20
UVI's Center for Green Technology will host a workshop exploring the Open Space Stewardship Program for Virgin Islands teachers on Sept. 27-29 in the Administration and Conference Center on the University's St. Thomas campus. The deadline for registration, which is free, is Sept. 20.
The workshop will be co-produced by the Brookhaven National Laboratory, which developed the Open Space Stewardship Program (OSSP). It is designed for biology, chemistry and environmental science teachers. It will explore the interdisciplinary nature of the OSSP and how it can serve as a basis for multiple content areas.
This practical, hands-on workshop provides an opportunity to experience the equipment and field techniques that are used in Open Space Stewardship Program. It is being offered to teachers at no charge. Certificates of completion for 15 hours of credit will be presented at the conclusion of the workshop.

Collaborative Strategic Planning Documents Available from myCampus Portal
Members of the University community - students, faculty and staff - are invited to review documents that have been produced during the initial stages of UVI's Collaborative Strategic Planning effort. The process is being used to develop the University's 2012-2017 Strategic Plan. The documents were generated by University faculty, staff and administrators in meetings and workshops that began on Oct. 8, 2010, and continued through Aug. 26, 2011. They are now available from a new "Strategic Planning" page in UVI's myCampus web portal.
Collaborative Strategic Planning sessions for UVI students are scheduled for Sept. 21, on St. Thomas, and for Sept. 22, on St. Croix. Documents detailing the ideas and comments will be added to the Strategic Planning page following those sessions.

CES Plans Healthy Homes Workshop for St. John on Sept. 29
A session of the Caribbean Healthy Homes Workshop offered by UVI's Cooperative Extension Service (CES) is scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 29, at UVI's St. John Academic Center in Cruz Bay. The free workshop provides training on toxic properties and adverse health effects of common household cleaning products and other items such as pesticides, furniture and treated fabrics. Participants will also learn how to read product labels and evaluate potential product toxicity, recipes for less-toxic cleaning alternatives using common household items and how to properly dispose of household hazardous waste.

Health and Wellness Day Slated Sept. 29 on UVI's St. Thomas Campus
A Health and Wellness Day for the UVI community and the general public will be held at the UVI Sports & Fitness Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus on Thursday, Sept. 29. The day's activities will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will include vision testing, Nikken therapy, HIV testing and counseling, stress reduction activities, massage therapy and more. UVI Theatre Announces Open Auditions for Holiday Play
The University of the Virgin Islands Theatre announces open auditions for its upcoming holiday play, O Christmas Three! The work is a trilogy of short holiday plays for children, including Dorcas the Christmas Duck (Or Vincent the Violet-Nosed Vulture - A Cautionary Tale), Peas on Earth (A Birds-Eye View of Christmas) and The Last Straw (Holiday Fable). The play will be produced during the holiday season and will include performances at selected local schools as part of UVI's community outreach effort.
The production needs actors, singers, dancers, gymnasts, builders, painters, electricians, costumers, hair and make-up designers, and musicians, especially those who play keyboard/synthesizer, bass, drums and guitar. Auditions are open to all members of the UVI community and to members of the greater community who are of junior high school age or older. College credit is available for participation.

Construction Projects Planned for Upper Campus on St. Thomas
UVI's Office of Capital Projects has announced that a series of construction projects that are part of an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) Accessibility Project will begin today (Thursday, Sept. 15) on the Upper Campus area of the St. Thomas campus. The work will take place in the area of the Paiewonsky Library and the Nursing, Science, Business and Teacher Education buildings.
While the work is expected to continue through the end of the semester, every effort will be made to minimize disruption of classes and other activities. Access to each of the buildings will be maintained while contractors are working, and all appropriate safety measures will be in effect. UVI students, faculty and staff, as well as visitors, are urged to exercise caution while walking through the impacted area. Everyone is asked to pay close attention to signage posted for their protection.
UVI 2010 Graduate Alvaro de Lugo to Play Pro Volleyball in Puerto Rico
Stand-out UVI athlete Alvaro de Lugo, who graduated in 2011 with a degree in computer science, has signed a contract to play professional volleyball in Puerto Rico. He will play for a team in Mayaguez which competes in the Puerto Rico Volleyball Federation's Superior Volleyball League.
De Lugo was a starter on UVI's volleyball and basketball squads for four years and served as captain for both teams.
"Alvaro is the first known Virgin Islander to earn a professional volleyball contract offer in Puerto Rico and we are very proud of him," said UVI Athletic Director Peter Sauer. First 'Buzzaar' Sessions Will Commemorate Virgin Fresh Beekeeping Project
The First Annual Virgin Fresh Beekeeping "Buzzaar" will commemorate the Virgin Fresh Beekeeping Project with sessions on St. Croix and St. Thomas in September. The activity is sponsored by the V.I. Department of Agriculture, in association with the UVI Cooperative Extension Service, the VI Department of Tourism, the Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center and Virgin Islands beekeepers.
On St. Croix, the "Buzzaar" will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, in the Sunshine Mall parking lot. On St. Thomas, the event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, near the center court at the Tutu Park Mall.
The "Buzzaar" will feature educational displays and exhibits (including an observation bee hive). Raw products and bi-products from bee hives will also be available for sale, including a wide variety of honey, bee pollen, lotions, soaps, lip balms, honeycomb, candles and beekeeping supplies. All products that will be displayed were locally produced, prepared and packaged.

University Community Urged to Begin Planning for 2012 Agriculture & Food Fair
UVI's Cooperative Extension Service (CES) has announced that it is time for the University community to begin planning for the 2012 Agriculture & Food Fair of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Agrifest 2012 will be held Feb. 18-20, on the Grounds of the Rudolph Shulterbrandt Agricultural Complex in Estate Lower Love on St. Croix. The theme for the fair will be "Youth in Agriculture - Growing our Future."
Next year the University will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary and the 40th Anniversary of UVI's status as a Land-Grant Institution. "That means we are pulling out all the stops," said CES Public Information Specialist Clarice Clarke. "Our exhibit, of course, will be better than last year as we look forward to various units within the University to showcase their services to our community."
For 2012, all UVI exhibits must be integrated and interactive, and reflect the fair theme. No backdrops will be provided or allowed for displays. Units are encouraged to get their creative juices flowing and make sure their exhibits are hands-on and will engage fairgoers. Tabletop displays are acceptable.
The UVI exhibit area must reflect the creativity and professionalism of the institution, so all tables will be draped with uniform table covers. SBDC Luncheon Meetings to Focus on Procurement
The Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center will offer luncheon meetings on St. Croix and St. Thomas focusing on the procurement process. The session is titled "How to Prepare a Correct Estimate for Bidding On Work -Part 2." The speakers are Michael Weary, the Virgin Islands tenant and property operations service manager for the General Services Administration (GSA), and Jennifer Heno, the small business advocate for the GSA's Public Building Services.

Certification Program Offered for Human Resources Professionals on St. Croix

The University of the Virgin Islands Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center is offering a course for individuals and small businesses who are interested in learning to use QuickBooks, the full-featured small business accounting software program.
