UVI Community Invited to Man Up Conference

UVI President Dr. David Hall has extended a special invitation to the UVI community, the students in our public and private junior and senior high schools and members of the greater Virgin Islands community to the second Man Up, Male Empowerment Conference at UVI. The St. Thomas session of the conference is scheduled for Feb. 9, 2012 at the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. The St. Croix session was held on Tuesday, Feb. 7, on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus.

In a note to the UVI community, Dr. Hall wrote:

Because of the anticipated large turnout at these events, we have to be concerned with the safety of each and every person participating in and attending the conference. I am requesting your assistance and cooperation in this matter by asking you to comply with all safety directives and procedures which will be put in place by our own security officers working in conjunction with members of the Virgin Islands Police Department. Parking Restrictions, Security Precautions Set for Man Up Conference on St. Thomas Campus

Morning and evening sessions of the 2012 Man Up Conference are scheduled in the UVI Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus for Thursday, Feb. 9.

The following parking and security precautions have been announced by the UVI Security Office. They will be in effect on Thursday, Feb. 9, for all students, faculty and staff attending class or participating in the Man Up Conference in the Sports & Fitness Center.

  • All students, faculty and staff are asked to park on the upper campus and utilize the campus shuttle for transportation to from the Sports and Fitness Center and Wellness Center on Thursday during both day and evening sessions of the conference.
  • No one will be allowed to enter the Sports & Fitness Center with a backpack or briefcase.
  • Entry and exit from the Sports & Fitness Center will only be allowed through the front doors.
  • Due to the security measures at the conference, entry into the building may be delayed. All Faculty and students should allow extra time to avoid being late for class or to attend the conference.

Visiting Musicians Plan Special Music Recital Feb. 9 on St. Thomas Campus

The UVI Community is invited to a special music recital by visiting musicians Julian Lawrence Gargiulo and Joe Burgstaller from 12:15 to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9, in the Music Building on the St. Thomas campus. The recital is sponsored by UVI's College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.

Gargiulo is a dynamic classical pianist who renders the compositions of renowned masters with extraordinary passion and precision, and fills the concert hall with his personal brand of charm, humor and charisma. He has performed to public and critical acclaim in the United States, Italy, France, Germany, England, Russia, Singapore and Australia.

Burgstaller is a trumpeter who has thrilled audiences worldwide with his dazzling virtuosity, captivating sensitivity and engaging personality. He was featured as trumpeter and arranger with the Canadian Brass for seven and a half years, and the avant-garde Meridian Arts Ensemble for six years. He was one of the all-time most popular soloists at Columbia Artists' Community Concerts, performing over 60 solo concerts per year. Burgstaller has performed in front of more than 40 orchestras, including those in Philadelphia, Minnesota, Detroit, Houston, Baltimore and New Jersey, and in more than 50 music festivals. He has also performed and taught at over 80 universities, conservatories and colleges. His extensive discography includes the solo CD "The Virtuoso Trumpet" and three Top-10 Billboard hits with Canadian Brass. His last two CDs, with his crossover group BM4, made the Top-50 on the JazzRadio charts and the Roots Radio.

'We Are UVI' Submissions Sought; Do You Know This Weeks Contributor?

The Golden Jubilee "We Are UVI" web project - sharing the stories of individuals who have had a close affiliation with the University at some point during the last 50 years - was updated with the latest entry on Sunday, Feb 5. Can you identify who it is from the accompanying photo?

The entry joins previous submissions from Sinclair Wilkinson ('72), Rafe Boulon, Jr. ('76), Carmie Thompson ('10), Frank Mills ('67) and James Rakocy. A new submission is being featured each week during 2012.

"We Are UVI" can be viewed from a link at the right of the UVI homepage - www.uvi.edu - or from this direct link. Interested individuals are encouraged to add their own comments to any submissions. Everyone is invited to share the "We Are UVI" page via e-mail and social media links which accompany each entry. Narratives and photos are still being assembled for the ongoing project. Monthly Newsletter dateline: UVI Covers 50th Anniversary Receptions; New Soccer Fields

The January issue of the monthly newsletter dateline: UVI is now available from the Public Relations section of the UVI website - www.uvi.edu - and from this direct link. The issue covers the Golden Jubilee receptions held on St. John, St. Thomas and St. Croix to mark the beginning of the University's 50th anniversary year. Also featured are the "50 for 50 Challenge" unveiled by UVI President Dr. David Hall during the receptions. Finally a photo of the groundbreaking ceremony for new UVI soccer fields on the Albert A. CLEP Test Dates Set on St. Thomas Campus

Students are advised that the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test dates for the Spring 2012 semester have been finalized on the St. Thomas campus. CLEP tests will be administered on Feb. 24, March 22, April 11 and April 17, in the CATS computer lab (CA Building Room 123). Students can register for the test at the Office of Access and Enrollment Services' front desk, located on the first floor of the Administration and Conference Center.

Test candidates must report to the test site no later than 9:30 a.m. on the test day with appropriate identification and form of payment. Acceptable forms of identification include a current driver's license, state or federal ID, a current passport, tribal ID card, naturalization card or certificate of citizenship.

The cost associated with CLEP is $77 (payable to College Board) per test and an additional administrative fee of $15 (payable to UVI prior to the test date). Payment must be made in the form of check, money order, or credit card. Cash will not be accepted. Students can email cmorris@uvi.edu for additional information.

Angelique Kidjo Performs at UVI's Reichhold Center on Feb. 25

Angelique Kidjo, one of the greatest forces in World music, will perform at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25. A native of Benin, Kidjo's music is steeped in the tribal and pop rhythms of her West African heritage. Her earthy voice spans musical boundaries, blending funk, salsa, jazz, rumba, makossa and souk. Discount Reichhold Center Tickets Available to UVI Students, Faculty, Staff

UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts offers special discount ticket rates for UVI students, faculty and staff. Buy individual tickets for select performances in the Reichhold Center Foundation Series and receive $10 off each ticket. Discounts are limited to two tickets per person per show. Purchase tickets for packages of four or five shows in the Foundation Series and receive $12 off each ticket (a savings of $8 to $60). Discounts are limited to two packages per person. Discount tickets are only available for seats in the uncovered section. They cannot be combined with other discounts and apply only to new ticket purchases.

UVI Bucs, Lady Bucs Basketball Squads Open Regular Season Play Feb. 10 and 11

UVI's Buccaneers men's basketball squad travel to Puerto Rico on Friday, Feb. 10 to open begin their 2012 regular-season play UPR-Humacoa in a 6:30 p.m. game. The Lady Bucs open their season on with a road match-up against UPR-Carolina at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11. The men's squad will take on their UPR-Carolina counterparts in the evening's second game at 8 p.m.

UVI's 2012 basketball season stretches through mid-April, when the finals are scheduled. The Bucs' and Lady Bucs' first home games are slated for Feb. 25.

UVI Celebrates Black History Month

UVI is celebrating Black History Month with a series of student activities on both campuses. A new Black History Month webpage lists UVI's upcoming Black Heritage events and includes links to compelling stories from successful black entrepreneurs, black CEO's, black executives and black business leaders from around the world. UVI-RTPark Executive Committee to Meet Monday, Feb. 13

The UVI RTPark has scheduled a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors for 2 p.m. (AST) on Monday, Feb. 13, 2012. The session will be available by teleconference. SGA to Host St. Croix Campus Shadow Our Students Program on March 13

The Student Government Association on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix will host its sixth annual SOS (Shadow Our Students) Program on Tuesday, March 13. The program is designed to enhance UVI's recruitment efforts and build mentoring relationships between UVI students and graduating seniors in the local high schools.

This year's theme is "SOS: Celebrating 50 Years of Students Success." UVI students who have made a significant impact at UVI and the wider community will be highlighted. The presenters will be State Command Sergeant Major Mona L. Barnes, of the Virgin Islands National Guard, and highly regarded motivational speaker Keith L. Brown.

Research Day Activity Set April 14; Submissions Sought

In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the University of the Virgin Islands, a Research Day activity will be held on April 14, 2012, on UVI campuses on St. Thomas and St. Croix. The UVI Research Day Committee has issued a call for submissions of posters and roundtable discussion topics for inclusion in the Research Day program.

The roundtable sessions will allow a group of participants to convene with the goal of generating discussion around a shared concern. The poster session allows participants to present their research and have informal discussions with attendees.

The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012. Contributions may be submitted using the form available at this link: www.surveymonkey.com/s/UVIResearchDay. Miss UVI to Host Leadership Seminar, Little Princess Tea Party on St. Croix on Feb. 10

Daniella Henry, Miss University of the Virgin Islands 2011-2012, will host a leadership and "Little Princess Tea Party" on Friday, Feb. 10. The session is for girls in the 5th and 6th grades who attend St. Croix's Charles H. Emanuel Elementary School. The activity will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Great Hall on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix.

Henry said the activity was developed in keeping with the UVI's Golden Jubilee theme "Honoring Our Past - Creating Our Future." It is designed to help young girls begin to develop a legacy of excellence by "sharing with them the past that brought us where we are today," she said. More than 30 girls are expected to attend seminar sessions covering the following topics: leadership development, etiquette, modeling and photography (building confidence within you) and building relationships (making friends and keeping them). Henry will be assisted by five members of the Queen's Club support team - Kevin Dixon, Keila Medina, Jmail George, Nia Victor and Trechelle Ekpe - and other student volunteers from the Sheen Campus.

Submissions for UVI Golden Jubilee Time Capsules Sought

Submissions of ideas for commemorative items to be placed in UVI Golden Jubilee time capsules on both campuses are sought by the Time Capsule Subcommittee of UVI's Golden Jubilee Committee.

"This is our opportunity to pass on legacies, lessons, knowledge, formulas, equations and models that may impact humanity, along with artifacts, poetry, hopes and dreams," said Raquel Silver chair of the subcommittee. "What do we want our students, alumni, faculty and staff to know about our University, our community and the early 21st Century?"

Contributions will be accepted from UVI students, alumni, departments and staff members. Collection of items will commence March 1, and conclude Oct, 31. Please submit items to be considered for inclusion in the time capsule. Indicate the contributor's name, department and campus, and include contact information. Items can be mailed or dropped off as follows:

VIUCEDD to Offer American Sign Language Class Beginning Feb. 27

The Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) will offer a ten week class in American Sign Language starting Feb. 27. Classes will be held in St. Thomas on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the University and in St. Croix on Mondays and Thursdays from 6:00-7:15 p.m. at the VIUCEDD office. 'The Caribbean Writer' Issues Call for Cover Art; Deadline Feb. 29

"The Caribbean Writer" - the international, literary anthology published by the University of the Virgin Islands - is soliciting colorful, eye-catching, Caribbean artwork for the cover of its upcoming issue. This issue, Volume 26 of the celebrated journal, will be dedicated to the environment, with the theme: Nature and Ecology.

Artists who want their work to be considered for use should submit it in vertical orientation, in either TIFF or JPG format, with a resolution of 300 dpi or greater. Black and white art (line drawings, sketches, block prints, etc.) is also needed for use inside the 300-page publication. Vertical orientation is also preferred for these submissions. Please include all necessary contact information and a brief biographical note with art submissions and email to submit@thecaribbeanwriter.org. The deadline for artwork submission is Feb. 29, 2012. Seaborne Update Requires UVI Travelers to Obtain Tickets Before Making Reservations

UVI travelers using Seaborne Airlines must now obtain tickets from the UVI Purchasing Office prior to making their reservations. Seaborne has informed UVI that reservations cannot be entered into the new system unless the traveler furnishes the airline with specific ticket numbers. UVI Posts 2012-2013 Scholarship Application Forms; Application Deadline March 1

UVI's Financial Aid Office has posted scholarship application forms for the 2012-2013 academic year on the Financial Aid section of the UVI web site - www.uvi.edu. The applications are for high school students, and for graduate and undergraduate (including international students). The forms include detailed information on requirements and what types of scholarships are available. The deadline to submit a scholarship application is March 1.

Free Stress Relief Hour Program Set for Mondays through Thursdays

The Student Health Services Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus is offering a "Stress Relief Hour" from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays. The program offers 10-minute sessions with natural healing and magnetic resonance therapy. The service is free to all students, faculty and staff.
