The community is invited to the Agricultural Enrichment Summer Camp Closing Ceremony on Friday, August 7, in the 1st floor conference room of the University of the Virgin Islands Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. During the ceremony, eighteen students will be recognized for completing training in the field of agricultural science. The ceremony will also showcase presentations by the students that reflect their summer experiences while working directly with a diversity of agriculture professionals, including crop and livestock producers, landscapers, agricultural instructors, inspectors, enforcement officers, etc. during the six week program which began on June 29, 2015. Partnering with the Department of Human Services, the Department of Labor, and the Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, the UVI Cooperative Extension Service (UVI-CES) hosted the camp on the UVI St. Thomas campus. Students from various schools within the age group of 14 – 21 years of age were involved. In addition to working in the UVI-CES Demonstration Garden with Albion “Chico” George, the students enjoyed numerous field trips and engaged in a wide variety of learning and fun-filled activities to further stimulate their interest in agricultural areas. The six week program was designed to increase knowledge and create awareness of career and work opportunities in the field of agricultural science. The second objective of this initiative was to equip the participants with job preparation skills through classroom presentations, practical exercises and field activities.
