Study abroad in Cuernavaca,Mexico
Andrea Burgess, Agnes Nicholas and Yulanda Woodley, three UVI students, participated last summer
in a study abroad program at Universidad Internacional, The Center for Bilingual Multicultural Studies in Cuernavaca, México.
The students took 5 hours of Spanish classes a day, living in the homes of Mexicans and participating in several excursions.
Andrea, Agnes and Yulanda are serious about learning Spanish and will benefit tremendously from this experience.

UVI / UNINTER Collaboration
The University of the Virgin Islands has entered into a collaborative agreement
with the Universidad Internacional The Center for Bilingual Multicultural Studies that
allows students to participate in an exchange program. If you are interested in becoming more proficient
in Spanish this is an opportunity for you.

Dr. Patricia Harkins-Pierre
will publish a chapter in a chapter titled "Religion Bridge: Translating Secular into Sacred Music,
A Study of World Christianity focusing on the U.S. Virgin Islands." The chapter will be included in a collection of essays
on World Christianity to be published by either Oxford University Press or Eerdman's Publishing
House. Negotiations should be finalized early Fall 2003 and a publishing
date set.
has received two mini -grants from the VI Community Foundation, one for
$800 to re-fund the Enid Baa St. Thomas Friends of the Library Saturday
morning Children's Program August 2003 - August 2004; and one for $400 to
use as seed money for the Fall 2003 second USVI KIDSCOUNT Children's
Literature and Literacy Conference (to held on the UVI campus again, I hope).
Dr. Vincent Cooper
will present the 5th independence lecture (Sept. 17th 2003) on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the independence of St.Kitts-Nevis.
>will address the theme: Responding to the challenges of the Global Environment in the 21st century.
Dr. Lorna C. Young-Wright and Dr. Souley Ousman
have received unofficial notification of an ESL grant.
will use the award to facilitate the expansion of the Division's writing program
and the teaching of writing to foreign students.
