UVI to Celebrate 55th Emerald Jubilee March 16-26

March 16, 2017 - The University of the Virgin Islands will celebrate its 55th Emerald Jubilee throughout the month of March with multiple events and activities. Originally chartered by the Fourth Legislature on March 16, 1962, the then College of the Virgin Islands served the community as a publicly funded, co-educational, liberal arts institution. Today UVI offers 46 degree programs including, 37 undergraduate degrees and nine graduate degrees through five schools and colleges: Business, Education, Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Nursing, and Science and Mathematics. The University also now offers a rigorous doctoral program where students can obtain a Ph.D. in Creative Leadership for Innovation and Change.Read More

UVI Students Lead Effort to Win the Home Depot’s “Retool Your School” Grant

March 06, 2017 - The University of the Virgin Islands is currently in sixth place out of 23 moderately sized Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) that are participating in The Home Depot “Retool Your School” Campus Improvement Grant Program. Seventy-one schools are participating overall. This program, currently in its eighth year, was developed by Home Depot Store Support Inc. to recognize and encourage innovative projects that enhance the campuses of America’s treasured Historically Black Colleges and Universities.Read More

UVI Astronomers Granted Access to World’s Largest Telescopes

February 28, 2017 - Astronomers at the University of the Virgin Islands were granted access to two of the world’s largest telescopes in Chile and Hawaii by the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO). Scientists, collaborators and students will now be better equipped to study gamma-ray bursts (GRB), explosive phenomena generated by exploding stars 30 to 100 times larger than our sun. These may be the first generation of stars ever to have formed in the universe, which makes their analysis critical to our deepening understanding of the formation of the universe.Read More

UVI Student Researcher Awarded AES;CES Scholarship

February 22, 2017 - The University of the Virgin Islands Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) and Cooperative Extension Service (CES) granted Samuel Joseph a $500 scholarship. Joseph, a junior Information Systems and Technology major on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix, received the scholarship check along with a certificate on Jan. 31, 2017, at the first AES student research meeting of spring 2017 semester.Read More

Nine UVI Students Receive $750 Business Design Grants

February 21, 2017 - Nine students have successfully completed the second Business Design Grants Program (BDGP) at the University of the Virgin Islands, the first step on the road to victory in the annual 13D Entrepreneurship competition where students compete for $60,000 in cash resources to launch their viable business proposals. Those who completed the Business Design Grants Program were each awarded a $750 grant.Read More

Humpback Whales Sighted in Brewers Bay Near UVI

February 14, 2017 - Two humpback whales and a calf were spotted on Monday, Feb. 13, in Brewers Bay, near the University of the Virgin Islands in the early morning hours. Bystanders suspect that one of the whales gave birth to the calf last night in the bay, but this is unconfirmed. Read More

VI Marine Advisory Service Implements Mangrove Planting Project

February 14, 2017 - The Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service (VIMAS) has just implemented its Mangrove Planting Project at two schools on St. Thomas: Lockhart Elementary School and Addelita Cancryn Junior High School. The project recruits K-12 students to help rebuild red mangrove forests on St. Thomas, 50 -75 percent of which have been lost to development over the last century.Read More

VI Educators Reduce Marine Debris & Educate Youth with UVI Grant

January 19, 2017 - Fifteen Virgin Islands educators have been awarded $26,648 for marine environmental projects that aim to educate and reduce pollution in the ocean. The “Pride in our Seas, Pride in Ourselves: Preventing Land-Based Sources of Marine Debris in the USVI through Educational Transformation and Community Engagement” project was made possible by a $99,411 marine debris education and prevention grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Marine Debris Program.Read More
