April 11, 2017 - The University of the Virgin Islands will host the 3rd Annual Virgin Islands Literary Festival from April 19 to 22, on St. Croix. The 2017 VI Literary Festival and Book Fair will honor its founder, Dr. Simon Jones-Hendrickson, as part of its 3rd annual event. Dr. Jones-Hendrickson, a former dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at the University, is being recognized for his vision in launching the festival on St Croix. He set the foundation for making it a premiere annual event, drawing local, regional and national audiences. Prime Minister of Denmark Announces Scholarship Program at UVI

April 06, 2017 - The Prime Minister of Denmark, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, arrived at the University of the Virgin Islands on the morning of April 1, bearing gifts: An announcement that the Danish government will establish a scholarship program for students from the University of the Virgin Islands to study at a Danish university for one semester. This scholarship program, which provides approximately $1 million Danish krone or $143,300 U.S. Dollars, will cover the costs of tuition and living expenses for up to 10 students each year, for an initial five-year period. April 05, 2017 - An assortment of triumphant cooks went home with prizes at the end of the University of the Virgin Islands Afternoon on the Green (AOTG) festivities held Sunday, March 19, on the Herman E. Moore Golf Course on the St. Thomas Campus. Awards were presented to some 50 volunteers who prepared meals to serve to community members. March 28, 2017 - The University of the Virgin Islands-led project, “Supporting Emerging Aquatic Scientists (SEAS) Your Tomorrow” program was chosen out of 36 grants distributed across the country to be featured in the National Science Foundation (NSF) Inclusion across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers in Engineering and Science (INCLUDES): Envisioning Impact Video Showcase. The University of the Virgin Islands, along with Pennsylvania State University, Southern Utah University and local partners, was recently awarded a $300,000 grant from NSF to encourage more students in the U.S. Virgin Islands to engage in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). UVI President David Hall Receives a Check on Behalf of Rachel Hamilton

Scholarship Donations for $250,000 Pledged to UVI

March 28, 2017 - Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars were pledged to the University of the Virgin Islands for scholarships in the name of Rachel Hamilton, a UVI alum and treasured employee of Territory East Asset Management, LLC (“TEAM Consulting”), a longtime St. Croix company and beneficiary of the Economic Development Commission (EDC) program. Hamilton passed away a couple of years ago, and in her honor the Rachel Hamilton TEAM Consulting Memorial Scholarship was presented on Friday, March 3, at the Employee Appreciation Reception at Research and Technology Park on St. Croix. The funds will help many UVI students finance their educations over a five year period.Read More

UVI to Celebrate 55th Emerald Jubilee March 16-26

March 16, 2017 - The University of the Virgin Islands will celebrate its 55th Emerald Jubilee throughout the month of March with multiple events and activities. Originally chartered by the Fourth Legislature on March 16, 1962, the then College of the Virgin Islands served the community as a publicly funded, co-educational, liberal arts institution. Today UVI offers 46 degree programs including, 37 undergraduate degrees and nine graduate degrees through five schools and colleges: Business, Education, Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Nursing, and Science and Mathematics. The University also now offers a rigorous doctoral program where students can obtain a Ph.D. in Creative Leadership for Innovation and Change.Read More

March 06, 2017 - The University of the Virgin Islands is currently in sixth place out of 23 moderately sized Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) that are participating in The Home Depot “Retool Your School” Campus Improvement Grant Program. Seventy-one schools are participating overall. UVI Astronomers Granted Access to World’s Largest Telescopes

February 28, 2017 - Astronomers at the University of the Virgin Islands were granted access to two of the world’s largest telescopes in Chile and Hawaii by the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO). Scientists, collaborators and students will now be better equipped to study gamma-ray bursts (GRB), explosive phenomena generated by exploding stars 30 to 100 times larger than our sun. These may be the first generation of stars ever to have formed in the universe, which makes their analysis critical to our deepening understanding of the formation of the universe.Read More

February 21, 2017 - Nine students have successfully completed the second Business Design Grants Program (BDGP) at the University of the Virgin Islands, the first step on the road to victory in the annual 13D Entrepreneurship competition where students compete for $60,000 in cash resources to launch their viable business proposals. VI Marine Advisory Service Implements Mangrove Planting Project

February 14, 2017 - The Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service (VIMAS) has just implemented its Mangrove Planting Project at two schools on St. Thomas: Lockhart Elementary School and Addelita Cancryn Junior High School. The project recruits K-12 students to help rebuild red mangrove forests on St. Thomas, 50 -75 percent of which have been lost to development over the last century.Read More

VI Educators Reduce Marine Debris & Educate Youth with UVI Grant

January 19, 2017 - Fifteen Virgin Islands educators have been awarded $26,648 for marine environmental projects that aim to educate and reduce pollution in the ocean. The “Pride in our Seas, Pride in Ourselves: Preventing Land-Based Sources of Marine Debris in the USVI through Educational Transformation and Community Engagement” project was made possible by a $99,411 marine debris education and prevention grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Marine Debris Program.Read More
