The University of the Virgin Islands’ Environmental Science 365 (ENV 365) class invites the public to commemorate Earth Day on April 22, with a symposium held on the event’s 46th anniversary. The event titled “Earth Day Symposium: Solid Waste in the Territory” will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas Campus.

During the first Earth Day, the movement gave voice to an emerging consciousness, channeling human energy toward environmental issues. This year at UVI, the symposium will focus on solid waste disposal in the territory. This event will feature guest speakers, poster presentations, demonstrations, music and creative contests.

On April 1, Virgin Islands Gov. Kenneth Mapp proclaimed April 22, Earth Day in the territory. In his proclamation, he called upon all inhabitants of the United States Virgin Islands  to re-educate themselves about the need to protect our environment and join the students of the Spring 2016 Environmental Science 365 class at the University of the Virgin Islands to bring about an event focused on solid waste disposal and recycling.

“My class and I feel it is important for Caribbean territories and nations to join in this effort,” said Dr. Sandy Wyllie-Echeverria, adjunct professor for the College of Science and Mathematics at UVI.  “We reached out to Dr. Denis Hayes, national coordinator for the first Earth Day in 1970. Dr. Hayes was pleased at this student initiative and encouraged an effort to help build momentum for the 50 year anniversary in 2020.”

Dr. Wyllie-Echeverria urged the public to attend to learn about issues concerning solid waste disposal and recycling, through a teach in format, enjoy good music and finger foods, and generally have a good time.”

The event will feature “Teach In” presentations by Cordell Jacobs and Mario Leonard of the VI Waste Management Association and Steve Johnson of UVI. Frank Di Massa will present on UVI Solar Projects and there will be presentations from the ENV  365 class.
