Future Nurses Club Organized at UVI

Spring, 2004

Pictured here are some of the more than 40 middle school students who participated in the Future Nurses of St. Croix program during the past school year. The students came from all three of the public middle schools and from Country Day School. A program was presented every other month, dealing with health care or nursing as a career. The students were also counseled regarding the courses that they needed to take when they reached high school in order to be better equipped to handle the challenges of a nursing or other health career program. A follow up meeting with student representatives and counselors/principles from the middle schools was also held and students acted as representatives for their school.

Professor Janzie Allmacher, pictured above, along with Division Chair Joan Marsh, started the Future Nurses Club as a part of a three-year Workforce Diversity Grant they received last year from the Bureau of Health Professions totaling $443,539, to increase the enrollment, retention and graduation of disadvantaged nursing students.
