UVI Students Participate in Health Fair

On October 22nd and 23rd, as a service learning project, students in NUR 131, Nursing Skills Acquisition taught by Professor Janzie Allmacher and Professor Joan Marsh, participated in the VI Careforce Health Fair at the Aldersville Senior Center in Frederiksted. The course and lab schedule were designed so that all students would have been checked off on skills that they would need to utilize at the health fair. After participation in the health fair, students were given an written assignment in which they were asked to identify how they functioned as "provider of care". "manager of care", and "member within the discipline of nursing".

Students said they found the experience valuable because it allowed them to perform the skills "on real people". They had an opportunity to do blood pressure and glucose measurement, administer flu vaccines, and practice therapeutic communication.
