Nursing Professor Selected to Serve on NCLEX Panel
University of the Virgin Islands Associate Professor of Nursing Dr. Laura
Glover, R.N. served as an item development panel member for the National Council
Licensure Examination (NCLEX) held August 14 to 17 in Chicago, Illinois. As one
of the 12 nurses from across the nation selected for this prestigious
assignment, Dr. Glover created questions and items that will be used in the
NCLEX-RN exam.
The examination, administered to all nurses in the U.S. and
U.S. territories, identifies those candidates who demonstrate minimal competence
to practice nursing at the entry level. Passing the NCLEX-RN examination is one
of the requirements necessary for becoming a registered nurse.
"It is an honor to serve the nursing profession on a national level," said
Dr. Glover, a professor on the St. Croix campus. This is the second time that
Dr. Glover has served as an item writer, the first time was in 1999.
"We are very pleased to have had Dr. Glover chosen on two occasions to write
items for the NCLEX-RN. It speaks to the great qualifications of our faculty
when an organization like the National Council of State Boards of Nursing picks
one of our own to take part in this very important effort," said Nursing
Division Chairperson Joan Marsh.
Having learned detailed information about the NCLEX-RN, Dr. Glover said that she
can better prepare her students for the examination. Marsh added, "We strive to
make our exams look as much like the NCLEX-RN as possible, and having someone
here who has actually written items for the exam is a great benefit to us and to
our students, who also gain by having been introduced not only to the required
content areas, but to test items that are written in the actual style of the
NCLEX."
UVI's St. Croix campus offers an Associate of Science degree in nursing that
qualifies graduates to take the NCLEX-RN. The nursing program is accredited by
the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.
