The accreditation for the University of the Virgin Islands Nursing Degree
program on the St. Croix Campus has been renewed for the next eight years. In
March, the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission overwhelmingly
approved the renewal, following a site visit and an evaluation review panel
meeting.
UVI's St. Croix Nursing Chair Joan Marsh said that in overviews of nursing
programs around the nation, the NLN lists patterns of strength and patterns of
concern. It listed no patterns of concern for UVI's associate degree program.
"With no concerns listed, that means they found no problems, none whatsoever,"
Ms. Marsh said. "We're extremely pleased," she added. As a pattern of strength
it noted, "program support from university administration, faculty and
community, as evidenced by: willingness to maintain the program with small
enrollments; well organized curriculum; student support services including
remediation."
Marsh said she and the other nursing faculty set a level of excellence for the
program, paying attention to detail. "We keep running statistics on all the
things we have to address," she said. UVI offers an Associate of Science degree
in nursing. The two-year program requires 72 credits for graduation and
qualifies students to take the NCLEX (national board exam) for licensing as a
registered nurse.
In the past three years, since a new curriculum was instituted, all but one nursing graduate
from that new curriculum has passed the national board
exam on the first try. Marsh credited the students' success to close
student/faculty interaction. "In a small program, the students have the
opportunity to have one-on-one instruction with the faculty," she said. For more
