UVI Offers Summer Pre-Nursing Program
For the first time, the University of the Virgin Islands Division of Nursing
Education will offer a summer pre-nursing program on the St. Croix campus. The
program, which consists of two courses, will prepare those who plan to enroll as
first-year nursing students in the fall 2001 semester.
Kathy Sheats is chair of the Division of Nursing on the St. Croix campus. "We
have a plan to try to help those who plan to study nursing here at UVI," Sheats
said. "Many of our students are coming to us unprepared for college-level work.
We lose 50 percent of nursing students before they even get to the nursing
courses because they find the work too difficult."
The pre-nursing program consists of a basic reading skills course, RCA 021
(Reading in the Content Areas) and Nursing 011 (Basic Science Concepts for
Nursing) – which, in addition to basic science concepts, provides students with
an understanding of medical terminology and instructs them in test-taking
strategies. Sheats advises that before first-year nursing students take Biology
151 (Human Anatomy and Physiology) in the fall, they enroll in the summer
course, Nursing 011, which will give them the necessary pre-anatomy science
background.
