Students and faculty from the Division of Nursing Education, St. Croix Campus, participate in a variety of community service activities on St. Croix. In February, they manned a booth at the Agricultural Fair to provide health teaching, blood pressure screening and glucose monitoring. Two of the major health issues on the island, hypertension and diabetes, are a major focus within the nursing program. During the two day period, the students counseled with, and tested, approximately 200 persons.
In May, students, faculty and one alumna volunteered their services in the medical tent for the Half Iron man Triathlon. This international event brings hundreds of professional athletes and many more amateur athletes to the island. to participate in this grueling event, which is a qualifier for the Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii later in the year. The students and faculty treat minor accident victims and those suffering with heat related problems such as dehydration. Both events are long standing community service activities for the Division.
