STARs Grant Begins for Nursing Students

The Division of Nursing Education, as a  part of the Strategies to Achieve Results (STAR) grant, held it first two week, intensive workshop for incoming nursing students from July 28 to August 8. Nine students attended the workshop that was presented by Professor Janzie Allmacher and Professor Joan Marsh. The students were presented with information about nursing and the nursing program, test taking skills, time management skills, methods for dealing with family and work situations that might impede the progress of the student, and a variety of other valuable topics.  They were introduced to the clinical area during a half day at Juan F. Luis Hospital, during which time they met with the Vice President for Nursing, Mrs. Darice Plaskett, and spent time with a registered nurse on one of a variety of units. The students also had the opportunity to speak with students who are successful graduates from the nursing program. The guest speakers offered strategies for successfully navigating the often turbulent waters of the nursing program. On the final evening of the program, families were invited to hear what was going to be expected of them in order to assure that the students were successful. The students gave their families strips of colored paper on which were printed statements that indicated the types of help they felt they would need during the next two years of the program. The families also toured the nursing facilities and had an opportunity to speak with members of the nursing faculty.  Eight of the incoming students will be selected to participate in the grant funded project for the next two years. Those students will receive a stipend to assist them with needs such as child care or transportation. All incoming students will have the opportunity to avail themselves of the intensive tutoring that will be offered during the course of the next two years.

Pre-nursing students who are interested in participating in the STARs Grant should contact Joan Marsh (692-4011) for further information about opportunities at UVI.
