Scores are in for Bucs Opening Tennis Play in Puerto Rico; |

The University of the Virgin Islands Bucs and Lady Bucs Tennis Teams squared off against Pontifica Universidad Catolica de Puerto Rico on Sept. 7 and the University of PR-Bayamon on Sept. 8. In the match against Pontifica Universidad UVI men's team, lead by Kirk Thomas, lost 3-2. In the men's singles the Bucs number one player Kirk Thomas defeated Javier Cardona 6-0, 7-5. Oswin Sewer lost his singles match 6-2, 6-0 to Manuel Rodriquez. Dimitri Maduro then lost his singles match 6-2, 6-0 to Bruono Zambrana. In the men's doubles Thomas and Sewer won, defeating Manuel Rodriquez and Javier Cardona 8-6. Teammates Maduro and Carl Christopher fell 8-5 in their doubles to Ivan Rosado and Dimas Mendez. The Lady Bucs attempts at Pontifica Universidad were unsuccessful. The women's team lost 5-0 as Jaurel Harley and Duvane Hodge lost 8-2, Nicole Orr and Victoria Cornelius of STX lost 8-0 in both doubles matches. In singles Harley lost 6-3, 6-0, Hodge lost 6-0, 6-1, and Nicole Orr lost 6-1, 6-0. UVI's teams fared better in the matches against the University of PR-Bayamon. The Lady Bucs won their match against UPR Bayamon 4-1. In doubles Harley and Hodge defeated Flomarie Diaz and Melody Mejias 8-3. In singles Harley easily won 6-0, 6-0 over Mejia and Nicole Orr defeated Mariam Ortiz 6-2, 6-1. The men lost another heartbreaker 3-2. Thomas and Sewer again teamed up to win 8-4 in doubles. Maduro and Christopher lost in doubles 8-4. Chirstopher and Sewer lost their singles matches 6-0, 6-0, and 6-0, 6-3 respectively. Thomas won his second singles match of the weekend beating Yosael Rolon 6-0, 6-1. The teams head to Puerto Rico again on Friday to face UMET and Mayaguez in weekend series.
