Foreign Language Honor Society Inducts 13 at UVI

Alpha Mu Gamma, the National Collegiate Foreign Language Honor Society, inducted 13 students on Sunday, April 1, 2007. St. Thomas campus' Mu Pi Chapter honored 11 students for their work in Spanish, and two for their work in French.

During the ceremony, held at the UVI Little Theatre, students and guests spoke and sang about various languages. Students showed their mastery of the language by reciting poems such as "Demain, dès l'aube" by Victor Hugo and "Canción de otoño en primavera" by Rubén Darío.

Prof. Violeta Donovan, assistant professor of Spanish and sponsor of the Honor Society, introduced retired educator Eddie Bruce, who gave the keynote address extolling his love of languages and the joys of learning the Chinese Mandarin language. Other speakers included Anne Jensen, board member of the Danish West Indian Society, and UVI student Tibereh Habtes, who spoke about the languages - including Tigrai and Tigrinya - in her native country, Eritrea.

The inductees closed by singing "Más allá" by Gloria Estefan, incorporating French translations of the song. For more information, contact Prof. Donovan at 693-1349.
