Although a territorial drought caused less yield for the sixth annual fruit festival, participation was up from last year. Held on July 27, 2002, at the St. George Village Botanical Garden on St. Croix, the Melee showcased tropical fruits and of course - mangoes. Contests included a mango cook-off, a mango eating competition, mango identification and a silent auction of all fruits. Clint Ferris of the Mango Melee Steering Committee said the crowd alone was an indicator that the community needs more activities of this sort.
