Relay for Life 2004 - St. Thomas, V.I.

Congratulations to all in the UVI Community who participated in the extremely successful UVI Relay for Life 2004 effort. UVI fielded two teams in the June 26-27 event, with a total of 24 members. The UVI teams raised a minimum of $2,400 in the cancer fund raising effort. Final totals will be announced when all contributions and pledges are tallied.

The UVI Relay for Life Committee also won the award for the Relay's best decorated tent. The UVI tent theme - A Night at the Fights to Knock Out Cancer - was put into live action in an adjacent boxing ring, where UVI alum Lyra Thomas Harrigan ('75) and UVI student Shanequa Williams ('06) played out the battle against cancer. Williams, in the role of cancer, was defeated by Harrigan, who portrayed those united against the disease.

UVI's Raul Carrillo, the University's special events coordinator, served as overall event chairman of the Relay for Life. He said the Relay is expected to raise between $100,000 and $115,000 for the local American Cancer Society. He noted that numerous other members of the UVI Community joined in Relay for Life teams organized by other community organizations. "This shows the impact that the University has in the community," Carrillo said. Again, congratulations to all.
