Report from UVI Relay
for Life Team Captain
Dr. Patricia Harkins-Pierre
We had 14 University of the Virgin Islands Relay for Life 2006 team members who were active in some tangible fashion. The 14 were: myself as team captain, Linda Wymer as co-captain, Mary Jo Caruso, Violeta Donovan, Kathleen Dudemaine (faculty); Rosary Harper (retired faculty), Julie Cruz (student), Alston Johnson (student and staff), Velma Abramsen, Debra Fontaine, Dale Berry, Angela McGhee, Mindy D'Orazio and Rosalia Rohan (staff and administration).
The team raised $1, 650 dollars required for the $150 team registration fee, plus 1,500 team goal set by the American Cancer Society Relay for Life local organizing committee. The St. Thomas Relay for Life took place on Saturday, June 24 and Sunday, June 25, at the Charlotte Amalie High School track. Relay for Life events are the principal fund raisers for the American Cancer Society throughout the United States and its territories. The goal is to raise money for cancer research and for helping families impacted by cancer.
I would like to thank Charles Martin for helping us locate a usable tent, and would especially like to thank Ashanti George and his assistants from the UVI Physical Plant Grounds Crew who set up the tent at the CAHS track Saturday and picked it up again Sunday with unfailing punctuality and kindness. I would also like to thank Henry Smith and Mervin Taylor, who did not join the UVI team, but who helped Linda, Julie and I take down the team tent on Sunday.
I also saw Frank Mills and Dennis Parker (newly retired professor) at the event, although they were not UVI team members, as well as many former or present UVI students. I am sure there were other UVI folks I simply did not happen to see or talk to.
