A section of the St. Croix campus of the University of the Virgin Islands will be brighter at night, thanks to a $275,575 solar energy grant the University has received.
On Tuesday, October 1, 2002, the V.I. Department of Planning and Natural Resources presented a $275,575 check to UVI President Dr. LaVerne Ragster for the installation of solar powered lights in a section of the St. Croix campus leading to the Public Safety department. UVI submitted a successful proposal for the matching grant to the V.I. Energy Office, a division of DPNR, and will provide labor for the lighting project for a 20 percent match.
Additionally on Tuesday, which marked the beginning of Energy Awareness Month, the University was presented with the first Vincent D. George "Light the Way" award for leadership in utilizing solar energy.
The parents of the late Mr. George, Reggie and Virginia George, presented the award.
