Twenty-two teachers from throughout the territory spent four weeks at the University of the Virgin Islands - from June 17 to July 18, 2002 - learning writing techniques to take back to their classrooms. The teachers were participants in the Virgin Islands Writing Project, a local chapter of the National Writing Project, which uses the approach of "teachers teaching teachers" to help kindergarten though college-level teachers better learn how to teach writing and develop their classroom skills. It is the first such program established in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Participants attended daily classroom sessions, some of which included guest lectures.
UVI Humanities Professor Dr. Trevor Parris is the director of the VIWP. Ivanna Eudora Kean English Teacher Amy Roberts is co-director. Dr. LeRoy Trotman, the V.I. Department of Education's Deputy Commissioner for Curriculum and Instruction, is facilitator for the project.
