The UVI Social Sciences Division offers courses in anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, social work, and sociology-- and bachelor of arts degrees in the following majors:

  • Psychology
  • Social Sciences
  • Social Work


Psychology... prepares graduates to meet the manpower needs, particularly of the Caribbean, in:

  • the delivery of human services
  • the development, exchange, and processing of information
    Its two-fold objective:
  • instruction in critical skills needed to qualify for entry level professional positions in human services and information services, such as research and the management and analysis of data
  • provide a multi-cultural perspective on human perception, thinking and behavior, along with the conceptual and practical skills needed to work in multi-cultural settings
Social Sciences... is an interdisciplinary major requiring the student to choose one primary and one secondary field of emphasis from the following:
  • Economics
  • History
  • Political Science
  • Psychology
  • Sociology
Any Social Sciences discipline may be chosen to meet the requirement of a third, fourth or fifth area.

Social Work... prepares graduates to meet the manpower needs for social welfare and other social services institutions, as well as other related fields. The curriculum is designed to produce social work generalists who are able to identify social welfare needs and to work with individuals, groups, families and local communities to provide direct social services.

The Social Sciences Division also offers a Legal Assistance certificate and a Political Science Administration program.

Summer Institute for Future Global Leaders in the Caribbean
A residential program held on the St. Thomas campus during the last week of May and first week of June. The multi discipline curriculum equips students with the broad knowledge and functional skills needed to assume leadership in a Caribbean environment shaped by global forces of technology, commerce and communication.
The Summer Institute focuses on three areas:

  • Global Business Environment
  • Leadership for Tomorrow
  • Culture and Communication
