In the Virgin Islands, the Tom Joyner Morning Show airs weekday mornings on

What a month!

Joyner's
'Fantastic
Voyage' Docks
in St. Thomas

Tom Joyner's "Fantastic Voyage," aboard the cruise ship Explorer of the Seas, docked in St. Thomas on Wednesday, May 29th, to a rousing reception from the University of the Virgin Islands.

The reception was well earned. Joyner - through promotions on his nationally syndicated radio show and the efforts of the Tom Joyner Foundation - raised $200,000 in scholarship funds for UVI students during the month of May.

The accomplishment was celebrated during the "Lunch With Tom" benefit at St. Thomas' Bluebeard's Castle Hotel which drew some 150 UVI staff and students as well as business supporters from the community.

The campaign received contributions from large corporate sponsors - thanks to the Tom Joyner Foundation - and from numerous individuals based on the efforts of UVI's Institutional Advancement Component.

"Our mailbox was crammed with a lot of small checks for UVI, written for $40, $5 and even $2," Joyner said. "That tells us that, no matter what their status is in life, there are people supporting your university. This is a good example of what a grassroots campaign should be."

Tom Joyner, Jr., who heads his father's foundation, said that raising $200,000 means that UVI is on track to match or beat other HBCUs that have raised $300,000 to $500,000 during the past 18 months."

Joyner Jr. said that the foundation has distributed $92,000 to date. This amount accounts for 43 UVI scholarships and a number of computer presentations.

For their part, UVI students, alumni, faculty and staff joined the fund-raising effort with a successful "caps for cash" drive sponsored by Coca-Cola Enterprises.Coca-Cola Logo UVI will receive $1,000 to fund scholarships for its students for every six-foot bottle filled with Coca-Cola product caps.

A highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of checks from a variety of local businesses, organizations and individuals. These included:

  • India Association of the Virgin Islands - $3,000
  • St. Thomas-St. John Chapter of the UVI Alumni Association - $2,630
  • Medical Air Association - $2,500
  • Richard Callwood III - $1,000
  • UVI Student Affairs Department - $1,000
  • UVI Class of 1972 - $1,000
