Re: UVI Brand Identity - Official Letterhead and Business Cards

In this, its 40th year, the University of the Virgin Islands is poised to chart the course for the territory and the region in the new millennium. Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster, the University's fourth president, is committed to seeing UVI realize its vision of being recognized globally as a leading American institution of higher education in the Caribbean.

One way to ensure that the University's image and reputation are firmly established is to reinforce an identity that is clearly recognizable. A clear and consistent identity is essential to the success of any institution. The more accurately the market perceives and understands an institution's identity, the more successful the institution will be at enhancing individual awareness, ensuring a strong and positive position in the community and fostering institutional loyalty.

Over the past few years, a multitude of UVI business card designs and letterhead styles have emerged, most of which were not approved by administration.

In an effort to establish a stronger brand identity, the President's Cabinet recently approved four business card designs, one style of UVI letterhead and a full-color version of the UVI logo. The exact shade of "UVI blue" has been defined as a color widely known in the printing industry as "reflex blue." Faculty and staff are asked to choose any one of the four business cards. Letterhead can be adapted for each University division or unit.

All offices should begin using the new letterhead and business cards by January 2004. The new full-color University logo can be used in addition to the one-color design that currently exists. To assist in making these transitions, please take a moment to visit the Public Relations page on the UVI web site at www.uvi.edu and examine the approved UVI designs for business cards, letterhead and other graphic elements.

All University offices and personnel are urged to order new letterhead and business cards when their current UVI stationery supplies become depleted. As of January 2004 only the approved UVI letterhead and business cards are to be used.

To ensure that standard fonts, colors and design elements are reproduced accurately, only two companies - ABS Printing on St. Croix and Innovations By Design on St. Thomas - are authorized to produce UVI stationery. Business cards and letterhead are not to be produced on campus by means of desktop publishing. Order forms and telephone numbers for ABS Printing and Innovations By Design are contained on the Public Relations page of the UVI web site.

All of the above-mentioned modifications are intended to market the University of the Virgin Islands with a strong brand identity of which members of the UVI family can be proud. We hope that you will agree that the use of standardized stationery for all professional contacts and networking will enhance the University's image.
