This is a SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT for the University community.

MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD

TO: The University Community

FROM: Mr. Joseph Angol, Chief of Security

SUBJECT: Notification of Sexual Offenders On Campus

DATE: October 1, 2003

The University of the Virgin Islands is mandated by law to provide notification to students and employees of known sexual offenders employed or enrolled at the University. The Campus Sex Crimes Prevention Act evolved out of Megan's Law, a federal law requiring the registration of sex offenders with state and community officials after completion of their sentence. The Campus Sex Crimes Prevention Act was designed to inform students and other members of the campus community whether there are sexual offenders in their classes or working on campus.

In compliance with this law, the University of the Virgin Islands has conducted a reference check of all current employees and students on both campuses against the listing published by the V.I. Department of Justice of known registered sexual offenders in the Virgin Islands. This reference check was negative. Based on that listing, the University confirms that there are no known sexual offenders currently enrolled or employed at the University. The V.I. Department of Justice is responsible for maintaining a registry of known sexual offenders in the territory. Interested persons may contact the V.I. Department of Justice to obtain information of registered sexual offenders in the V.I.

The University will conduct periodic reviews of this listing. The Security web site will be updated each time a review is completed. The University's Security Departments will maintain a database of any known sexual offenders employed or enrolled at the University to be available either in print form or on its web page.

The Campus Sex Crimes Prevention Act requires individuals convicted of a sexual offense to provide notification to campus security departments. The University's security departments are located in the following areas:

On the St. Croix campus, the Security Department is located on the ground floor of the Evans Center, room 134. Contact Mr. Ralph B. Cook, Sr., Security Supervisor, at 692-4160, ext. 4444 or email: rcook@uvi.edu to arrange registration.

On the St. Thomas campus, the Security Department is located on the first floor of the Penha House building. Contact Mr. Joseph Angol, Chief of Security, at 693-1530/693-1535, or email: jangol@uvi.edu to arrange registration.
