Forum to Discuss Child Protection Act Set for March 1 at UVI

The Virgin Islands community is invited to a forum on child protection from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, March 1, at the University of the Virgin Islands. The session -- titled "Child Protection Act of 2002, Moving Forward to make changes" -- will be hosted by the VI Red Ribbon Coalition in collaboration with the UVI Drug and Alcohol Prevention Committee. The session will be videoconferenced between Chase Auditorium (B-110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus and Evans Center room 713 on the St. Croix campus. Relocated Writing Center to Open March 1 on St. Thomas Campus

UVI's St. Thomas campus Writing Center will open its doors in a new home on Wednesday, March 1. The center, located in Classroom Administration Building room 119, offers free tutoring to UVI students for any kind of writing assignment. Day and evening hours will be offered during the remainder of the spring semester. Four tutors will be available. Their hours will be posted and students can sign-up for appointments on the door of CA 119 or visit a tutor immediately, if one is available. The center will also offer a variety of related services, including a typing program and English Proficiency Exam (EPE) training. Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit to Lecture at UVI on March 3

The Honorable Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, will give a lecture on the University of the Virgin Islands St. Croix campus on Friday, March 3. He will also serve as the keynote speaker at a Youth Leadership Forum on Saturday, March 4, hosted by the St. Croix Chapter of the Golden Key International Honour Society. Friday's lecture is set for 6 p.m. in the theater of the Evans Center with a videoconference link to Chase Auditorium (B-110) on the St. Thomas campus. St. Thomas Class of 2006 to Discuss Commencement Issues on March 4

A meeting of the University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus class of 2006 is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 4, in Chase Auditorium (B-110). The agenda will include graduation-related issues. Class members are asked to submit recommendations for a class speaker and for individuals to give the invocation and benediction during the St. Thomas campus commencement, which is scheduled for May 15, 2006.

Afternoon on the Green to Stir Up Food and Fun This Sunday, March 5

Afternoon on the Green -- UVI's annual St. Thomas "friend-raiser" -- is scheduled for noon to 5 p.m. this Sunday, March 5, on the Herman E. Moore Golf Course. This year's theme is "Food, Fun, an Educational Mix - On the Green for 2006." Along with the food -- available for $2 a serving -- the day will include entertainment by the Superior Court Rising Stars steel band and lots of fun and game for youngsters. Display tables from UVI's academic divisions will be available. And, representatives from UVI's recruitment office will be on hand to accept student applications. Activist Randall Robinson to Present Charter Week Heath Series Lecture

Author and activist Randall Robinson will speak at the University of the Virgin Islands on March 14 as the featured speaker in the Alfred O. Heath Distinguished Speakers Series. His talk, entitled "Race and the Making of U.S. Foreign Policy," will take place at 6 p.m. in Chase Auditorium on the St. Thomas campus and will be videoconferenced to the Melvin Evans Center on St. Croix. The lecture is part of the University's Charter Week activities, will run from March 12 through 18 on UVI's St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses. UVI Spring Recess Scheduled for March 7-10

The University of the Virgin Islands will observe Spring Recess from Tuesday, March 7 through Friday, March 10. During that time, no classes will be held. UVI administrative offices, however, will observe their normal schedules.

Jost Van Dyke Spring Break Get-A-Way Set for March 7

UVI's Student Activities Office will sponsor a day-long Jost Van Dyke (BVI) Spring Break Get-A-Way trip on Tuesday, March 7. The trip is open to all UVI students, faculty and staff and their guests. Costs are as follows: students - $40; faculty/staff - $50; guests - $60; children under 12 - $25. Included are transportation between the St. Thomas campus and the Tortola Wharf (next to the Seaplane terminal); round-trip boat transportation to Jost Van Dyke; transportation on Jost Van Dyke to White Bay Beach; use of non-motorized water toys; and lunch. Also, for persons coming from St. Croix, one night of free, on-campus, double-occupancy accommodations (based on space availability) are offered. The trip is limited to 149 persons. Friends of the VI National Park Offer Scholarship to U.S. Virgin Islanders

The Friends of Virgin Islands National Park organization is once again offering a scholarship to students from the U.S. Virgin Islands who are studying natural resource management/protection at the university level. Priority will be give to students studying at the University of the Virgin Islands. However, U.S. Virgin Islanders studying at any accredited university are eligible. To qualify, students must:

• be entering their junior or senior year at an accredited university with a major in an appropriate discipline such as marine biology, botany, ecology, forestry, etc
  
• have U.S. Virgin Islands residency and have completed high school is the Virgin Islands
  
• have completed all prerequisite course work for majors in appropriate fields
  
• maintain a minimum "B" (3.0) average through the first three semesters for sophomore applicants and through the first five semesters for junior applicants.
  

The scholarships will be in the amount of $1,000 per academic year and will continue through senior year, provided recipients maintain eligibility requirements.

MBA Exam Scheduled March 17 at UVI; Registration Deadline March 10

UVI's Business Administration Division will offer the MBA Comprehensive Examination from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 17. It will be offered in room 222 of the Sports & Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. The St. Croix campus location will be announced at a later date. CLEP Exams Scheduled at UVI's St. Croix and St. Thomas Campuses in March

College Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests will be offered on both campuses of the University of the Virgin Islands in March. CLEP tests allow students to earn college credit in a variety of subject areas, including: calculus, college algebra, biology, chemistry, humanities, Spanish, French, business law and computer applications.

• On the St. Croix campus, the tests will be given on Thursday and Friday, March 16 and 17. The deadline to register for the tests is Friday, March 10. Tests will be administered in Evans Center room 304 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information call Francisca Barry in the Academic Services Office at 692-4103.
  
• On the St. Thomas campus, the tests are scheduled for Thursday, March 23. The deadline to register is Monday, March 13. Childhood Obesity Conference Scheduled March 16 on St. Thomas

A program titled "Confronting Childhood Obesity Through Education" is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, March 16, by the Family and Consumer Sciences Program of UVI's Cooperative Extension Service. Presenters include nutritionist Letitia Henry, Ph.D., RRD, and Jerrie Hawley, head nurse at the V.I. Health Department's office of Maternal Child Health. The program, which is free, will explore topics such as the causes of childhood obesity, helping overweight children, prevention of childhood obesity, fun physical activities and parental involvement. The session will take place at the UVI-Small Business Development Center's Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. Although free, pre-registration is required. UVI students interested in helping to produce a UVI student newspaper are being sought.
