St. Thomas/St. John Ag-Food Fair
Winners Are Announced

Michael Bryan was honored as top crop farmer and Leslie Todmann the top livestock farmer during the opening ceremonies of the 2006 St. Thomas/St. John Agriculture and Food Fair on Saturday, Nov. 18, on the grounds of UVI's Reichhold Center. Awards were also presented to Lauren Liburd and Ronald Williams in the fair's student essay contest. Williams, 15, and Liburd, 16, are students at Charlotte Amalie High School. A photo of the essay winners, along with links to their winning essays are available from the UVI web site's Current Events page.

Fans Jam Paradise Jam
Men's Tourney Concludes Today

Packed stands and top level basketball have greeted local and visiting fans during the opening rounds of the 2006 edition of Paradise Jam, an NCAA Division I basketball tournament which opened Nov. 17 at UVI's Sports and Fitness Center. The men's section of the tournament concludes with a full slate of games today (Monday, Nov. 20). The championship game, between pre-tourney favorite Alabama and Xavier starts at 9:30 p.m. Today's championship and consolation games will be telecast nationally on Fox College Sports and regionally on SportsSouth. Other games today are as follows:

  • 2 p.m. -- Middle Tennessee vs. College of Charleston for 7th-8th place
  • 4:30 p.m. -- Toledo vs. Virginia Commonwealth for 4th-6th place
  • 7 p.m. -- Iowa vs Villanova for 3rd-5th place

Women's Tourney to Open Nov. 23

Paradise Jam basketball action resumes on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 23, with eight women's teams competing in two divisions. Teams from Arizona State, Western Kentucky, Rutgers and Penn State will compete in the St. Thomas Division which plays on Nov. 24 and 25. The St. John Division will feature Western Michigan, Marquette, Auburn and Xavier. St. John Division games begin at 4 p.m. on Nov. 23 and conclude on Nov. 25. Paradise Jam Admission is $5
for UVI Students, Faculty and Staff

Admission to Paradise Jam games for UVI faculty and staff is $5. This is the same price for student tickets. Regular adult admission for Virgin Islands residents is $10.

UVI Fall Semester Academic Schedule
Includes Study Days on Nov. 28 and 30

The Academic Schedule for UVI's 2006 Fall Semester includes designated study days on Nov. 28 and 30, as indicated in the Academic Calendar in the current UVI Catalog. While no classes are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 25, classes will be held on Nov. 27 and 29. The last day of Fall Semester 2006 classes will be Dec. 1. Final exams are scheduled for Dec. 2 through 8.

UVI Appoints Holly Drummond
Director of Major Gifts

Holly Drummond has been appointed the Director of Major Gifts at the University of the Virgin Islands. Drummond, whose office is located on UVI's St. Croix campus, reports to UVI's Vice President for Institutional Advancement Joseph Boschulte. In her new position, she will spearhead the University's planned giving program, allowing alumni and friends of the University to gift assets such as property, insurance and investments, and will provide assistance in the tax benefits associated with planned giving. UVI Nursing Chair to Speak
at Healthy People 2010 Summit

Dr. Gloria Callwood, chair of the Division of Nursing Education at the University of the Virgin Islands, will serve as a presenter at the federal Healthy People 2010 Summit in Newark, N.J., scheduled for Dec. 5 and 6. The summit, sponsored by Region II of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will bring together health care providers, administrators, community leaders and public health professionals in an effort to measure progress towards the elimination of health disparities that are attributed to gender, race, education and economic factors. Presentation on Interdisciplinary Research
in Biology Scheduled Nov. 27 at UVI

Dr. Robert F. Murphy, a professor of biological sciences at Center for Bioimage Informatics and Departments of Biological Sciences, Biomedical Engineering and Machine Learning, Carnegie Mellon University will make a presentation at the University of the Virgin Islands at noon on Monday, Nov. 27. Murphy's topic will be "Training for Interdisciplinary Research in Systems Biology: A Perspective and a Case Study in Automated Analysis of Cell Images." His presentation will originate in Teacher Education room 101 on the St. Thomas campus with a video link to Evans Center room 703 on St. Croix. The presentation, which is open to the UVI community and the general public, is sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Interdisciplinary Innovations HBCU-UP grant. Seminar on Hawksbill, Green Sea Turtles
in Puerto Rico Slated at UVI on Nov. 28

A free, public seminar on hawksbill and green sea turtles in Puerto Rico will be offered at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 28, at UVI's MacLean Marine Science Center on St. Thomas. The session will be available via videoconference in Evans Center room 302a on UVI's St. Croix campus. Research by biologist Robert P. van Dam, who holds a Ph.D. from the University of Amsterdam, will be presented. Van Dam has been studying sea turtles in Puerto Rico since 1985, with a focus on behavior and population dynamics of turtles near Mona Island and other locations. The seminar is part of VI-EPSCoR's (Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) 2006-07 Seminar Series. Two-Hour Administrative Leave
Granted for Nov. 21 Runoff Election

A runoff election in the Virgin Islands 2006 gubernatorial race has been scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 21. All registered UVI voters will be granted two hours of administrative leave to vote for the candidate of their choice. Employees are urged to vote early in the morning or later in the afternoon so that as little time as possible is taken from the work day. Employees should arrange a time to vote with their supervisor to insure proper coverage in each department.

UVI to Close for Thanksgiving,
Fortsberg Day Observance

The University of the Virgin Islands will be closed on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 23 and 24, in observance of Thanksgiving Day and Fortsberg Discovery Day, respectively. UVI offices and facilities will reopen on regular schedules on Monday, Nov. 27.

Financial Aid, Scholarship Students
Reminded of Dec. 18 Payment Deadline

Returning UVI students who are receiving financial aid or scholarships are reminded that Dec. 18 is the deadline for them to visit the cashier's offices on the St. Thomas or St. Croix campuses to make payment (accept charges) for tuition and fees for the spring 2007 semester. The cashier's officers are open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Failure to make payment by the deadline will result in the cancellation of classes.

UVI Plans 'Playing Mas' Troupe
in Crucian Christmas Festival Parade

The University of the Virgin Islands will sponsor a troupe in the Jan. 6, 2007 Crucian Christmas Festival parade. "Playing Mas: From Many Cultures, One Virgin Islands" has been selected as the theme. All members of the UVI community -- students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends -- are invited to participate. Pictures of the costume designs for the three sections can be view at this direct link. A sign-up form (PDF File - PDF reader.) is also available. Registration, which covers the cost of the costume, is $135 for UVI students and $165 for non-UVI students. An "early bird" special price of $100 for UVI students and $135 for non-students is available to those who sign-up by Dec. 11. Participants Sought for 4-H Troupe
in Crucian Christmas Festival

The UVI Cooperative Extension Service 4-H/Family and Consumer Sciences Program announces that registration is under way for its first annual 4-H Crucian Christmas Festival Troupe. Participation is open to children presently enrolled or past members of 4-H or CYFAR, and any child, ages 6-12, wishing to take part in the Children's Parade in a wholesome, fun and age appropriate troupe. All are welcome to come "jump up" with 4-H. Parents and adults interested in volunteering to help coordinate activities are invited to take part as well. The children's parade is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 5, 2007. Registration is on-going through Monday, Nov. 20. To register, call the 4-H/FCS offices at 692-4084 or 692-4094.

Miss UVI Competition Scheduled
for March 2007; Contestants Sought 

The next Miss University of the Virgin Islands competition has been scheduled for March of 2007. The application deadline for female UVI students wishing to compete to serve as the University's student ambassador is Dec. 15. Contestants must be unmarried, not have children and have a grade point average of at least 2.5. The competition will be held on St. Thomas. The winner will receive a full scholarship to UVI, including room, board and tuition for an academic year, and the opportunity to represent the University at on- and off-island events. Afternoon on the Green Theme
Suggestions Sought by Nov. 27

The UVI Afternoon on the Green Committee is soliciting theme suggestions for the 2007 event, which is scheduled for March 4, on the Herman E. Moore Golf Course on the St. Thomas campus. Themes should be catchy and lend themselves to creative expression (art for a t-shirts, posters, etc.). Submit themes and personal contact information by fax to 693-1045 or by email to rcarril@uvi.edu. Monday, Nov. 27, is the deadline. The individual contributing the winning theme will receive a special award. For details, contact Director of Accounting Peggy Smith, the AOG Committee chair.

UVI Music Program's Christmas Concert
Set Saturday, Dec. 2, at Reichhold Center

The University of the Virgin Islands Humanities and Social Sciences Division will present the Music Program's Annual Christmas Concert at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Reichhold Center for the Arts. The Concert Band will perform under the direction of Professor Austin A. Venzen, the Concert Choir under the direction of Laura Reyes, and the Jazz Ensemble will be directed by Professor Martin J. Lamkin. Shenelle Warner will direct the Steel Pan Ensemble. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. They may be purchased at the Reichhold Center Box Office, Dockside Bookstore in the Havensight Mall, the UVI Bookstore, and the Humanities Division office. Please come and celebrate the season with music and enjoy some old favorites as well as new exciting ones.

Dec. 8-9 Woodworkers Expo
to Feature V.I. Masters

The first annual Virgin Islands Woodworkers Expo will be held on Dec. 8 and 9 at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center on St. Thomas. Some of the finest woodworkers in the territory will display and sell their wood works. Demonstrations will be made by master woodworkers including Avelino Samuel of St. John, Afreekan Southwell of St. Thomas and Bien Brignoni of St. Croix. The expo opens at 1 p.m. on Dec. 8; and 10 a.m. on Dec. 9. There will be a special showing for junior and senior high school carpentry, woodworking and art vocational classes at 10 a.m. on Dec. 8. Admission to all sessions is free. For details call 693-1083. The Expo is sponsored by the UVI Cooperative Extension Service in partnership with the West Indian Company Limited, the VI Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

'The Caribbean Writer' Seeks
Submissions for 21st Issue

"The Caribbean Writer," a literary anthology published by the University of the Virgin Islands, is seeking submissions for its 21st issue. The Caribbean should be central to submitted works or the works should reflect a Caribbean heritage, experience or perspective. Continues Through Dec. 18

Online registration for continuing UVI students enrolling in spring semester 2007 classes is available through Dec. 18, 2006. The deadline for students to pay all tuition and fees for the spring semester is also Dec. 18. Class schedules and registration information are available on the UVI web site - http://www.uvi.edu. UVI 2006 Holiday Recess Schedule

UVI President Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster has approved an administrative end-of-the-year holiday recess as follows. Closed Friday, Dec. 22, 2006, through Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007. UVI offices will reopen on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007.

Submissions Sought for Agrifest Bulletin

The Agriculture and Food Fair of the U.S. Virgin Islands will be held Feb.17-19, 2007 on St. Croix. The theme is "Make Things Happen-Revive Agriculture in 2007." Articles for the Agrifest Fair Bulletin are being sought. Preference will be given to instructional "how to" articles. Articles featuring Virgin Islands culture are also encouraged. The submission deadline for articles to be included in the Agrifest Fair Bulletin is Nov. 30, 2006. Submit articles to Clarice Clarke at cclarke@uvi.edu.

Virgin Islands Applicants Sought
for Online Master's Program

The University of Pittsburgh is accepting applications from Virgin Islands residents for the online FastTrack Masters in Library and Information Science (MLIS) program. The deadline for application is February 14, 2007. Classes begin May 8, 2007. The application form, which must be completed online, is accessible at this link.
