The deadline for additional entries was at noon today (Monday, Oct. 15). No additional entries will be accepted. Miss UVI Makes it to Semifinals In her first-ever pageant Sharifa Maloney wowed the judges and took the crown of Miss University of the Virgin Islands. In her second pageant Maloney became a semifinalist in the Hall of Fame Black College Queens Competition. Miss UVI Sharifa Maloney was a semifinalist in the pageant held on Sept. 29 in Atlanta. Competing against 34 other queens from Historically Black Colleges and Universities across the nation, Maloney made it to the top ten. The Caribbean Writer The Research and Public Service component of the University of the Virgin Islands is proud to announce the publication of Volume 21 of The Caribbean Writer, an international journal of Caribbean literature produced annually by the University. Like its predecessors, Volume 21 offers a rich mix of art by the territory's artists as well as poetry, short fiction, personal essays, and book reviews written by an international concert of writers and literary critics. A special feature of this year's anthology is an in-depth interview with Jamaican writer Wayne Brown, one of the region's most accomplished poets and columnists. Demonstration of EBSCOHost Database A sample selection of scholarly journal articles, magazine and newspaper materials, dissertations and other educational products produced by EBSCOHost will be available to UVI faculty members from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16, in Evans Center room 902 on the St. Croix campus. St. Croix Youngsters Invited St. Croix students in grades K through six are invited to celebrate National Chemistry Week at the University of the Virgin Islands at a free, hands-on science activity session from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21. Parents and siblings are also invited to the session which will take place in the Great Hall of the North West Wing building on the St. Croix campus. Titled "The Many Faces of Chemistry," the session will feature local chemists showcasing activities in their field and discussing the wide variety of careers available to chemists. Activities scheduled for the afternoon are titled: Release the Grease, Volcano, Glitter Snot, Starch Search, The Nose Knows and more. An educational and fun afternoon for the whole family is promised. Afternoon Mix Host Liza Margolis UVI Special Events Coordinator Liza Margolis has issued a request to the University community seeking suggestions for identifying individuals who should be recognized in two new segments planned for UVI's "Afternoon Mix" radio program. The hour-long program airs weekdays at 4 p.m. on AMVI - Radio 1000. Margolis, who hosts the program, said she is adding "Student Spotlight" and "UVI Inspirations" segments to increase the focus on the human element of the University. ITS Issues Additional Credit In recognition of the many technical difficulties that UVI students have had to contend with over the last several weeks, UVI's Information & Technology Services component has given all students additional credit towards their print account balance. Students can view their account balances when logging on to a computer in a computer lab and moving the mouse over or clicking on the black dollar sign icon in the lower right of the screen. ITS has deposited a 200 page credit to each account, the same amount that is credited to all students at the beginning of each semester. For details, call Bethany Wilkes at 693-1372. UVI's Virgin Gorda Get-A-Way This year's Virgin Gorda Get-A-Way for UVI students, faculty and staff, organized by the St. Thomas campus Student Activities Office, is set for Thursday, Nov. 1, the V.I. Liberty Day holiday. The trip costs $40 for UVI students, $60 for UVI staff, $80 for non-UVI adults and $25 for children under 12. The price includes ground and boat transportation, continental breakfast, refreshments and entertainment on board the M/V Island Rocket, a historical tour of Virgin Gorda, admission to and lunch at The Baths and the $5 BVI departure tax. The 90-minute ferry trip leaves from the Tortola Warf on the Charlotte Amalie waterfront at 8 a.m. Safari bus transport from the St. Thomas campus Dining Pavilion will be provided at 7:15 a.m. Space is limited to 149 persons. Participants must carry travel documents. Sign-up is available at the UVI Bookstore on St. Thomas and the Student Activities Office on St. Croix. Progress on Disease-Resistant Grapes A seminar reviewing progress in the genetic engineering of disease-resistant grapes will be held on UVI's St. Croix campus at 3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 15. Dr. Dennis Gray, professor of Developmental Biology at the University of Florida's Mid-Florida Research and Education Center will be the speaker. Dr. Gray is collaborating with UVI's Dr. Thomas Zimmerman on field trials of transgenic Thompson Seedless grapes. These are the seedless green grapes found in grocery stores. This research involves using genes from other grapes to impart fungal resistance in this commercial variety. Studies are being conducted to evaluate disease resistance and production potential in the Virgin Islands. The first transgenic grape vineyard in the Caribbean was established at UVI in January of this year and continues to grow vigorously. Interested members of the UVI Community are encouraged to attend. Fulbright Student Grant Competition UVI students have until Oct. 16 to apply for one of more than 1,400 grants being offered to U.S. students by the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. The Fulbright Program is designed to allow students, scholars, and professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide. It is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Institute of International Education. CES Offers Classes in Home Decorating, The Family and Consumer Sciences Program of UVI's Cooperative Extension Service is offering classes in Home Decorating and Gift Items, and Beginners Clothing Construction. Classes for Home Decorating and Gift Items begin on Tuesday Oct. 16, and will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays through Dec. 6. Beginners Clothing Construction classes begin on Wednesday, Oct. 17, and will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays through Dec. 5. All classes will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Building B at the West Campus on St. Croix. The classes are free and open to the public. Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts will present one of the top names in contemporary R&B - Maze featuring Frankie Beverly - to the Virgin Islands with a performance at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20. This year, the band is on "The Fresh Tour," touching down in California, Washington D.C., The Virgin Islands and many points in between. Computer Literacy Exam Schedule The following dates have been reserved on both St. Thomas and St. Croix for the Computer Literacy Exam (CLE) this academic year.
The exam will be offered from noon to 2 p.m. on the dates listed. On St. Thomas, the exams will be held in the CAB-103 computer lab and on St. Croix the exams will be held in the NWW-131 computer lab. It is necessary to register for the CLE at least three days in advance of the exam. Students may register by phone, email or in person. St. Thomas/St. John Agriculture The St. Thomas/St. John Agriculture and Food Fair Committee has announced that the 2007 Agriculture and Food Fair will be held on Nov. 17 and 18, on the grounds of UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. The fair dates, originally set for Nov. 10 and 11, were changed to avoid a scheduling conflict. The deadline to submit applications for space in the food fair, without a penalty, is now Friday, Oct. 19. VIUCEDD Sets Oct. 22 Workshop The Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) in collaboration with the National Siblings Leadership Network will host a "Creating a Local Network of Support for Siblings of Individuals with Disabilities" workshop on Monday, Oct. 22. The workshop will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Great Hall in the NWW Building on UVI's St. Croix Campus. The keynote presenter will be John Kramer, co-founder of the National Siblings Leadership Network. Interested persons are urged to register early as space is limited. First UVI Staff Council Regular Meeting The UVI Staff Council has announced that the first meeting of the UVI Staff Council (UVISC) following the inaugural election of council officers is scheduled for 11 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Oct. 23. The session will be available by videoconference in Evans Center room 401 on St. Croix and in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on St. Thomas. Staff Council Chair Raquel Santiago-Silver announced this opening meeting, along with a schedule of regular meetings through October of 2008, via email. Southern Association SCUP Conference The Southern Association of the Society for College and University Planning will conduct a conference with the theme "Planning with Students in Mind; Show me the Money" on St. Thomas from Oct. 24 through 26, at Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort. UVI is hosting the session and President Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster will be the conference's plenary speaker. UVI Director of Institutional Research and Planning Dr. Mary Ann La Fleur, the vice-chair of the conference, says the conference is appropriate for individuals who have responsibility for university facilities, departmental chairs, and those in the administration, finance and planning areas. Scholarships, Grants for Masters Study Dr. Alan Lord, a professor from Bowling Green State University in Ohio, will visit the University of the Virgin Islands on Oct. 24 and 25 to conduct interviews with individuals interested in pursuing masters degrees in accounting at Bowling Green State University. Lord will provide scholarships and grants to selected persons who possess a bachelor's degree in accounting or who are within one year of graduating with a bachelor's degree in accounting. Interested persons must have a 3.0 GPA and must submit a resume and an official transcript to Jacinthe Proctor in UVI's Business Administration Division no later than Tuesday, Oct. 23. Dr. Lord will visit the St. Croix campus on Wednesday, Oct. 24. The time and location for an introductory and interview sessions will be announced as they become available. On Thursday, Oct. 25, Dr. Lord will conduct an introductory session from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on the St. Thomas campus in room B206. Interviews will be held in B215. UVI's Music Area Schedules The annual fall concert of UVI's Music Area of the Humanities and Social Sciences Division is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27. The concert, titled Precious Lord, will feature the University's concert band and concert choir under the direction of Professor Austin A. Venzen. It will be presented at Christchurch Methodist Church in Charlotte Amalie. Special guest artists will be Eugenia Chapman, Camila Daniels, Danielle S. Greenaway, Drew Bowers, Detra Davis, Malvern V. Gumbs and Portia and Marcus Norkaitis. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Research and Technology Park The University of the Virgin Islands Research and Technology Park Board of Directors will hold its Annual Board Meeting at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31. CVI/UVI Concert Choir Reunion Former members of the University of the Virgin Islands/College of the Virgin Islands Concert Choirs are invited to a grand Concert Choir Reunion scheduled for Feb. 27 to March 2, 2008, in the Virgin Islands. Former UVI Music Professor Dr. Gloria Quinlan, formerly Gloria McClellan, is the lead organizer of the effort.
