Open House Set for Friday, Nov. 2

UVI President Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster has issued an invitation to UVI students, faculty, staff and alumni to attend an open house at the new Administrative and Conference Center (ACC) on UVI's St. Thomas campus. The ACC is located in the building formerly known as the Harvey Student Center. The open house is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2. Refreshments and entertainment will be provided. UVI Observing Red Ribbon Week
Oct. 22-26 on St. Thomas and St. Croix

Red Ribbon Week activities at the University of the Virgin Islands begin today, with participants on the St. Thomas campus holding a pledge day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and those on the St. Croix campus conducting a candlelight march at the campus entrance at 6 p.m. A walk and speak-out activity is set for Wednesday, Oct. 24 on St. Thomas. This year's theme is "United We Stand for a Drug Free Land." A list of activities on both campuses is included in a news release on the UVI home page - http://www.uvi.edu - and from this direct link. UVI Staff Council Regular Meeting
Scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 23

The agenda for the first regular meeting of the UVI Staff Council - slated for Tuesday, Oct. 23 - is now available on the UVI Announcements page of the UVI web site - http://www.uvi.edu and from this direct UVISC Agenda link.

Several important issues, including a Draft UVI Consultancy and Business Interest Policy, will be considered. Background information on this and other agenda items has been distributed to UVI staffers via email by Staff Council Chair Raquel Santiago-Silver. The meeting is scheduled for 11 a.m. to noon. It will be available via videoconference in Evans Center room 401 on St. Croix and in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on St. Thomas. Farmers to Receive Course Completion
Awards from UVI-CES on Oct. 24

Virgin Islands farmers and the public are invited to an awards ceremony marking the completion of a University of the Virgin Islands Cooperative Extension Service (CES) training course for St. Croix farmers at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24. The ceremony will take place at the Great Hall on UVI's St. Croix campus. The six-month course covered topics in small livestock production and management, and computer use and recordkeeping. It was conducted by the CES's Agriculture and Natural Resources Program in partnership with the Virgin Islands Farmers Cooperative, the V.I. Deadline for Voting on UVI Flag
Set This Thursday, Oct. 25

Thursday, Oct. 25, is the for deadline UVI students, alumni, faculty, staff and trustees to cast ballots for the selection of the University's official flag. Fourteen design options are offered on the on-line ballot. The results of the voting will be announced at the next regular meeting of the UVI Board of Trustees, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 3, on the St. Thomas campus.

Petersen Elected to Board of Trustees
as '07-'08 Student Representative 

University of the Virgin Islands junior Dwayne Petersen was elected to serve as the 2007-2008 student representative on the University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees. In elections held on Oct. 17 on the St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses, Petersen topped LeRue Browne and Athaliah Edwards - the two other candidates running for the position. Accounting Association Participating
in Salvation Army Food Drive

The UVI Accounting Association (UVIAA) will participate in the Salvation Army's annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. Donations from the UVI community will be accepted daily from 3 to 6:30 p.m. at the UVIAA "Pate Corner" in front of the Business Education Building on the St. Thomas campus. Members and friends are asked to bring canned food items and other necessities (tissue paper, soap etc.) to the organizations next general meeting at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25. The meeting will take place in room B-206. Items collected will go to the Salvation Army to prepare food and necessity baskets for families in need. St. Thomas Campus Bookstore
Offering Post Inventory Sale

The UVI Bookstore on the St. Thomas campus is conducting a 40 to 50 percent off, post-inventory sale on selected items such as apparel, DVD movies and players, fans, desk lamps and miscellaneous supplies. The sale continues through Friday, Oct. 26.

Woods Hole Oceanographer
to Present Seminar on Oct. 23

UVI's VI-EPSCoR program will sponsor a seminar with Dr. David Fratantoni of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at the MacLean Marine Science Center (room 200) on the St. Thomas campus. Dr. Fratantoni is a physical oceanographer who is exploring possibilities for collaboration with UVI. His presentation is titled "From Wiggles to Whales: Oceanography from Autonomous Platforms." This presentation is part of the VI-EPSCoR 2007-08 Seminar Series. The series goal is to demonstrate how marine research can be of importance to the Virgin Islands and its people. St. Thomas Campus Student
Employee Orientation Set Oct. 24

An orientation session for student employees on UVI's St. Thomas campus has been scheduled at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24 in Room 110 of the Business Building. It is designed to provide student workers with the guidelines governing their employment. Although it is mandatory for new student employees, returning student employees can also benefit regarding policies, procedures and changes. Supervisors of student employees scheduled to work during the designated time are asked to excuse the student in order to attend the orientation. For details call Mary Myers at 693-1088.

Scholarships, Grants for Masters Study
at Bowling Green State to be Offered

Dr. Alan Lord, a professor from Bowling Green State University in Ohio, will visit the University of the Virgin Islands on Oct. 24 and 25 to conduct interviews with individuals interested in pursuing masters degrees in accounting at Bowling Green State University. Lord will provide scholarships and grants to selected persons who possess a bachelor's degree in accounting or who are within one year of graduating with a bachelor's degree in accounting. Interested persons must have a 3.0 GPA and must submit a resume and an official transcript to Jacinthe Proctor in UVI's Business Administration Division no later than Tuesday, Oct. 23. Dr. Lord will visit the St. Croix campus on Wednesday, Oct. 24. The time and location for an introductory and interview sessions will be announced as they become available. On Thursday, Oct. 25, Dr. Lord will conduct an introductory session from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on the St. Thomas campus in room B206. Interviews will be held in B215. Southern Association SCUP Conference
Set Oct. 24-26 on St. Thomas

The Southern Association of the Society for College and University Planning will conduct a conference with the theme "Planning with Students in Mind; Show me the Money" on St. Thomas from Oct. 24 through 26, at Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort. UVI is hosting the session and President Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster will be the conference's plenary speaker. UVI Director of Institutional Research and Planning Dr. Mary Ann La Fleur, the vice-chair of the conference, says the conference is appropriate for individuals who have responsibility for university facilities, departmental chairs, and those in the administration, finance and planning areas. UVI's Music Area Schedules
Fall Concert for Oct. 27

The annual fall concert of UVI's Music Area of the Humanities and Social Sciences Division is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27. The concert, titled Precious Lord, will feature the University's concert band and concert choir under the direction of Professor Austin A. Venzen. It will be presented at Christchurch Methodist Church in Charlotte Amalie. Special guest artists will be Eugenia Chapman, Camila Daniels, Danielle S. Greenaway, Drew Bowers, Detra Davis, Malvern V. Gumbs and Portia and Marcus Norkaitis. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Breast Cancer is Topic
for Oct. 30 Lunch and Learn

Research and Technology Park
to Elect Board Officers on Oct. 31

The University of the Virgin Islands Research and Technology Park Board of Directors will hold its Annual Board Meeting at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31. The meeting is held specifically for the purposes of electing the officers of the Board. The meeting will be held via teleconference. Interested parties may visit the offices of the Research and Technology Park on the St. Croix campus to participate.

Customs and Border Protection Sets
Recruiting Visit to St. Croix on Oct. 31

A recruiting visit by a representative of the Customs and Border Protection agency of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is scheduled on UVI's St. Croix campus for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31. UVI's Virgin Gorda Get-A-Way
Scheduled for Nov. 1 - Liberty Day

This year's Virgin Gorda Get-A-Way for UVI students, faculty and staff, organized by the St. Thomas campus Student Activities Office, is set for Thursday, Nov. 1, the V.I. Liberty Day holiday. The trip costs $40 for UVI students, $60 for UVI staff, $80 for non-UVI adults and $25 for children under 12. The price includes ground and boat transportation, continental breakfast, refreshments and entertainment on board the M/V Island Rocket, a historical tour of Virgin Gorda, admission to and lunch at The Baths and the $5 BVI departure tax. The 90-minute ferry trip leaves from the Tortola Warf on the Charlotte Amalie waterfront at 8 a.m. Safari bus transport from the St. Thomas campus Dining Pavilion will be provided at 7:15 a.m. Space is limited to 149 persons. Participants must carry travel documents. Sign-up is available at the UVI Bookstore on St. Thomas and the Student Activities Office on St. Croix. UVI Jazz Ensemble to Entertain
at 'A Taste of Two Islands' on Nov. 8

WTJX Channel 12 public TV invites the general public to enjoy some of the Virgin Island's finest cuisine at St. Thomas' annual premier food experience - A Taste of Two Islands. This year's event will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, at Marriott's Frenchman's Reef Resort. Entertainment will be provided by Stanley and the Ten Sleepless Knights and the University of the Virgin Islands Jazz Ensemble. Tickets are $50 and are available at the WTJX offices at Haypiece Hill on St. Thomas, the new Richmond building on St. Croix, and from Friends of WTJX. St. Thomas/St. John Agriculture
and Food Fair Shifted to Nov. 17-18

The St. Thomas/St. John Agriculture and Food Fair Committee has announced that the 2007 Agriculture and Food Fair will be held on Nov. 17 and 18, on the grounds of UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. The fair dates, originally set for Nov. 10 and 11, were changed to avoid a scheduling conflict. The deadline to submit applications for space in the food fair, without a penalty, is now Friday, Oct. 19. Applications can be picked up at Department of Agriculture offices on all three islands and the UVI Cooperative Extension Service office on St. Thomas. Afternoon Mix Host Liza Margolis
Seeking Individuals to Highlight

UVI Special Events Coordinator Liza Margolis has issued a request to the University community seeking suggestions for identifying individuals who should be recognized in two new segments planned for UVI's "Afternoon Mix" radio program. The hour-long program airs weekdays at 4 p.m. on AMVI - Radio 1000. Margolis, who hosts the program, said she is adding "Student Spotlight" and "UVI Inspirations" segments to increase the focus on the human element of the University. ITS Issues Additional Credit
to Student Printing Accounts

In recognition of the many technical difficulties that UVI students have had to contend with over the last several weeks, UVI's Information & Technology Services component has given all students additional credit towards their print account balance. Students can view their account balances when logging on to a computer in a computer lab and moving the mouse over or clicking on the black dollar sign icon in the lower right of the screen. ITS has deposited a 200 page credit to each account, the same amount that is credited to all students at the beginning of each semester. For details, call Bethany Wilkes at 693-1372.

CVI/UVI Concert Choir Reunion
in Planning Stages for 2008

Former members of the University of the Virgin Islands/College of the Virgin Islands Concert Choirs are invited to a grand Concert Choir Reunion scheduled for Feb. 27 to March 2, 2008, in the Virgin Islands. Former UVI Music Professor Dr. Gloria Quinlan, formerly Gloria McClellan, is the lead organizer of the effort.
