SBDC to Host Today's Afternoon Mix

UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will host the Afternoon Mix radio program from 4 to 5 p.m. today (Thursday, Oct. 25) on Radio One - AM 1000. Nadine Marchena Kean, director of the Enterprise Zone Commission, a division of the Economic Development Authority, will be the guest. The UVI community is invited to tune in to learn about the Enterprise Zone Commission and some of the exciting incentives it provides to help spur economic development in the U.S. Virgin Islands. UVI Posts Spring 2008 Class Schedules

The University of the Virgin Islands has posted class schedules and detailed registration information for its 2008 Spring Semester classes on the UVI web site. The Spring Semester on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses begins on Monday, Jan. 14, 2008 and ends on Sunday, May 4, 2008. Returning students can register on-line beginning Monday, Oct. 29. Online registration continues through Tuesday, Dec. 18. Students should consult with their advisors for course approval and to obtain PIN assignments for online registration. UVI Red Ribbon Week Activities
Continue on St. Thomas and St. Croix

Red Ribbon Week activities at the University of the Virgin Islands continue today (Thursday, Oct. 25) with free HIV testing on the St. Thomas campus. On Friday, Oct. 26, a "Wear Red Day" competition is slated on St. Thomas and a "Door Decorating" contest is planned on St. Croix. Deadline for Voting on UVI Flag
Set Today - Thursday, Oct. 25

Today (Thursday, Oct. 25) is the for deadline UVI students, alumni, faculty, staff and trustees to cast ballots for the selection of the University's official flag. Fourteen design options are offered on the on-line ballot. The results of the voting will be announced at the next regular meeting of the UVI Board of Trustees, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 3, on the St. Thomas campus.

Basketball Bucs to Play in St. Croix's
King of the Court Weekend Tournament

UVI's men's basketball team - the Buccaneers - travels to St. Croix this weekend to take part in the King of the Court Basketball Tournament, organized by former Buccaneer Rashidi Clenance of Sunstroke Productions.

The tourney will also feature the men's league champions from the British Virgin Islands, St. Thomas and St. Croix. Play will take place at St. Croix's Central High School Gymnasium, with games beginning at 7 p.m. on both Friday, Oct. 26, and Saturday, Oct. 27. Associate Athletic Director Curtis Gilpin said the tournament is an effort to promote and schowcase the UVI team to the St. Croix community. "It has been asked for and we are providing it," Gilpin said. He credited Sunstroke Productions with putting the tourney together with the champions from St. Thomas, St. Croix and the BVI.

UVI Sets Basketball, Volleyball Tryouts
for St. Croix Students on Oct. 27

UVI's Athletic Department will sponsor open workouts on Saturday, Oct. 27, on St. Croix for any students interested in trying out for UVI's basketball and volleyball teams. Associate Athletic Director and Head Coach (women's volleyball and basketball) Curtis Gilpin and Sean Georges, head coach for men's basketball, will conduct the workouts beginning at 10 a.m. on the outdoor court on UVI's St. Croix campus. UVI Jazz Ensemble Performance
Set Nov. 3 on St. Thomas Campus

The University of the Virgin Islands Jazz Ensemble will present its fall performance at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, in the Dining Pavillion on the St. Thomas campus.

Four UVI vocalists - Eugenia Chapman, Danielle Greenaway, exchange student Cherie St. Marthe and Darryl Williams - will be featured. Williams will also be the featured pianist. The ensemble will be performing Jazz favorites such as Girl Talk, In the Mood , The Closer I Get To You," and many more. Announces New Name, New Web Site

The UVI Student Learning Assessment Committee has announced that it has adopted a new name - it is now the Committee on Learning Assessment for Student Success or CLASS. Dr. Lonnie Hudspeth, who serves as the committee's chair and director of Student Learning Outcomes Assessment for UVI, also announced the availability of a new web site in support of the University's student outcomes assessment effort.

The Student Learning Outcomes Assessment web site - http://class.uvi.edu - offers an overview of the committee's makeup and goals. It also features resources to assist UVI academic units in developing assessment plans, a Frequently Asked Question section and links to off-campus assessment resources. Open House Set for Friday, Nov. 2

UVI President Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster has invited UVI students, faculty, staff and alumni to attend an open house at the new Administration and Conference Center (ACC) on UVI's St. Thomas campus. The ACC is located in the building which formerly served as the Harvey Student Center. The open house is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2. Accounting Association Participating
in Salvation Army Food Drive

The UVI Accounting Association (UVIAA) will participate in the Salvation Army's annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. Donations from the UVI community will be accepted daily from 3 to 6:30 p.m. at the UVIAA "Pate Corner" in front of the Business Education Building on the St. Thomas campus. Members and friends are asked to bring canned food items and other necessities (tissue paper, soap etc.) to the organizations next general meeting at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25. The meeting will take place in room B-206. Items collected will go to the Salvation Army to prepare food and necessity baskets for families in need. Offering Post Inventory Sale

The UVI Bookstore on the St. Thomas campus is conducting a 40 to 50 percent off, post-inventory sale on selected items such as apparel, DVD movies and players, fans, desk lamps and miscellaneous supplies. The sale continues through Friday, Oct. 26.

UVI's Music Area Schedules
Fall Concert for Oct. 27

The annual fall concert of UVI's Music Area of the Humanities and Social Sciences Division is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27. The concert, titled Precious Lord, will feature the University's concert band and concert choir under the direction of Professor Austin A. Venzen. It will be presented at Christchurch Methodist Church in Charlotte Amalie. Special guest artists will be Eugenia Chapman, Camila Daniels, Danielle S. Greenaway, Drew Bowers, Detra Davis, Malvern V. Gumbs and Portia and Marcus Norkaitis. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. to Elect Board Officers on Oct. 31

The University of the Virgin Islands Research and Technology Park Board of Directors will hold its Annual Board Meeting at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31. The meeting is held specifically for the purposes of electing the officers of the Board. The meeting will be held via teleconference. Recruiting Visit to St. Croix on Oct. 31

A recruiting visit by a representative of the Customs and Border Protection agency of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is scheduled on UVI's St. Croix campus for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31. UVI's Virgin Gorda Get-A-Way
Scheduled for Nov. 1 - Liberty Day

This year's Virgin Gorda Get-A-Way for UVI students, faculty and staff, organized by the St. Thomas campus Student Activities Office, is set for Thursday, Nov. 1, the V.I. Liberty Day holiday. The trip costs $40 for UVI students, $60 for UVI staff, $80 for non-UVI adults and $25 for children under 12. The price includes ground and boat transportation, continental breakfast, refreshments and entertainment on board the M/V Island Rocket, a historical tour of Virgin Gorda, admission to and lunch at The Baths and the $5 BVI departure tax. The 90-minute ferry trip leaves from the Tortola Warf on the Charlotte Amalie waterfront at 8 a.m. Safari bus transport from the St. Thomas campus Dining Pavilion will be provided at 7:15 a.m. Space is limited to 149 persons. Participants must carry travel documents. Sign-up is available at the UVI Bookstore on St. Thomas and the Student Activities Office on St. Croix. UVI Jazz Ensemble to Entertain
at 'A Taste of Two Islands' on Nov. 8

WTJX Channel 12 public TV invites the general public to enjoy some of the Virgin Island's finest cuisine at St. Thomas' annual premier food experience - A Taste of Two Islands. This year's event will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, at Marriott's Frenchman's Reef Resort. Entertainment will be provided by Stanley and the Ten Sleepless Knights and the University of the Virgin Islands Jazz Ensemble. St. Thomas/St. John Agriculture
and Food Fair Shifted to Nov. 17-18

The St. Thomas/St. John Agriculture and Food Fair Committee has announced that the 2007 Agriculture and Food Fair will be held on Nov. 17 and 18, on the grounds of UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. The fair dates, originally set for Nov. 10 and 11, were changed to avoid a scheduling conflict. The deadline to submit applications for space in the food fair, without a penalty, is now Friday, Oct. 19. Applications can be picked up at Department of Agriculture offices on all three islands and the UVI Cooperative Extension Service office on St. Thomas. Seeking Individuals to Highlight

UVI Special Events Coordinator Liza Margolis has issued a request to the University community seeking suggestions for identifying individuals who should be recognized in two new segments planned for UVI's "Afternoon Mix" radio program. The hour-long program airs weekdays at 4 p.m. on AMVI - Radio 1000. Margolis, who hosts the program, said she is adding "Student Spotlight" and "UVI Inspirations" segments to increase the focus on the human element of the University. CVI/UVI Concert Choir Reunion
in Planning Stages for 2008

Former members of the University of the Virgin Islands/College of the Virgin Islands Concert Choirs are invited to a grand Concert Choir Reunion scheduled for Feb. 27 to March 2, 2008, in the Virgin Islands. One-Day Excel Workshop Set
Oct. 26 on St. Thomas Campus

The University of the Virgin Islands' Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center will hold an Excel Workshop for individuals interested in becoming proficient with the features and techniques of Microsoft Excel. The one-day workshop is set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, at the UVI-CELL Center on the St. Thomas campus. The hands-on workshop will cover the basics of using Excel tools and commands, including the use of shortcuts and formulas that make working with Excel much easier.
