Manual Checks to Be Issued
to Direct Deposit Enrollees

Due to technical problems with the internet and telephone service, the UVI Accounting Office has announced that it will not be able to process Direct Deposit for the biweekly payroll, scheduled to be released on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2007. All employees enrolled in Direct Deposit will receive manual checks for this payroll period. Should the problem be resolved by next payroll period all enrollees will receive their usual Direct Deposit statement. The Accounting Office staff extended its apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

Accounting Office Schedules Meeting
to Review Banner Online Budget Checking

The UVI Accounting Office has announced that, effective Sunday, Nov. 4, the online budget checking process in banner (the University's information system) will be activated. Prior to this activation, the Accounting Office staff has scheduled a meeting to explain the process with the principal investigators for all grants, as well as other interested persons, such as component heads and department supervisors. The session is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30. It will be available, via videoconference, in T-101 on the St. Thomas campus and in EC-713 on the St. Croix campus. UVI to Close Nov. 1 for Liberty Day

The University of the Virgin Islands will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 1, in observance of the Liberty Day holiday. Classes will resume and administrative offices will reopen at their regular schedules on Friday, Nov. 2.

UVI Administration & Conference Center
Open House Set for Friday, Nov. 2

UVI students, faculty, staff and alumni are invited to attend an open house at the new Administration and Conference Center (ACC) on UVI's St. Thomas campus from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2. The ACC is located in the building which formerly served as the Harvey Student Center. Refreshments and entertainment will be provided. RSVP to vabrams2@uvi.edu.

Board of Trustees to Meet
Nov. 3 on St. Thomas Campus

The University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees will hold its quarterly meeting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. The meeting will convene with regular session agenda items. President LaVerne E. Ragster will give the President's Report, followed by the Chairman's Comments from Board Chairman Dr. Auguste E. Rimpel, Jr. Following the Chairman's Comments, the Board will consider the one item that requires action – the Fiscal Year 2009 budget appropriation request. The Research and Technology Park Board will give an update. The Board will also review a presentation of UVI's key performance indicators. Much of the meeting will include discussion of consent agenda items pertaining to many ongoing University projects. The UVI Board of Trustees last met on June 16, on St. Croix.

UVI to Host Young Women's Leadership
Conference with Just In Time Inc.

UVI's Division of Student Affairs on the St. Thomas campus will host a Young Women's Leadership Conference in conjunction with Just In Time, Inc. from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center. Approximately 50 young women from local high schools and from UVI's St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses are expected to attend. The conference theme is “Educating, Engaging and Empowering Young Women as Future Leaders.” Among the speakers will be former V.I. Senator Lorraine Berry and UVI Prof. Sharon Simmons. Peer Education Group to Present
the Play 'What A Mess!' on Nov. 4

The Peers Educating Peers student group on UVI's St. Thomas campus will present a performance of the play "What A Mess!" at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4. Guest appearances by V.I. Idol winners "BV & Drastic" with the Sports Committee dance squad are scheduled. The performance will take place at the Dining pavilion on the St. Thomas campus. Admission is $3. Lunch and Learn Session on Breast Cancer
Rescheduled for Nov. 6 on St. Thomas

The UVI community is invited to a Lunch and Learn session from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the Health Services Building on the St. Thomas campus. (This session was originally scheduled on Oct. 30.) Guest presenter Fern Laborde of the American Cancer Society will discuss breast cancer. E-Waste Disposal Program
Scheduled Nov. 8-9 on St. Thomas

UVI departments and offices on the St. Thomas campus are encouraged to participate in a free E-Waste Disposal program scheduled for Nov. 8 and 9. Details of the program were provided to UVI faculty and staff via email. Pickups are set on the following schedule: Upper Campus - 9 a.m. to noon on Nov. 8; East Campus - 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 8; West Campus (Sports & Fitness Center, CA Building, Marine Science, Reichhold Center and ACC) - 9 a.m. to noon on Nov. 9. Participants must submit a form - http://formdesk.com/UVI/ewaste - by Nov. 2 to have pick-up of their e-waste scheduled.

St. Croix Intramural Volleyball Schedule

Two final matches in the up-dated (modified due to rainouts) schedule for the St. Croix campus Fall 2007 Co-ed Intramural Volleyball leag ue will be played today, Monday, Oct. 29, with Pain Killaz vs. Conquer Dem at 9:15 p.m., and Danger Zone vs. Executioners - to follow. The league standings, with two matches remaining are as follows:

  1. Fire Burn: 8 - 4
  2. Pain Killaz: 7 - 2
  3. Conquer Dem: 6 - 3
  4. Executioners: 2 - 7
  5. Danger Zone: 1 - 8

League playoffs will begin on Tuesday, Oct. 30, with the 4th place team taking on the 5th place squad at 9:15 p.m. Action continues on Monday, Nov. 5, with the 1st place team playing the winner of the 4th vs. 5th matchup at 9:15 p.m. and the 2nd place vs. 3rd place match to follow. The Championship match is slated for 9:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7.

UVI Nursing Class to Sponsor
Curbing Obesity Walk-Fair on Nov. 11

UVI's senior nursing class of 2008 will host the 1st annual Curbing Obesity Walk-Health Fair at the Charlotte Amalie High School track from 2 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11. The activity will feature screening for cholesterol and blood glucose, along with blood pressure checks and BMI testing. A trophy will be awarded to the organization with the most participants. Student Music Recital Set Nov. 18
on UVI's St. Thomas Campus

A recital by UVI students enrolled in the Music Program on the St. Thomas campus is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18. The program will include voice and instrumental performances. The public is invited to this free event in the UVI Music Building. For details, call 693-1191.

St. Croix Basketball, Volleyball
Tryouts to be Rescheduled

Tryouts for UVI students on the St. Croix campus interested in playing varsity basketball or volleyball, scheduled for Oct. 27, were postponed due to inclement weather. Associate Athletic Director and Head Coach (women's volleyball and basketball) Curtis Gilpin and Sean Georges, head coach for men's basketball, will announce when the tryouts are rescheduled. UVI Posts Spring 2008 Class Schedules

The University of the Virgin Islands has posted class schedules and detailed registration information for its 2008 Spring Semester classes on the UVI web site. The Spring Semester on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses begins on Monday, Jan. 14, 2008 and ends on Sunday, May 4, 2008. Returning students can register on-line beginning Monday, Oct. 29. Online registration continues through Tuesday, Dec. 18. Students should consult with their advisors for course approval and to obtain PIN assignments for online registration. UVI Jazz Ensemble Performance
Set Nov. 3 on St. Thomas Campus

The University of the Virgin Islands Jazz Ensemble will present its fall performance at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, in the Dining Pavilion on the St. Thomas campus. Four UVI vocalists - Eugenia Chapman, Danielle Greenaway, exchange student Cherie St. Marthe and Darryl Williams - will be featured. Williams will also be the featured pianist. The ensemble will be performing Jazz favorites such as Girl Talk, In the Mood , The Closer I Get To You," and many more. Research and Technology Park
to Elect Board Officers on Oct. 31

The University of the Virgin Islands Research and Technology Park Board of Directors will hold its Annual Board Meeting at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31. The meeting is held specifically for the purpose of electing the officers of the Board. The meeting will be held via teleconference. Interested parties may visit the offices of the Research and Technology Park on the St. Croix campus to participate.

Customs and Border Protection Sets
Recruiting Visit to St. Croix on Oct. 31

A recruiting visit by a representative of the Customs and Border Protection agency of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is scheduled on UVI's St. Croix campus for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31. UVI's Virgin Gorda Get-A-Way
Scheduled for Nov. 1 - Liberty Day

This year's Virgin Gorda Get-A-Way for UVI students, faculty and staff, organized by the St. Thomas campus Student Activities Office, is set for Thursday, Nov. 1, the V.I. Liberty Day holiday. The trip costs $40 for UVI students, $60 for UVI staff, $80 for non-UVI adults and $25 for children under 12. The price includes ground and boat transportation, continental breakfast, refreshments and entertainment on board the M/V Island Rocket, a historical tour of Virgin Gorda, admission to and lunch at The Baths and the $5 BVI departure tax. The 90-minute ferry trip leaves from the Tortola Warf on the Charlotte Amalie waterfront at 8 a.m. Safari bus transport from the St. Thomas campus Dining Pavilion will be provided at 7:15 a.m. Space is limited to 149 persons. Participants must carry travel documents. Sign-up is available at the UVI Bookstore on St. Thomas and the Student Activities Office on St. Croix. UVI Jazz Ensemble to Entertain
at 'A Taste of Two Islands' on Nov. 8

WTJX Channel 12 public TV invites the general public to enjoy some of the Virgin Island's finest cuisine at St. Thomas' annual premier food experience - A Taste of Two Islands. This year's event will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, at Marriott's Frenchman's Reef Resort. Entertainment will be provided by Stanley and the Ten Sleepless Knights and the University of the Virgin Islands Jazz Ensemble. Tickets are $50 and are available at the WTJX offices at Haypiece Hill on St. Thomas, the new Richmond building on St. Croix, and from Friends of WTJX. and Food Fair Shifted to Nov. 17-18

The St. Thomas/St. John Agriculture and Food Fair Committee has announced that the 2007 Agriculture and Food Fair will be held on Nov. 17 and 18, on the grounds of UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. Student Assessment Committee
Announces New Name, New Web Site

The UVI Student Learning Assessment Committee has announced that it has adopted a new name - it is now the Committee on Learning Assessment for Student Success or CLASS. Dr. Lonnie Hudspeth, who serves as the committee's chair and director of Student Learning Outcomes Assessment for UVI, also announced the availability of a new web site in support of the University's student outcomes assessment effort.

The Student Learning Outcomes Assessment web site - http://class.uvi.edu - offers an overview of the committee's makeup and goals. It also features resources to assist UVI academic units in developing assessment plans, a Frequently Asked Question section and links to off-campus assessment resources. Accounting Association Participating
in Salvation Army Food Drive

The UVI Accounting Association (UVIAA) will participate in the Salvation Army's annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. Donations from the UVI community will be accepted daily from 3 to 6:30 p.m. at the UVIAA "Pate Corner" in front of the Business Education Building on the St. Thomas campus. Members and friends are asked to bring canned food items and other necessities (tissue paper, soap etc.) to the organizations next general meeting at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25. The meeting will take place in room B-206. Items collected will go to the Salvation Army to prepare food and necessity baskets for families in need. Afternoon Mix Host Liza Margolis
Seeking Individuals to Highlight

UVI Special Events Coordinator Liza Margolis has issued a request to the University community seeking suggestions for identifying individuals who should be recognized in two new segments planned for UVI's "Afternoon Mix" radio program. The hour-long program airs weekdays at 4 p.m. on AMVI - Radio 1000. Margolis, who hosts the program, said she is adding "Student Spotlight" and "UVI Inspirations" segments to increase the focus on the human element of the University. CVI/UVI Concert Choir Reunion
in Planning Stages for 2008

Former members of the University of the Virgin Islands/College of the Virgin Islands Concert Choirs are invited to a grand Concert Choir Reunion scheduled for Feb. 27 to March 2, 2008, in the Virgin Islands. Former UVI Music Professor Dr. Gloria Quinlan, formerly Gloria McClellan, is the lead organizer of the effort.
