Trustees Hold First Meeting
in Administration & Conference Center

The University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees held its quarterly meeting on Saturday, Nov. 3, in the Administration and Conference Center (ACC) on the St. Thomas campus. It is the first time the Board of Trustees meeting has been held in the new building.

In his opening statement, Board Chair Dr. Auguste E. Rimpel, Jr. noted the picturesque setting of the meeting, in the third floor conference room of the new building, overlooking Brewer's Bay. He welcomed the newly designated Faculty Trustee, tenured Social Sciences Professor Dr. Ededet Iniama, and UVI student Dwayne Petersen, who is the new Student Trustee. Winning UVI Flag Design Ratified

In other action at the UVI Board of Trustees meeting, the winning design for a new UVI flag was presented and ratified. The design - shown here - was selected from 14 presented to the UVI community for voting. A total of 257 votes were cast.The top vote getters were Image 1 (above) - with 57 votes, Image 8 - with 51 votes, Image 2 - with 40 votes, and Image 12 - with 38 votes.

Nov. 6 Lunch and Learn Session
on Breast Cancer Cancelled

A Lunch and Learn session on Breast Cancer, slated for Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the Health Services Building on the St. Thomas campus, has been cancelled. For details, contact St. Thomas campus Health Services Supervisor Ronda Hatchett at 693-1124.

Student Employee Evaluations
Submission Extended to Nov. 7

Due to last week's disruption of internet and communication access at UVI, the deadline to submit Student Employee Evaluations on the St. Thomas campus has been extended until Wednesday, Nov. 7. ECS Announces Winners
of Fall Research Symposium

The University of the Virgin Islands Emerging Caribbean Scientists Programs announce the winners of the Fall Research Symposium held Sept. 23, on the St. Thomas campus.

Eddie Parish and Afiya Fredericks received the Senior Research Awards for their outstanding work. Parrish presented "Macroalgal Substrate Affects Movement of the Long Spined Sea Urchin Diadema antillarum." Fredericks presented "The Effect of Monetary Rewards and Punishments on Stimulus-Response Learning." Environmental Awareness Workshops
Set for Schools and Small Businesses

The University of the Virgin Islands will host a series of environmental awareness training workshops on Tuesday, Nov. 13, on the St. Thomas campus, and Wednesday, Nov. 14, on the St. Croix campus. Morning and afternoon workshops will be held each day. Morning sessions will be targeted toward K-12 school personnel, while afternoon workshops are designed for individuals from selected small businesses. These workshops are being conducted as partial fulfillment of a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Supplemental Environmental Project agreement to provide community outreach training to K-12 schools and selected small businesses in the territory. Student Assessment Committee
Announces New Name, New Web Site

The UVI Student Learning Assessment Committee has adopted a new name - it is now the Committee on Learning Assessment for Student Success or CLASS. Dr. Lonnie Hudspeth, who serves as the committee's chair and director of Student Learning Outcomes Assessment for UVI, also announced the availability of a new web site in support of the University's student outcomes assessment effort.

The Student Learning Outcomes Assessment web site - http://class.uvi.edu - offers an overview of the committee's makeup and goals. It also features resources to assist UVI academic units in developing assessment plans, a frequently asked question section and links to off-campus assessment resources. VI-WRRI Issues Call for Proposals
on Water Resources Projects

The Virgin Islands Water Resources Research Institute (VI-WRRI) at the University of the Virgin Islands has issued a call for project proposals for the 2008-2009 U.S. Geological Survey Water Institute Program. Proposals that address water resources issues in the U.S. Virgin Islands are being sought. Funds for this program are made available through the Section 104 Institute Program of the U.S. Department of Interior - U.S. Geological Survey. All faculty and staff of the University of the Virgin Islands are eligible to apply for these funds through the VI-WRRI. Collaborations with non-UVI personnel are allowed.

Approximately $80,000 will be available to fund USVI projects. Projects in the $15,000 to $20,000 range are preferred. Projects will be for one year with a starting date of March 1, 2008. Proposals are due by Friday, Nov. 30, 2007. The VI-WRRI Advisory Committee will review proposals and recommendations for funding will be made to the Director of the VI-WRRI. Criteria used in the evaluation will include: technical merit, feasibility of completion, competence of the principal investigator, training and education opportunities provided, plans for the dissemination of knowledge gained and local relevance. Students Offer Music Recital on Nov. 25

UVI music students Danielle Greenaway and Eugenia Chapman will present a student music recital at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 25, at the Nisky Moravian Church. Admission is free and the public is invited.

Applications Being Accepted
for National Student Exchange Program

UVI's Counseling and Placement Center is still accepting applications for the National Student Exchange Program (NSE). The program includes more than 200 schools in the mainland United States, along with Hawaii, Guam, Alaska, Canada, Puerto Rico. It offers an opportunity to explore a different culture, enroll in courses not presently offered at UVI, explore graduate schools, and make new friends. Nominations Open for Who's Who Among
American Colleges & Universities

Nominees for inclusion in the Who's Who Among Students at American Colleges and Universities publication are being accepted by UVI's Counseling and Placement Center. This prestigious award is bestowed upon senior students who have achieved a GPA of 3.2 or higher and have demonstrated campus involvement and/or leadership skills. In addition to receiving local and national recognition, Who's Who nominees are automatically eligible for the Who's Who Among Students Scholarships. Nomination applications are available at UVI Counseling and Placement Center. Nomination applications and supporting documents must be received by Monday, Nov. 26. Second Annual Woodworkers'
Expo Set for Dec. 7-9 on St. Croix

The University of the Virgin Islands' Cooperative Extension Service and the St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix Wood Workers Society announce the second annual Virgin Islands Woodworkers Expo. This event will take place at the Great Hall on the University of the Virgin Islands' St. Croix campus on Dec. 7, 8, and 9. USVI Agriculture and Food Fair
Set for Feb. 16-18 on St. Croix

The Agriculture and Food Fair of the U.S. Virgin Islands will be held Feb.16-18, 2008 on St. Croix. The theme is - The Business of Agriculture: The Way Forward. Online Registration Under Way
for Spring 2008 Semester

The University of the Virgin Islands has posted class schedules and detailed registration information for its 2008 Spring Semester classes on the UVI web site. The Spring Semester on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses begins on Monday, Jan. 14, 2008 and ends on Sunday, May 4, 2008. Returning students can register on-line beginning Monday, Oct. 29. Online registration continues through Tuesday, Dec. 18. Students should consult with their advisors for course approval and to obtain PIN assignments for online registration. UVI Jazz Ensemble to Entertain
at 'A Taste of Two Islands' on Nov. 8

WTJX Channel 12 public TV invites the general public to enjoy some of the Virgin Island's finest cuisine at St. Thomas' annual premier food experience - A Taste of Two Islands. This year's event will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, at Marriott's Frenchman's Reef Resort. Entertainment will be provided by Stanley and the Ten Sleepless Knights and the University of the Virgin Islands Jazz Ensemble. Tickets are $50 and are available at the WTJX offices at Haypiece Hill on St. Thomas, the new Richmond building on St. Croix, and from Friends of WTJX. E-Waste Disposal Program
Scheduled Nov. 8-9 on St. Thomas

UVI departments and offices on the St. Thomas campus are encouraged to participate in a free E-Waste Disposal program scheduled for Nov. 8 and 9. Details of the program were provided to UVI faculty and staff via email. Pickups are set on the following schedule: Upper Campus - 9 a.m. to noon on Nov. 8; East Campus (Campus Housing, East Complex, Physical Plant, former Business Office) - 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 8; West Campus (Sports & Fitness Center, CA Building, Marine Science, Reichhold Center and ACC) - 9 a.m. to noon on Nov. 9. UVI Nursing Class to Sponsor
Curbing Obesity Walk-Fair on Nov. 11

UVI's senior nursing class of 2008 will host the 1st annual Curbing Obesity Walk-Health Fair at the Charlotte Amalie High School track from 2 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11. The activity will feature screening for cholesterol and blood glucose, along with blood pressure checks and BMI testing. A trophy will be awarded to the organization with the most participants. Inventory of UVI Assets
Scheduled for Week of Nov. 12

UVI's Purchasing Department has announced that the annual inventory of University assets on both campuses will be conducted by American Appraisal Associates (AAA) during the week beginning Nov. 12. Representatives from American Appraisal will visit all UVI buildings and offices inventorying and tagging University equipment. A University security officer or other designated University personnel will accompany AAA representatives.

To facilitate this project, UVI personnel are asked to do the following:

1. Identify any personal property in your office so it is not counted as University property.

2. Bring all small equipment (laptop computers, digital cameras, etc.) that are University property to your office so that it can be inventoried.

3. Identify all property that was purchased by federal funds.

St. Thomas/St. John Agriculture
and Food Fair Shifted to Nov. 17-18

The St. Thomas/St. John Agriculture and Food Fair Committee has announced that the 2007 Agriculture and Food Fair will be held on Nov. 17 and 18, on the grounds of UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. The fair dates, originally set for Nov. 10 and 11, were changed to avoid a scheduling conflict. For more information call 693-1080 or 774-5182.

Student Music Recital Set Nov. 18
on UVI's St. Thomas Campus

A recital by UVI students enrolled in the Music Program on the St. Thomas campus is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18. The program will include voice and instrumental performances. The public is invited to this free event in the UVI Music Building. For details, call 693-1191.

Faculty Technology Support Update

An update on technology support projects and deadlines for UVI faculty has been issued. The update covers the Tablet PC Program, Spring Semester software requests, End Note training, and ongoing training in Blackboard and Microsoft Outlook. Accounting Association Participating
in Salvation Army Food Drive

The UVI Accounting Association (UVIAA) will participate in the Salvation Army's annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. Donations from the UVI community will be accepted daily from 3 to 6:30 p.m. at the UVIAA "Pate Corner" in front of the Business Education Building on the St. Thomas campus. Members and friends are asked to bring canned food items and other necessities (tissue paper, soap etc.) to the organizations next general meeting at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25. The meeting will take place in room B-206. Items collected will go to the Salvation Army to prepare food and necessity baskets for families in need. CVI/UVI Concert Choir Reunion
in Planning Stages for 2008

Former members of the University of the Virgin Islands/College of the Virgin Islands Concert Choirs are invited to a grand Concert Choir Reunion scheduled for Feb. 27 to March 2, 2008, in the Virgin Islands. Former UVI Music Professor Dr. Gloria Quinlan, formerly Gloria McClellan, is the lead organizer of the effort. SBDC Sets Seminar on Loan Program
to Benefit Veterans and Families

A seminar titled "SBA Patriot Express Pilot Loan Initiative and Other SBA Programs" is scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8. It will take place at the VI Legislature Conference Room in Cruz Bay, St. John. The session is offered by will be held by the UVI Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in collaboration with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). The presenter is Carl Christensen, SBA branch manager for the USVI. While admission is free, pre-registration is required. The Patriot Express Pilot Loan Initiative is for veterans and members of the military community who want to establish or expand small businesses. SBDC Sets Two Seminars
on Debt and Personal Finance

UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will offer seminars on debt and personal finance on Nov. 7 and Nov. 14 at the center's training facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The Nov. 7 session will cover personal credit and personal money management. The Nov. 14 session is titled "How to Get Out of Debt and/or Stay Out of Debt." Both seminars will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is $20 per seminar. Receive a $5 discount for each seminar if you pre-register.
