Since 1992, the Bennie and Martha Benjamin Foundation has provided more than $1.5 million in scholarships and grants in support of improved medical care for the people of the Virgin Islands. The Foundation generously supports philanthropic projects at UVI, at hospitals on St. Croix and St. Thomas, and at the Myrah Keating Smith Clinic on St. John. A news release is available from this direct link. EDA Representatives Set The UVI Small Business Development Center will host the Afternoon Mix radio program on Thursday, Dec. 20. The day's guests will be Margarita Greenidge-Benjamin, director of compliance for the Virgin Islands Economic Development Authority (EDA) and Wayne Biggs, the authority's director of lending. They will discuss available EDA programs and how small businesses can benefit from them. The program airs from 4 to 5 p.m. on Radio One-AM1000. Call-in questions will be accepted at 774-8255. Online Registration for Spring Classes The University of the Virgin Islands is offering online registration through Tuesday, Dec. 18, for continuing students wishing to enroll in the 2008 Spring Semester. Class schedules and detailed registration information for Spring Semester classes is available on the UVI web site. Students registering online should consult with their advisors for course approval and to obtain PIN assignments that are needed for online registration. Registration of new students is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008. Late registration - which requires a $50 fee - is scheduled for Jan. 10 and 11, 2008. The Spring Semester on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses begins on Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, and ends on Sunday, May 4, 2008. UVI offices will be closed for a holiday recess from Friday, Dec. 21, 2007, through Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008. Offices will re-open on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008. In observance of the St. Croix Christmas Festival and Three Kings Day holidays, UVI offices will also be closed on Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, and Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, respectively. Sprauve Elected Alumni President The St. Thomas/St. John Chapter of the University of the Virgin Islands Alumni Association recently elected the following officers: President - Jacqueline Sprauve; Vice President - Pamela Sanes; Treasurer - Helen Hart; Secretary - Michelle Johnson; and St. John Liaison - Joan Thomas. All of the officers are new to their positions except for Thomas who was elected to a second term as the St. John Liaison. Each officer will serve a three-year term. Reichhold Ticket Office The Ticketing Services Department (box office) at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts has announced the following schedule will be observed during the University's holiday break. The box office will be closed on Monday, Dec. 24, to Wednesday, Dec. 28. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 27 through Saturday, Dec. 29. It will be closed on Monday, Dec. 31, 2007 and Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008. Regular business hours will resume on Wednesday, Jan. 2. Additionally, the Reichhold Center's administrative office will be closed from Friday, Dec. 21, 2007, through Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008. The administrative office will reopen on Thursday, Jan. 3. Reichhold patrons are advised that tickets for upcoming performances are also available from these ticket outlets: Modern Music, V.I. Other Current Items ... cont. The deadline for submissions to the 22nd issue of The Caribbean Writer has been extended to Dec. 31, 2007. As usual, the Caribbean should be central to the work or the work should reflect a Caribbean heritage, experience or perspective. Writers are encouraged to submit poems, short stories, personal essays and one-act plays. Only previously unpublished work will be considered. UVI Schedules Math Placement Exam UVI's Division of Science and Mathematics has announced that new, incoming Spring Semester 2008 students, whose Math SAT scores are below 490, are required to take a Math Placement Examination. Students taking the exam are required to bring two No. 2 pencils, a graphing calculator and a picture ID. The testing schedule is as follows:
Space Available in RPS Tent UVI offices and programs are invited to include their exhibits as part of the University's Research and Public Service tent at the Feb. 16-18 Agriculture and Food Fair on St. Croix. One table and two chairs will be provided per exhibit. Reservations of space must be made by Jan. 11, 2008. Requests made after Jan. 11 may not be accepted due to space limitations. Send email to Clarice Clarke - cclarke@uvi.edu - to make reservations. Exhibits should be interactive and should reflect the fair's theme - "The Business of Agriculture - The Way Forward." Kassav Brings Zouk to UVI's The sweet sounds of zouk music will fill the air when Reichhold Center for the Arts hosts Kassav - the top live band in the Caribbean - at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008. From the shores of Martinique and Guadeloupe to the bright lights of Paris and the vibrant streets of New York, Kassav traverses the globe as ambassadors of zouk music. Zouk is an eclectic mix of popular rhythms from the Caribbean that make you want to dance. Kassav's brand of zouk combines strong sounds of percussive instruments and horns with synthetic rhythms. St. Thomas Class of 2008 A meeting for all prospective graduates of UVI's St. Thomas campus class of 2008 is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008. The session will take place at 6 p.m. in the conference room of the Administration and Conference Center. The meeting's agenda will include the selection of a class speaker and class colors. UVI Eligible to Nominate Students The University of the Virgin Islands is eligible to nominate up to two students to compete in the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation's national graduate scholarship competition. In June 2008, the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation will award approximately 30 scholarships of up to $50,000 a year for up to six years to outstanding college seniors or recent graduates (since spring 2003) beginning their first graduate or professional degree programs in the fall of 2008.
