Spring Semester 2008 - Notes: New Student Registration Set Jan. 9; Registration of new UVI students is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008. Late registration - which requires a $50 fee - is scheduled for Jan. 10 and 11, 2008. The Spring Semester on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses begins on Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, and ends on Sunday, May 4, 2008. Spring Semester New Student The student orientation schedules for UVI's 2008 Spring Semester are available on the UVI web site - http://www.uvi.edu. New & Updated Items posted Jan. 8, 2008 Faculty, Staff, Students Invited to Jan. 10 The 2008 Conversation with President Ragster is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10. The session will be available in the following campus locations: on St. Croix in EC-401, EC-713 and EC-302A; and on St. Thomas in T-101, T-213, and B-110. UVI faculty, staff and students are invited. For details, contact the Office of the President at 693-1000. 4-H Group Excels in Troupe and Junior Congratulations to the St. Thomas 4-H group entry which took first place in the "Troupe under 100" category of the St. Croix Festival Children's Parade on Jan. 4. The troupe's theme was "Music, Culture and Tradition." The group's Nyere Francis, Jr. and Sundra Martinez were also victorious in their respective St. Croix Junior King and Queen of the Band competitions. Francis and Martinez are also the reigning Junior King of the Band and Junior Queen of the Band for St. Thomas. The 4-H troupe is sponsored by UVI's Cooperative Extension Service. Student Leadership Luncheons A series of "nuts and bolts" informational luncheons for the officers of student organizations on UVI's St. Thomas campus is planned for the week of Jan. 14-18. The luncheon schedule and room locations follows:
Refreshments will be provided. Officers are asked to RSVP to the Student Activities Office -- 693-1111 -- by noon the day before the session of interest is scheduled. Miss VI, UVI Student Janeisha John Miss Virgin Islands Janeisha John, a student on UVI's St. Croix campus and former Miss UVI Ambassadorial Pageant contestant, is being featured in a four-part TV reality special that is following 52 beauty queens as they prepare to compete in the 2008 Miss America Pageant. Titled "Miss America: Reality Check," the program premiered on Friday, Jan. 4, on The Learning Channel (TLC). The show continues the next three Friday nights at 10 p.m. ET (11 p.m. local time). Details and a promotional video are featured on the TLC web site. The program is designed to entice viewers to TLC's live two-hour broadcast of the 2008 Miss America Pageant on Saturday, Jan. 26. In a news release, Cynthia Jerry, executive director of the Miss Virgin Islands Scholarship Organization said she was proud of Janeisha. Other Current Items ... Space Available in RPS Tent UVI offices and programs are invited to include their exhibits as part of the University's Research and Public Service tent at the Feb. 16-18 Agriculture and Food Fair on St. Croix. One table and two chairs will be provided per exhibit. Reservations of space must be made by Jan. 11, 2008. Requests made after Jan. 11 may not be accepted due to space limitations. Kassav Brings Zouk to UVI's The sweet sounds of zouk music will fill the air when Reichhold Center for the Arts hosts Kassav - the top live band in the Caribbean - at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008. From the shores of Martinique and Guadeloupe to the bright lights of Paris and the vibrant streets of New York, Kassav traverses the globe as ambassadors of zouk music. Zouk is an eclectic mix of popular rhythms from the Caribbean that make you want to dance. Kassav's brand of zouk combines strong sounds of percussive instruments and horns with synthetic rhythms. St. Thomas Class of 2008 A meeting for all prospective graduates of UVI's St. Thomas campus class of 2008 is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008. The session will take place at 6 p.m. in the conference room of the Administration and Conference Center. The meeting's agenda will include the selection of a class speaker and class colors.
