New & Updated Items posted Jan. 10, 2008 Late Registration Continues Jan. 10-11; Late registration for UVI's Spring Semester continues from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and tomorrow, Jan. 10 and 11. A late registration fee of $75 will be charged. The Spring Semester on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses begins on Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, and ends on Sunday, May 4, 2008. Blackboard Training Offered A one-day series of Blackboard training workshops will be offered on UVI's St. Thomas campus on Friday, Jan. 11, and on the St. Croix campus on Thursday, Jan. 24. St. Croix Campus Affairs Forum A St. Croix Campus Affairs Forum is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 23, in the NWW Great Hall. Among the agenda items are searches to fill student affairs and student activities positions, new capital projects, a new health and wellness initiative, a prospective First Bank ATM on campus, an overview of spring orientation and institutional security enhancements. The forum is open to all students, faculty and staff. Light refreshments will be served. Other Current Items ... Kassav Brings Zouk to UVI's The sweet sounds of zouk music will fill the air when Reichhold Center for the Arts hosts Kassav - the top live band in the Caribbean - at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008. From the shores of Martinique and Guadeloupe to the bright lights of Paris and the vibrant streets of New York, Kassav traverses the globe as ambassadors of zouk music. Zouk is an eclectic mix of popular rhythms from the Caribbean that make you want to dance. Kassav's brand of zouk combines strong sounds of percussive instruments and horns with synthetic rhythms. Other Current Items ... Student Leadership Luncheons A series of "nuts and bolts" informational luncheons for the officers of student organizations on UVI's St. Thomas campus is planned for the week of Jan. 14-18. The luncheon schedule and room locations follows:
Refreshments will be provided. Officers are asked to RSVP to the Student Activities Office -- 693-1111 -- by noon the day before the session of interest is scheduled. Miss VI, UVI Student Janeisha John Miss Virgin Islands Janeisha John, a student on UVI's St. Croix campus and former Miss UVI Ambassadorial Pageant contestant, is being featured in a four-part reality TV special that is following 52 beauty queens as they prepare to compete in the 2008 Miss America Pageant. Titled "Miss America: Reality Check," the program premiered on Friday, Jan. 4, on The Learning Channel (TLC). The show continues the next three Friday nights at 10 p.m. ET (11 p.m. local time). Details and a promotional video are featured on the TLC web site. The program is designed to entice viewers to TLC's live two-hour broadcast of the 2008 Miss America Pageant on Saturday, Jan. 26. In a news release, Cynthia Jerry, executive director of the Miss Virgin Islands Scholarship Organization said she was proud of Janeisha. "Her poise and grace are noted wherever she goes as our state representative," she said. For details, contact Cynthia Jerry at 777-8883. Space Available in RPS Tent UVI offices and programs are invited to include their exhibits as part of the University's Research and Public Service tent at the Feb. 16-18 Agriculture and Food Fair on St. Croix. One table and two chairs will be provided per exhibit. Reservations of space must be made by Jan. 11, 2008. Requests made after Jan. 11 may not be accepted due to space limitations. For details, contact Clarke at 692-4060. St. Thomas Class of 2008 A meeting for all prospective graduates of UVI's St. Thomas campus class of 2008 is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008. The session will take place at 6 p.m. in the conference room of the Administration and Conference Center. The meeting's agenda will include the selection of a class speaker and class colors.
