Spring Semester Exams Under Way

UVI's spring semester exams are scheduled from today (April 28) through May 4. The semester ends for students on May 4. Commencement exercises are slated for May 12 on the St. Thomas campus and for May 13 on the St. Croix campus.

Finals Week Computer Lab,
Library Schedules Announced

The following computer labs will observe unlimited operating hours during exam week to provide additional access to learning resources and computers/printing. If the labs are found to be closed during this period, please contact UVI security to gain access.

  • St. Croix: NW 120 & NW 131
  • St. Thomas: B-204 East

UVI's Libraries will observe the following regular schedule during the exam period:

  • Monday - Thursday: 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Friday - 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Saturday - 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Sunday - 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Osborne-Elliott Named Associate Campus
Administrator for Student Affairs on St. Croix

UVI Executive Administrator for the St. Croix Campus Dr. Monique A. Guillory has announced the appointment of Miriam Osborne-Elliott as Associate Campus Administrator for Student Affairs effective today - Monday, April 28.

Osborne-Elliott joined UVI in 1992 and has served in a variety of positions in Student Affairs. For the past three years she has worked as Assistant Director of the Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD). UVI Research and Technology Park
to Hold Board Meeting on May 1

The University of the Virgin Islands Research and Technology Park board of directors will hold a meeting at 9 a.m. (AST) on Thursday, May 1. The meeting will be held via teleconference. Interested parties may visit the offices of the Research and Technology Park on UVI's St. Croix campus to participate. For further information call 692-4200.

Tour Set of Havensight Trees
Affected by Roadway Expansion

A tour of trees affected by the Havensight roadway expansion project is scheduled for 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 4. Participating will be Carlos Robles from UVI's Cooperative Extension Service and an official from the Department of Public Works Federal Highway Program. The tour is open to to the general public, particularly anyone with interest in the expansion project and its impact on the trees. The tour will start from the main entrance of the Havensight shopping area.

UVI To Host Tom Joyner May 22nd

The University of the Virgin Islands will host radio personality and philanthropist Tom Joyner as he and passengers from his annual Fantastic Voyage cruise disembark in St. Thomas on Thursday, May 22. The cruise raises money for Historically Black Colleges & Universities.

The "party with a purpose" starts at 11 a.m. and continues until 3 p.m. on the lawn of the Reichhold Center for the Arts and Brewer's Bay Beach with Cool Sessions Brass providing the music. Food and drinks will be on sale. The local community is being invited to extend their lunch time to come out and party with UVI, Tom Joyner and the crew.

UVI volunteers/ambassadors will be needed to assist with many aspects of the event. Prof. Aurelia Donald (at 693-1316) is coordinating volunteers. For more information about the event, call Patrice Johnson in the UVI Public Relations Office at 693-1058.

Deadlines Set for Student Employeement
Evaluations, Summer-Fall Requests

UVI's Student Employment Office on the St. Thomas campus has announced several deadline in relation to student workers.

Student Worker Performance Evaluation forms for the spring 2008 semester should be completed and submitted to the office by May 2. Forms have been distributed by email to supervisors. They are also available from the Counseling and Placement wesite or this direct link.

Request for Student Worker forms for the upcoming summer sessions and the fall semester are now being accepted. May 2 is the deadline for summer session requests and June 6 is the deadline for fall semester requests. Thurgood Marshall Leadership
Institute Seeking UVI Students

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund is seeking UVI students interested in developing their leadership skills by attending the organization's ninth annual Leadership Institute and Recruitment Conference scheduled in New York City for Oct. 24-27. The institute is designed to introduce students to representatives from some of the nation's top companies, governmental agencies and non-profit organizations. More than 900 students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities attended last year's institute. This will be the fourth consecutive year that UVI students have attended the institute. Recruiter Christopher Binn will visit the St. Thomas campus on May 8 and the Croix campus on May 9. Prospective participants must Juniors and have a 3.0 GPA or higher. The deadline to apply is May 7. May 1 Deadline Set for Nominations
to UVI Staff Council Election

Thursday, May 1, is the deadline to submit nominations for individuals to participate in the 2008 election of UVI Staff Council officers to serve one- or two-years terms, as determined by UVISC by-laws. Nomination forms were distributed along with paychecks on April 17 and 24. Special boxes in which to place completed forms will be available in the Library, Physical Plant and Business Office on St. Croix and in the Administration and Conference Center on St. Thomas.

Nomination forms are also available from the new UVI Staff Council web site - http://www.keularts.com/SC/. The new web site also includes links to the schedule of upcoming meetings, meeting agendas and minutes, and the organization's by-laws. The site also serves as a location to host information on proposals affecting UVI staff members and responses from the UVISC to those proposals. The site can also be accessed from several places on the UVI home page - www.uvi.edu - including the "Other UVI Sites" menu and the "Site Index" and "Faculty/Staff" button.

AES Sponsoring Two Seminars
in Horticulture on St. Croix

UVI's Agricultural Experiment Station will sponsor two seminars on St. Croix as part of the interview process to fill the position of research assistant professor of horticulture. Faculty, staff, students and members of the Virgin Islands farming community are invited to attend.

The first seminar - titled: Suggested Research Topics for Horticulture in the Virgin Islands - will be presented by Dr. Lawrence Lewis, former V.I. Commissioner of Agriculture. It is scheduled for 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, April 28, in room 133 of UVI's Research and Extension Center. The second seminar - titled: Nutrient Management in Horticultural Crops - will feature Dr. Brandon Smith, Assistant Professor in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Tennessee. Volunteers Sought for V.I. Study
Focusing on Health Status of Women

Volunteers are needed in the Virgin Islands to participate in a research study looking at the health status of African American and Afro Caribbean women and at their access to health care services. The study, which seeks to involve 200 women in the territory, is being conducted by the Caribbean Exploratory Research Center in the Division of Nursing at the University of the Virgin Islands. 'No Shows' on Seaborne Airline
to Incur Cost of Corporate Ticket

The University community is advised that Seaborne Airlines is now enforcing its "no show" policy. That policy is as follows:

Reservations using Seaborne Corporate ticket (University bulk tickets) can be cancelled without penalties up to one (1) hour prior to flight time. If passengers fail to show for a booked flight, the applicable account (at UVI) will be charged for one Seaborne Corporate fare. Corporate travelers will be charged the full corporate rate for each "no show" plus have the return flight cancelled.

The Business Services Office on St. Croix and the Purchasing Office on St. Thomas will pass the cost of a cancellation on to the appropriate department.

Persons traveling on University business who have a change of plans are strongly encouraged to contact Seaborne Airlines to avoid these additional fees. Graduation Ball for 2008 Graduates
Slated for May 11; Tickets Available

The annual Graduation Ball for prospective 2008 graduates (Associates, Bachelors and Masters) on UVI's St. Thomas campus will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 11, at Marriott's Frenchman's Reef Resort. Tickets are $60 and are available at VI Bridal & Tuxedo - Tutu Park Mall, Modern Music - Havensight, Max Mart - Nisky Center and at the UVI Bookstore. Graduation Wishes Available
in Graduation Ball Booklet

Individuals who want to send a special "Graduation Wish" to a student worker, advisee, co-worker, friend or organization member who is graduating this year on UVI's St. Thomas campus can do so in a special Graduation Ball Booklet being compiled by the Student Activities Office. Depending on size, "wishes" cost from $5 to $35. The deadline to submit a "wish" is Wednesday, April 30. The Graduation Ball is scheduled for May 11. Summer Session Dates, Fall Semester
Information Available on UVI Web Site

Dates and detailed registration information on UVI's two 2008 summer sessions, as well as for the upcoming fall semester are available on the UVI web site. UVI's Summer Session I is scheduled for May 19 through June 23. Summer Session II will run from June 25 through Aug. 1.

UVI's fall semester classes begin on Aug. 18 and end on Dec. 3. Direct links to this information is available from the Academics link and the BUCSS - Banner Utilization Central for Self Service - button on the UVI home page: www.uvi.edu.

Online registration for both summer sessions and the fall semester began on March 17. Students must confer with advisors on course selection and obtain personal information numbers before they can register online.

2008 Youth Moviemaking Workshop

UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts is accepting applications for its 2008 Youth Moviemaking Workshop. The workshop starts Monday, June 23. The deadline to apply is Friday, May 30. Small Business Week 2008
Activities Set for May 19-23

UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will coordinate this year's annual Small Business Week activities from May 19 through 23. The week is designed to promote entrepreneurship and small business training opportunities. The week will be highlighted by Small Business Week awards ceremonies set for May 22 on St. Croix and for May 23 for the St. Thomas/St. John awards. SBDC to Offer Free Seminar
on Community Express Loans

UVI's Small Business Development Center will conduct a free seminar on Small Business Administration (SBA) program offerings including the Community Express Loan Program from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30, on St. Thomas. The session, which will take place at the SBDC's Nisky Center Training Facility, will be presented by Carl Christensen, branch manager of the SBA in the Virgin Islands. Taxi and Tour Certification
Set for May on St. Thomas

A six-week Taxi and Tour Certification program designed to equip tourism professionals with skills to actively engage guests in the language, history and culture of the Virgin Islands will be offered beginning May 1 on St. Thomas. Program meetings are from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursdays, through June 5.

Topics such as customer service, V.I. history and culture, points of interest and presentation skills will be covered. The training costs $250 and includes materials. To receive certification, students must pass a 100-question exam and demonstrate their presentation skills. The program was developed by the UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center and is endorsed by the USVI Hotel and Tourism Association and the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association. Management Skills Workshop
Set May 2 on St. Thomas, St. Croix

The fourth in a 10-part series of management skills workshops will be offered by UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center from 8:30 a.m to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 2, on St. Thomas and St. Croix. The series is designed to help managers develop and refine the skills needed to manage the workforce more effectively.

The workshop is titled "Performance Appraisals: Strategies for Success." It will focus on extablishing standards of performance and effectively managing the process. The St. Croix venu is the Joseph A. Simpson Building, #23A Hospital Street in Frederiksted. On St. Thomas, the workshop will be held at the CELL Center on UVI campus.

The workshops are being held in collaboration with the American Management Association (AMA). Participants who complete six of the workshops can obtain a Certificate in Management Skills in the Workplace from the University of the Virgin Islands and the AMA.
