New & Updated Items - May 5, 2008 Distinguished Students Honored The University of the Virgin Islands honored its most distinguished students at Academic Awards Ceremonies on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses in April. Award recipients received scholarships, divisional awards and other academic awards. Approximately 130 students received awards. The lists of students who received honors are available from these links: Bucs Volleyball Team Wins STT/STJ UVI's Buccaneers volleyball squad won the St. Thomas/St. John Winter Power League championship on May 1, defeating two-time defending champions Top Spin in a 2-0 sweep of the best of three playoffs. After losing the first set, 22-25, the Bucs rebounded in the following sets, winning convincingly, 25-17, 25-19 and 25-15. Bucs' regular season coach Jason Liburd - who was in the ironic position of playing for Top Spin - lauded the team's win and the presence of many UVI students and staff who came out to show their support. "Your presence made a huge difference," Liburd said. "We look forward to your continued support in our upcoming LAI season." St. Thomas Spirit Committee Sets UVI's entire St. Thomas campus community is invited to an afternoon of fun, food and frolic on the Administration and Conference Center (ACC) veranda from 4:30 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 9. There will be free food (B.B.Q items), board games, music and a cash bar. The community is encouraged to come out and mix and mingle as we kick off the summer season. Put on your game face and join in friendly competition and other entertaining activities. This is the first of several events coordinated by the Campus Spirit Committee to foster a greater sense of community among faculty, staff and students. Following the Campus Happy Hours, the UVI community is encouraged to show their support for UVI's Governmental and Industrial League basketball team by attending a game scheduled for 9 p.m. at Charlotte Amalie High School. Town Hall Meetings Set to Discuss Wayson Report - NOTE: Room Change on STX Session I UVI President Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster has scheduled two town hall meetings on Tuesday, May 6, to discuss the Wayson Report - a study of reorganization at UVI - with faculty and staff. Part I of the report is available from the UVI Announcements page. Both sessions will be videoconferenced.

Shared Governance - NOTE: Date change for STT meeting. Two additional town hall meetings to discuss Shared Governance have been scheduled for May 9 and May 14 on St. Croix and St. Thomas, respectively. Information about UVI's ongoing initiative on shared governance is available from the Shared Governance section of the UVI Announcements web page - http://announce.uvi.edu. The St. Croix meeting is set for 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 9, in the Great Hall - North West Wing room 134. The St. Thomas campus meeting will take place from 11 a.m. to noon on May 14 in the ACC first floor conference room. Spring Commencement UVI's spring semester has ended for students. Commencement exercises are slated for May 12 on the St. Thomas campus and for May 13 on the St. Croix campus. Volunteer Ushers Needed The UVI Commencement Committee is seeking ushers to serve for the 44th Commencement on the St. Thomas campus. The Commencement ceremony is scheduled for 7 p.m. on May 12. Luncheon to Honor Cynthia Richards The St. Thomas/St. John Library Association's VI/Women's History Month luncheon to honor Cynthia Richards as Librarian of the Year is scheduled for Sunday, May 18. UVI Sets Summer Session, Fall Semester The University of the Virgin Islands will offer English placement tests for incoming summer session and fall semester students on Wednesday, May 7, on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. Students must have applied to UVI to be eligible to take these tests. Students should bring a picture ID, two pencils and two pens. The tests offered are: English 100 - an essay test - is scheduled from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on both campuses. English 101 - a reading and vocabulary test - is set for 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. on both campuses. On St. Thomas, the tests will be given in the Sports and Fitness Center (second floor). UVI Sets May 8 for Mathematics The University of the Virgin Islands will administer its mathematics diagnostic and placement test on Thursday, May 8, on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. Accreditation Progress Letter The text of a progress letter from UVI President Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education is now available for review by the University community. The document has been posted on the "UVI Accreditation" section in the Archives column on the UVI Announcements (intranet) web site: http://announce.uvi.edu. Note: Access to this web site is only available via the UVI computer network. Nominations for '08 Performance Incentive UVI is accepting nominations for the 2008 Performance Incentive Awards program. The nomination process continues through August 20, 2008. The program's goal is to promote consistent and exceptional performance by recognizing the achievements of those who have exceeded personal, unit, and organizational goals, and who have contributed significantly to the progress of UVI and the Virgin Islands community. Purchasing Announces UVI's Purchasing Department has announced changes in the price of tickets on Seaborne Aviation and Cape Air airlines. The round-trip cost for Cape Air is now $130. The round-trip cost on Seaborne is now $160. Other Current Items (Cont.) ... Professional Development Training UVI faculty and staff are encouraged to take advantage of the three online professional development sessions scheduled for Friday, May 9, through the Teaching, Learning and Technology (TLT) Group. Information about TLT Group can be found at http://TLTgroup.org. Participants can work in groups on either campus or from home or office. Programs planned for May 9 include: Seven Principles of Effective Teaching & Learning with Technology (9:30 - 10:30 a.m.); Using Flashlight for online surveys (11 a.m. - noon); and Using UVI's TLT membership for professional development (2 - 3:30 p.m.). China's Golden Dragon Acrobats Prepare for a spectacle of dazzling brilliance and breathtaking skill as China's Golden Dragon Acrobats take to the stage as part of UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts' Family Series. The Golden Dragon Acrobats have performances set for 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, at the Reichhold Center. UVI To Host Tom Joyner May 22nd The University of the Virgin Islands will host radio personality and philanthropist Tom Joyner as he and passengers from his annual Fantastic Voyage cruise disembark in St. Thomas on Thursday, May 22. The cruise raises money for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The "party with a purpose" starts at 11 a.m. and continues until 3 p.m. on the lawn of the Reichhold Center for the Arts and Brewer's Bay Beach with Cool Sessions Brass providing the music. Food and drinks will be on sale. The community is being invited to extend their lunch time to come out and party with UVI, Tom Joyner and the crew. UVI volunteers/ambassadors will be needed to assist with many aspects of the event. Prof. Aurelia Donald (at 693-1316) is coordinating volunteers. June 6 is Deadline to Submit Student UVI's Student Employment Office on the St. Thomas campus has announced that the deadline to submit Request for Student Worker forms for the fall semester is June 6. The forms, which were distributed to supervisors via email, are also available from the Counseling and Placement web site or this direct link. Thurgood Marshall Leadership The Thurgood Marshall College Fund is seeking UVI students interested in developing their leadership skills by attending the organization's ninth annual Leadership Institute and Recruitment Conference scheduled in New York City for Oct. 24-27. The institute is designed to introduce students to representatives from some of the nation's top companies, governmental agencies and non-profit organizations. More than 900 students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities attended last year's institute. This will be the fourth consecutive year that UVI students have attended the institute. Recruiter Christopher Binn will visit the St. Thomas campus on May 8 and the Croix campus on May 9. Interviews will be held between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day. Prospective participants must be juniors and have a 3.0 GPA or higher. The deadline to apply is May 7. Sign-up sheets are available in UVI's Counseling and Placement Offices. Study Volunteers are needed in the Virgin Islands to participate in a research study looking at the health status of African American and Afro Caribbean women and at their access to health care services. The study, which seeks to involve 200 women in the territory, is being conducted by the Caribbean Exploratory Research Center in the Division of Nursing at the University of the Virgin Islands. 'No Shows' on Seaborne Airline The University community is advised that Seaborne Airlines is now enforcing its "no show" policy. That policy is as follows: Reservations using Seaborne Corporate ticket (University bulk tickets) can be cancelled without penalties up to one (1) hour prior to flight time. If passengers fail to show for a booked flight, the applicable account (at UVI) will be charged for one Seaborne Corporate fare. Corporate travelers will be charged the full corporate rate for each "no show" plus have the return flight cancelled. The Business Services Office on St. Croix and the Purchasing Office on St. Thomas will pass the cost of a cancellation on to the appropriate department. Persons traveling on University business who have a change of plans are strongly encouraged to contact Seaborne Airlines to avoid these additional fees. Graduation Ball for 2008 Graduates The annual Graduation Ball for prospective 2008 graduates (Associates, Bachelors and Masters) on UVI's St. Thomas campus will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 11, at Marriott's Frenchman's Reef Resort. Tickets are $60 and are available at VI Bridal & Tuxedo - Tutu Park Mall, Modern Music - Havensight, Max Mart - Nisky Center and at the UVI Bookstore. UVI's Summer Session I is scheduled for May 19 through June 23. Summer Session II will run from June 25 through Aug. 1. UVI's fall semester classes begin on Aug. 18 and end on Dec. 3.
