New & Updated Items - May 29, 2008 Reminder: Performance Incentive Award All UVI employees are reminded that nominations for the University's 2008 Performance Incentive Awards program are now being accepted. The goal of the program is to promote consistent and exceptional performance by recognizing the achievements of those who have exceeded personal, unit, and organizational goals, and who have contributed significantly to the progress of UVI and the Virgin Islands community. Employees are encouraged to nominate individuals they feel have met these criteria. Details of the 2008 program and links to online nomination forms are available from the "University Employee Compensation Program" area in the Archives section on the UVI Announcements web page - http://announce.uvi.edu. The nomination process continues through August 20, 2008. 4-H Summer Academies Scheduled; The 2008, 4-H Summer Academies will be held from June 23 through August 1 on St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John. UVI's Cooperative Extension Service, which organizes the academies, encourages the entire UVI community to participate by enrolling their children (ages 5-14) in this six-week summer camp program. Registration for UVI personnel is set for today (Thursday, May 29) and Friday, May 30. Registration for the general public begins on Monday, June 2. To register, visit the Research and Extension Center in room 139 on the St. Croix campus or the Cooperative Extension Service Office (now located in the former Human Resources Building) on the St. Thomas campus. Registration is open each day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The registration fee for UVI employees is $90 per child (immediate family members only). The general pubic registration fee is $175 for the first child and $150 for each additional child. Fees are payable by money order, no personal checks will be accepted. Money orders should be made out to: UVI Cooperative Extension Service. Please note, the Summer Academies are offered on a first-come, first served basis. UVI Relay for Life Teams Select UVI's 2008 St. Thomas Relay for Life teams selected the theme "Pirates of the Cure-ibbean" at an organizing meeting today (Thursday, May 29). UVI employees, students and supporters are expected to enter up to four teams in the event which raises funds for the American Cancer Society. The Relay for Life is scheduled for June 21 and 22 at Charlotte Amalie High School. Each team member pledges to contribute or raise $100 toward the team goal of $1,500. Team organizers are still seeking volunteers to help with the tent setup and support for team members who walk the CAHS track in shifts throughout the night. Donations of water, fruit drinks, food, fruits and nuts, etc. are also sought. Anyone who wants to join the team or sign up as a volunteer should contact Inez Bartlette at 693-1482 (ibartle@uvi.edu) or Curtis Gilpin at 693-1104 (cgilpin@uvi.edu). 2008 Hurricane Season Approaches; May 26 to 30 has been declared National Hurricane Preparedness Week. The 2008 hurricane season officially starts on June 1 and ends on November 30. Current forecasts predict an above normal hurricane season for the Atlantic Basin. The most recent National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) outlook projects 12 to 16 named storms, including six to nine hurricanes and two to five major hurricanes reaching category three or above on the Saffir Simpson Scale. UVI employees are encouraged to take the forecasts seriously and begin early preparations both in the workplace and in their homes for this hurricane season. The Hurricane Preparedness Coordinators on both campuses are reviewing preparedness plans for their respective campuses and will begin meeting on a regular basis with their preparedness teams. The University will keep employees and students apprised of any developing storm systems that may affect our area throughout the season. UVI Community Encouraged to Support The UVI community is encouraged to support UVI's Buccaneers basketball team that is participating in the Housing, Parks and Recreation Co-Ed League on St. Thomas. The Bucs have a 2-1 record. Games are played at 9 p.m. in the Charlotte Amalie High School gym. The league schedule is as follows:
Oliver Samuels to Bring New Play Comedian Oliver Samuels will bring what the Jamaican press calls one of the best plays of the last five years to the Virgin Islands in July. Samuels plays a shrewd spiritual leader and prophet in the Jamaican village of "River Bottom." "River Bottom" has its Virgin Islands premiere at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 11, at Island Center for the Performing Arts on St. Croix. The comedy gang moves to St. Thomas for two 8 p.m. shows slated for Saturday, July 12, and Sunday, July 13, at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. New Documentary Focuses Virgin Islands A videoconferenced screening of "Danish Artist Hugo Larsen's Cultural Portrait of Our Islands 1904-07," a new one-hour educational video documentary sponsored by the St. Croix Friends of Denmark Society, is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, at UVI. The documentary offers a fascinating insight into the Virgin Islands society of 100 years ago. The screening will take place in the Great Hall on the St. Croix campus and in the first floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. The video was created in part by a grant from Virgin Islands Humanities Council, with major support from V.I. Department of Education. The presentation is supported by UVI's Division of Humanities and Social Sciences. The public is invited. Admission is free. Volunteer Snorkelers Sought Volunteers who are good snorkelers are sought for a second effort to tag and release sea turtles in Brewer's Bay. The tagging will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 31. Twelve turtles were caught and released in an initial effort held on May 3. Volunteers should gather at UVI's MacLean Marine Science Center on the St. Thomas campus. Volunteers are advised to use full-foot fins. They should also bring a lunch or money for a possible pizza run. Young People Sought for Reichhold's UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts is accepting applications for its 2008 Youth Moviemaking Workshop. The workshop starts Monday, June 23. UVI to Screen Indian Film Exploring An award-winning film from India about a child with dyslexia will be presented to the Virgin Islands community at the University of the Virgin Islands on Wednesday, June 4, on the St. Croix campus and on Thursday, June 5, on the St. Thomas campus. Produced and directed by Aamir Khan,"Taare Zameen Par" or "Every Child Is Special" offers a look into the life of an eight-year-old Ishaan who can't seem to get anything right in class. Ultimately, with time, patience and care, an unorthodox art teacher helps Ishaan to find himself. Both evenings will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a tasting of Indian foods. The film begins promptly at 6 p.m. It will be shown in the Great Hall on UVI's St. Croix campus and in the first-floor conference room in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. Proposals for Special Projects Funding Interested faculty and staff are invited to submit proposals for the funding of projects under the College Cost Reduction and Access Act (CCRAA), which provides temporarily increased support to the Title III, Part B program. A Request for Faculty and Staff proposals form, which provides the guidance needed to submit a pre-proposal that can be considered internally for submittal to the U.S. Department of Education, has been distributed along with associated documents to all faculty and staff via email on May 6. UVI St. Thomas/St. John Alumni The University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas/St. John Alumni Chapter will hold its 6th Alumni Recognition Awards Breakfast at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 7, at the Dining Pavilion on UVI's St. Thomas campus. The chapter will honor Dr. Trevor Connor with the Distinguished Alumni Award, Debra Gottlieb with the Alumni Honor Award, Eltino S. Pickering with the Alumni Horizon Award and V.I. Senator Carmen M. June 6 is Deadline to Submit Student UVI's Student Employment Office on the St. Thomas campus has announced that the deadline to submit Request for Student Worker forms for the fall semester is June 6. UVI's Eastern Caribbean Center The Eastern Caribbean Center of the University of the Virgin Islands will conduct the 2008 Virgin Islands Community Survey (VICS) during the months of May, June and July. This scientific survey of a sample of households is a follow-up to the one conducted in 2007 that collected information similar to that gathered in the census of 2000. UVI's Summer Session I Under Way, UVI's Summer Session I classes began on May 19. There is still time to register for Summer Session II classes which will run from June 25 through Aug. 1. Online registration for Summer Session II and the Fall Semester - which begins on Aug. 18 - is under way. Students must confer with advisors on course selection and obtain personal information numbers before they can register online. UVI's Information and Technology Services component has announced summer session hours for the ITS Services Desk which is a combination of the Information Technology HelpDesk and the Library Circulation Desks. Among the services offered by the ITS Service Desk are book checkout, password resetting, library card activation, equipment loans, sign up for voice/data activation in the residence halls and software loans. CELL Notes ... One-Day PowerPoint Workshop UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center announces a date change for a previously scheduled workshop. The one-day PowerPoint workshop has been rescheduled for Thursday, June 12. The workshop will be held 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the UVI St. Croix Campus. Participants will gain the skills needed to create an effective presentation, choose design elements that enhance your presentation, add special effects, deliver a web-based presentation and much more. CELL Offers Personal Computer UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center will offer three, five-week Personal Computer (PC) Boot Camp courses this summer on the University's St. Thomas campus. Basic, intermediate and advanced sessions will be offered. Each course costs $200. A late fee of $25 will be charged for those who sign up after the posted registration deadlines. The course will provide an overview of concepts, terminology and the operating capabilities of computers. Topics include hardware, software, tools, communications, ethics and security. The registration deadline for the basic course is Friday, June 6. An Intermediate PC Boot Camp course will be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from July 23 through Aug. 11. The course will teach basic skills needed to operate a computer and use commercial software packages. Participants will explore Windows, word processing functions, spreadsheet basics, using the Internet, email and much more. The registration deadline for the intermediate course is Friday, July 11. The Advanced Boot Camp course is scheduled for Mondays and Wednesdays from Aug. 28 through Sept. 8. This course will allow students to explore advanced topics such as troubleshooting PCs, the internal structure of a PC, using system tools to maintain peak performance and much more.
