New & Updated Items - June 26, 2008 St. Croix Campus Acting CEAs Announced University of the Virgin Islands President Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster announced that effective June 24 until June 30 Miriam Osborne-Elliott will serve as Acting Campus Executive Administrator (CEA) for the St. Croix campus while CEA Dr. Monique Guillory and Associate Campus Administrator Nereida Washington are on annual leave. Effective Tuesday, July 1, Nereida Washington will serve as Acting CEA for the St. Croix Campus. Dr. Ragster encourages the UVI community to continue to give all individuals your full support and cooperation as they fulfill the critical functions relative to student affairs and operations on the St. Croix Campus. Business Bldg. Computer Lab Closed, Due to St. Thomas campus summer upgrades and renovations taking place in the academic buildings on the upper campus Information and Technolgoy Services (ITS) has announced that during Summer Session II the computer labs in the Business Buildings are closed and there will be no video conferenced classes on the upper campus. ITS has shifted staff to provide increased support in Classroom Administration Building (CAB) computer labs. Please take note of the following changes during Summer Session II: St. Thomas Campus CA Building Computer Lab Hours of Operation:
A technician will work from the ITS office in the CA Building computer lab to provide support for evening video conferenced classes, since all video conferenced classes will be held on the lower campus. A technician will be available until 10 p.m. Library Hours of Operation:
A reference librarian will be available in the Ralph Paiewonsky Library on St. Thomas Monday to Thursday until 8 p.m. The librarian will then move to the CA Building Computer lab to provide students with research assistance from 8 to 10 p.m. Questions, concerns and inquires should be directed to the Help Desk at helpdesk@uvi.edu or at 340.693.1466. Outlook Mobile Access Not Functioning UVI's Information and Technology Services (ITS) informs the UVI community that Outlook Mobile Access (OMA) is currently not operational. This feature allows users to receive e-mail on mobile devices (Blackberry or Pocket PC phones). Service providers are working diligently to resolve the problem. ITS will provide the UVI community with updates as soon as more information becomes available or when the problem is resolved. ITS apologizes for any inconveniences this may cause. Location Changed for UVI and League of Women Voters Energy Forum The League of Women Voters of the Virgin Islands will host an Alternative Energy Forum from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 28 in the St. Thomas campus Administration and Conference Center and teleconferenced to the St. Croix campus Evans Center Theater (EVC-401). The forum will explore alternative and/or renewable energy options that are available in the territory. It is co-sponsored by UVI and VI-EPSCoR. Topics to be discussed include ways that Virgin Islands residents and businesses can lower their energy needs and reduce their energy costs, as well as what can be done at the government and university levels to evaluate alternative sources of energy most suitable for the Virgin Islands. This event is open to the general public. All interested persons are encouraged to attend. Panelists Sen. Louis Patrick Hill, Bevan Smith, Jr., Hugo Hodge, Jr., Craig Barshinger and Onajee Jackson will participate. Other sponsors include the Virgin Islands Conservation Society, St. Croix Environmental Association, the Environmental Association of St. Thomas-St. John and AARP. More information is available from these links on the UVI web site: Financial Aid | Cost of Attendance. UVI Graduate Wins Recent UVI graduate Shamika Thomas is the new Miss Virgin Islands. Thomas claimed the crown at a Saturday night contest where one of her competitors was UVI student Al'Lima de Lugo. De Lugo won the second runner up title. As Miss Virgin Islands Thomas will receive at least $12,000 in scholarships and awards. The 23-year-old Thomas will represent the Virgin Islands in the Miss America Pageant. The outgoing Miss Virgin Islands Janeisha John is a UVI student. UVI has Strong Showing for Relay for Life More than 50 UVI employees, their families and friends participated in UVI's effort for the 2008 Relay for Life. Held on June 21 and 22 on the Charlotte Amalie High School track, the American Cancer Society fund-raiser has become a major community event. UVI's theme was "Pirates of the Cure-ibbean" and members of the UVI teams wore pirate-inspired gear such as bandanas, eye patches, and bracelets. Inez Bartlette and Curtis Gilpin were co-captains for the UVI effort. Bartlette said she was pleased with the support from the UVI community and thanked everyone for their hard work and participation. She called UVI's participation in the event "a huge success" and has asked the UVI community to start gathering their ideas for the 2009 Relay for Life. One of these upgrades includes the renovation of the upper campus restrooms, which will begin on Wednesday, June 25th. This particular project is expected to be completed in approximately six (6) weeks. Signs will be posted informing the public as to which restrooms will be operational during this time. Other campus projects and upgrades include door and hardware replacements in the upper academic buildings, the smartcard access for student laundry services, the science building renovation, residence hall furniture upgrades and a request for qualifications for the Brewer's Bay restroom and shower. A complete list of projects and upgrades is available from this direct link. Dr. Esdaille to Serve as Interim Dean of the Business Division UVI Provost Dr. A. I. Musah has announced that Associate Professor of Accounting Dr. Eustace Esdaille will serve as the Interim Dean of the Business Division through August 12, 2008. Dr. Esdaille's interim appointment comes at Dr. P.G. Simmonds works on Global and Graduate initiatives that will cause him to work outside of the territory. Dr. Musah has asked that the UVI community continue to give Dr. Esdaille their full support and cooperation. |
Other Current Items (Cont.) Dr. Henry Smith Named Interim On May 31, 2008, Joseph Boschulte ended his tenure with the University of the Virgin Islands as vice president for Institutional Advancement. In his stead, President LaVerne E. Ragster has named Dr. Henry H. Smith, vice provost for Research and Public Service, to serve as interim vice president for Institutional Advancement, effective June 1, 2008. In his capacity as interim vice president for Institutional Advancement, Dr. Smith will also serve as executive director of both the Foundation for the University of the Virgin Islands and the Foundation for the Reichhold Center for the Arts. During the period in which he serves as interim vice president for Institutional Advancement, Dr. Smith will retain his current position as vice provost for Research and Public Service and director for the Water Resources Research Institute. Please give him your support as he undertakes this challenging responsibility. UVI to Co-Host National The University of the Virgin Islands is co-hosting a technical assistance workshop for a U.S. Department of Education grant program. More than 150 managers of the Department of Education's Title III Part B Strengthening Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) program are on St. Thomas for the National Association of HBCU Title III Administrators Technical Assistance Workshop. Family Movie Night to Feature The 2008 International Year of the Reef (IYOR) Committee on St. Croix invites the UVI community to a free family movie night from 7 p.m .to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, June 27, in the Great Hall in the North West Wing building on the University's St. Croix campus. The popular underwater cartoon "Finding Nemo" will be shown. There will be free popcorn. Drinks will be on sale. The IYOR committee will provide a brief update on upcoming community events. Oliver Samuels to Bring New Play Comedian Oliver Samuels will bring what the Jamaican press calls one of the best plays of the last five years to the Virgin Islands in July. Samuels plays a shrewd spiritual leader and prophet in the Jamaican village of "River Bottom." "River Bottom" has its Virgin Islands premiere at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 11, at Island Center for the Performing Arts on St. Croix. The comedy gang moves to St. Thomas for two 8 p.m. shows slated for Saturday, July 12, and Sunday, July 13, at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. Reminder: Performance Incentive Award All UVI employees are reminded that nominations for the University's 2008 Performance Incentive Awards program are now being accepted. The goal of the program is to promote consistent and exceptional performance by recognizing the achievements of those who have exceeded personal, unit, and organizational goals, and who have contributed significantly to the progress of UVI and the Virgin Islands community. Employees are encouraged to nominate individuals they feel have met these criteria. UVI's Eastern Caribbean Center The Eastern Caribbean Center of the University of the Virgin Islands is conducting the 2008 Virgin Islands Community Survey (VICS) during the months of May, June and July. This scientific survey of a sample of households is a follow-up to the one conducted in 2007 that collected information similar to that gathered in the census of 2000. CELL Offers Personal Computer UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center is offering two, five-week Personal Computer (PC) Boot Camp courses this summer on the University's St. Thomas campus. Intermediate and advanced sessions will be offered. Each course costs $200. A late fee of $25 will be charged for those who sign up after the posted registration deadlines. To register, or for additional information, call UVI-CELL at 693-1100 or visit http://cell.uvi.edu. An Intermediate PC Boot Camp course will be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from July 23 through Aug. 11. The course will teach basic skills needed to operate a computer and use commercial software packages. Participants will explore Windows, word processing functions, spreadsheet basics, using the Internet, email and much more. The registration deadline for the intermediate course is Friday, July 11. The Advanced Boot Camp course is scheduled for Mondays and Wednesdays from Aug. 28 through Sept. 8. This course will allow students to explore advanced topics such as troubleshooting PCs, the internal structure of a PC, using system tools to maintain peak performance and much more.
