New & Updated Items - July 7, 2008 12th Annual Mango Melee Congratulations to all members of the UVI community who helped contribute to another successful Mango Melee on St. Croix. Thousands turned out to the St. George Botanical Village Garden on Sunday for the annual celebration of all things mango. UVI's Cooperative Extension Service and the UVI Agricultural Experiment Station are among the event's major sponsors, along with the V.I. Department of Agriculture and the St. George Village Botanical Garden. Extension Information Specialist Clarice Clarke estimated the crowd to be larger than the 3,000 who turned out for last year's melee. "The parking was backed up to UVI," she said. Others from UVI playing major roles in the event were CES Assistant Director Kofi Boateng who MC'ed the mango eating contest, Program Supervisor Dr. Jozef Keularts who made a presentation on controlling mango pests, and 4-H Agent Sara Smith who was in charge of youth activities. Others who contributed to the effort were the Experiment Station's Thomas Zimmerman, Extension Agent Sue Lakos and Extension Assistant Jo-Ann Josiah.
