December 17, 2002 Scotiabank Awards $20,000 in Scholarships to UVI On Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, the Bank of Nova Scotia presented two University of the Virgin Islands students on the St. Thomas campus with $2,500 scholarship checks. Monday's check presentation represents Scotiabank's longstanding $20,000 annual commitment to funding scholarships at UVI. Each year, Scotiabank awards $10,000 in scholarships to students on each of UVI's two campuses. As new Scotiabank scholarship recipients for the 2002-2003 academic year, Terisha Fahie, a freshman education major, and Tashema Clarke, a sophomore nursing major, are eligible to renew the $2,500 award each year for the duration of their UVI academic careers. Eligibility is based on maintaining a consistently high academic standing.
"The University is grateful to Scotiabank for its generous contribution, which each year gives UVI students the ability to confidently prepare themselves for the future," said UVI President Dr. LaVerne Ragster. "Scotiabank scholarships help make learning possible." The new Scotiabank scholarship recipients for the 2002-2003 academic year on UVI's St. Croix campus are freshman computer science major Selah Macedon and senior business administration major Tracey Friday. Ms. Macedon and Ms. Friday will receive their $2,500 scholarship checks next week. St. Thomas students Kishone Bussue and Sharyn Niles have been awarded $2,500 each in Scotiabank scholarhips for 2002-2003. It is Ms. Bussue's third year as a Scotiabank scholarship recipient and Ms. Niles' fourth year as a Scotiabank scholarship recipient. Ms. Bussue, a junior, is an accounting major. Ms. Niles, a senior at UVI, is attending Boston University as a participant in the Boston University Medical School Early Admission Program. On St. Croix, sophomore mathematics major Meria Marcel and junior psychology major Latashia Joseph have each been awarded $2,500 scholarships. Robert Haines, Scotiabank's vice president and country manager for the U.S. Virgin Islands, says the bank's commitment to providing UVI scholarships is unwavering. "This is what we consider being good corporate citizens," he said. "Scotiabank wants to help students who otherwise might not be able to complete their education." UVI students can apply for Scotiabank scholarships, which are renewable each year, based upon academic performance. Scotiabank awards up to a maximum of $2,500 per grade level.
