February 4, 2003 UVI St. Croix Campus to House Governor Charles W. Turnbull and the Executive Committee of the University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees have agreed to initially develop the UVI Research and Technology Park on 10 acres of land within the boundaries of the UVI St. Croix campus in Estate Golden Grove, as well as on government-owned Parcel 12 in Estate Golden Grove. The 24th Legislature conveyed government-owned Parcels 12 and 1A in Estate Golden Grove to the University for the development of the UVI Research and Technology Park. Based on a series of meetings held with St. Croix Farmers in Action and other community leaders, development of the Park on Parcel 1A would require eight farmers to relocate. This agreement will facilitate the short-term development of the UVI Research and Technology Park, while awaiting the satisfactory resolution of issues associated with the conveyance of Parcel 1A, which is now in use by farmers. "This action truly demonstrates the University's commitment to the best interests of the territory and the people of St. Croix ," Governor Turnbull said. "Rather than delay this project , which has the capacity to invigorate St. Croix's sluggish economy, I am in favor of the UVI Board of Trustees' action to set aside land on the University's St. Croix campus, as well as the use of Parcel 12, which is not in dispute. I applaud the University's commitment to the economic recovery of the island of St. Croix." Until issues related to Parcel 1A are resolved, Park development will be confined to land on UVI's St. Croix campus and Parcel 12 of Estate Golden Grove, which represents the portion of undisputed government lands turned over by the 24th Legislature. "This is the most viable alternative for the timely development of the Park without risking a loss of momentum," said UVI President Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster. "The University and the government of the Virgin Islands are taking this first step together, with the understanding that we will continue to collaborate with the government and interested members of the St. Croix community to find a satisfactory solution for the long-term development of the Park."
