44th Charter Week Anniversary Events Schedule

In recognition of the University of the Virgin Islands' 44th annual Charter Day, UVI will host a number of activities from March 13 through March 18, 2006. The official Charter Day Ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. on March 16 in Chase Auditorium, room B110, and will be videoconferenced to the Theater of the Evans Center, room EC401, on the St. Croix campus.

Charter Day is an annual celebration that commemorates the signing of legislation establishing the College and later the University of the Virgin of Islands 44 years ago.

Weeklong Charter Day activities, scheduled on both campuses, include a walk/run, several lectures, including the Alfred O. Health Distinguished Speaker's Forum and the Bennie and Martha Benjamin Distinguished Nurse Lecture Series. Both campus libraries will also feature a weeklong Charter Day Library Display. Most of the activities will be videoconferenced between the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses.

All of the activities are free and open to the public.

  • Monday, March 13 at 11a.m. -- Suzette Lettsome, R.N., M.S.N. will discuss her research entitled "Registered Nurses' Perception of Illness/Injury in the Hospital Setting in the USVI." Her discussion will take place in N101 of the Nursing Building on the St. Thomas campus. For information please contact Dr. Edith Ramsay-Johnson at 693-1287.

  • Monday, March 13 at 1 p.m. -- Mary Thomas Perkins, R.N., DNSc. will be the featured speaker for the Bennie and Martha Benjamin Distinguished Nurse Lecture Series. She will lecture on the topic, "Nursing in the 21st Century" in Chase Auditorium, Room B110 on the St. Thomas campus, with videoconference to the Evans Center Theater on St. Croix. Following her presentation there will be an announcement of a generous monetary gift from HOVENSA to the BSN class of 2006. For more information please contact Dr. Barbara Stright at 693-1293.

  • Tuesday, March 14 at 6 p.m. -- Author and activist Randall Robinson will be the featured speaker for the Alfred O. Heath Distinguished Speaker Series. Robinson's talk, entitled, "Race and the Making of U.S. Foreign Policy," will take place in Chase Auditorium/Room B110 on the St. Thomas campus and will be videoconferenced to the Evans Center Theater on the St. Croix campus.   • Tuesday, March 14 -- Mary Thomas Perkins, R. N. DNSc. will meet and converse with nursing faculty and students on the St. Croix campus from 12:00-1:30p.m. For more information please contact Dr. Maxine Nunez at 693-1289.

  • Wednesday, March 15 -- The 1st Annual UVI Charter Day Archery Competition will take place on the St. Croix campus. Open to all UVI students, faculty, staff, and alumni, the contest will begin at 9:30 a.m. and run until12 noon. For more information, please contact Bruce Wray at 692-4139.

  • Wednesday, March 15 -- Noted physicist and author Dr. Lawrence M. Krauss will speak from 1 - 2 p.m. in Chase Auditorium on the St. Thomas campus with a videoconference to Evans Center Room 713 on St. Croix. Dr. Krauss is chair of the physics department at Case Western Reserve University and the author of The Physics of Star Trek as well as Hiding in the Mirror: The Mysterious Allure of Extra Dimensions.   • Thursday, March 16 at 9 a.m. -- The 44th annual Charter Day Ceremony will begin via videoconference in Chase Auditorium on the St. Thomas campus and the Evans Center Theater on St. Croix. Refreshments will follow. The UVI Steel Band Ensemble will perform from 11-11:30 a.m. in from of the Ralph Paiewonsky Library on the St. Thomas campus.   • Thursday, March 16 from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. -- Local high school students will participate in the Shadow Our Students Program (SOS) on the St. Thomas campus. SOS is a student-focused initiative of the UVI Student Government which aims to create mentoring relationships between University students and seniors in the local high schools. Motivational speaker and Central State University senior Tobias Brown will speak at 1 p.m. in the Sports and Fitness Center.   • Friday, March 17 at 6 a.m. -- The 5th Annual Queen Mary Highway 5K Walk/Run will begin at Kmart in the Sunshine Mall and will end on the St. Croix campus. Limited registration will be conducted from 5:30 a.m. on race day. The event culminates in a medal-awarding ceremony and breakfast on the St. Croix campus.   • Friday, March 17 -- A kickball rematch between faculty/staff and student teams is scheduled for UVI's St. Croix campus at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 17. The student team will be attempting to avenge a loss to the faculty/staff squad earlier this semester. The game will be held on the field adjacent to the residence hall.   • Friday, March 17 -- Beginning at 8:30 p.m., Student Activities United for a Common Event (S.A.U.C.E.) will present "Coming to the Stage," an Apollo-style variety talent show, chicken fry and after party at the St. Thomas campus Dining Pavilion. Music will be provided by DJ Kegg and Red Lions. Tickets are $5 for UVI Students, $8 in advance for all others and $10 at the door.   • Saturday, March 18 at 1 p.m. -- The Annual Spring Research Symposium will take place in the Cafetorium on UVI's St. Croix campus. Students and UVI research scientists from the VI-EPSCoR program will display poster presentations of their research projects.
