Young Filmmakers to Hone Skills at Reichhold

UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts' Youth Moviemaking Workshop (YMW) - a fun, creative and educational seven-week program - starts on Monday, June 23, and runs through Saturday, August 9. The Department of Human Services sponsors the Youth Moviemaking Workshop.

The application deadline is extended to Monday, June 16. Applications are available at Reichhold Center's website at www.reichholdcenter.com, via e-mail at ffenton@uvi.edu or by calling 693-1550.

Now in its seventh year, the summer program for young people ages 13 to 17 is designed to motivate, educate and build practical skills in the field of digital film production.

Students use the latest media technology while learning the ins and outs of filmmaking. They also learn teamwork and discipline. YMW participants produce their own videos and television programs. They test their own creativity and discover the excitement of the creative process.

Assignments instruct as well as reinforce the following objectives: knowing how to operate a digital camera, learning the language of film, developing a script, team building skills, acting, training in production equipment and using computers to edit.

The production segment is devoted to the final project which is a 15- to 20-minute short film. On Saturday, August 9, students will exhibit their works at a "Red Carpet Premiere" at the Reichhold Center. All are welcome to attend.

YMW classes run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Mondays though Thursdays. Free lunch will be provided by the Department of Education's School Lunch Program regardless of race, color, sex, disability or national origin. Any child not enrolled in Reichhold Center's YMW, but who would like to eat lunch at Reichhold Center, is welcome to do so.

In accordance with Federal Law and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Policy, the Reichhold Center for the Arts is prohibited from discriminating on a basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or ability.

YMW alumni have gone on to several colleges, as well as to work in the television industry.
