COURSE DESCRIPTION


ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Students must have a high school diploma or equivalent and must achieve matriculating status at the University of the Virgin Islands to enroll in the Certificate program. This means that students must either meet the basic skills requirements for entry as a matriculating student or must concurrently enroll in the appropriate basics skills courses and must pass the basic skills courses before certification is awarded.

CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

The Certificate Program is designed to meet the educational and initial professional development needs of entry level personnel in inclusive early childhood education. It requires successful completion of 18 credits of required courses and practical. The required courses and practical are:

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

EDU 108
Title: Understanding Patterns of Child Development (Pre-natal through Two Years)
Description:
This course will introduce the student to the variability in patterns of child development from conception through the child’s second year of life and will discuss the major influences on prenatal and infant and toddler development. It will discuss the concepts of developmental domains and holistic development and the major theories of child development. It provides a core foundation of knowledge essential to students’ current and future occupational positions.

Title: Understanding, Developing, and Enhancing Appropriate Environments for Infants and Toddlers
Description:
This course introduces students to the concept of the developmentally appropriate environment, the importance of the child’s family and/or caregivers and the use of natural environments as a focus for inclusionary early intervention practice.

EDU 110
Title: Supervised Practicum in Infant and Toddler Development
Description:
Observe and participate under the supervision of qualified professionals in a variety of inclusive natural environments in which infants and toddlers and their families are served for three hours per week for nine weeks.

EDU 113
Title: Understanding Patterns of Child Development - Three to Six Years
Description:
This course will introduce the student to the variability in patterns of child development from the young child’s third birthday to sixth year of life. It will discuss the major influences on preschool childhood development and will examine the sources of variation in child development across the developmental domains.

EDU 114
Title: Understanding, Developing, and Enhancing Appropriate Environments for Preschool Children
Description:
This course introduces students to the range of environments that preschool age children might experience and the opportunities and strategies, as well as the key role of the family.

EDU 115
Title: Practicum in Preschool Child Development
Description:
The practicum will provide opportunities for observing developmental patterns in preschool children with diverse abilities in inclusive preschool settings and provides opportunities for planning and implementing developmentally and individually appropriate activities. Students will observe and participate under the supervision of qualified professionals in a variety of inclusive natural environments in which infants and toddlers and their families are served.
